ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontWatch
#23880
My mum is terrible about this. When I still lived with my parents and would watch something on TV she'd wander in, watch for about thirty seconds, then declare "This is stupid". No matter how many times I pointed out that she was basing this conclusion on less than a minute of viewing whatever happens to be on the screen at the time with no context, she still did it.
#23881
I've got an online friend who refuses to play any ''{{Metroid}}'' game simply because SamusIsAGirl. Never mind that the fact that Samus is actually female was a plot twist in the first game and characterisation is minimal in most of the games (actually more-or-less all of them except ''Prime 3: Corruption'' and maybe ''Fusion''), apparently he just refuses to play a game that has a female PlayerCharacter since "
[he's] a man and wants to play with men". I know that there are other series with female protagonists, but I'm a Metroid fanboy so that one bugs me in particular.
#23882
A man that wants to play with men? This guy might be in the TransparentCloset.
#23883
This is why when somebody questions me about why I like to
play a game full of girls, I tell them it would be more weird if I liked to play and watch a game full of men.
#23884
My older brother used to be a Metroid fanboy,(Samus was actually his overall favorite character) and fully repects the of the game. However, he simply WILL NOT play a game that stars a female protagonist. I'm the Metroid fanboy now.
#23885
Inform him that you posted about this and then inform him people are calling him a sexist fuck. Proceed to laugh at his shitty denial.
#23886
Odd inversion over here: before reading ''Literature/{{Twilight}}'', I was actually trying to come up with arguments to defend it. Then I read it, and am now a rather vocal part of the {{Hatedom}}.
#23887
This troper intentionally subverted this trope: I read the books so, when I told someone I didn't like it, they could never accuse me of
Complaining About Books I Don't Read
#23888
This troper has observed that Twilight's {{hatedom}} is just as vocal and rabid as the {{fandom}}, so to avoid the tendency to shred the book based on what she has heard, she has decided to just read it herself and shred it on its own merits.
#23889
As proof this is a concept of ignorance, this troper thought ''NeonGenesisEvangelion'' sucked without even seeing it. When I admitted that part, fellow anime fans said that was invalid since I hadn't watched it. And they were right. I actually found the show pretty good.
#23890
You're not the only one. HypeAversion played a major part of me not watching the main series until earlier this year. That and Hideaki Anno uprgraded from ShrugOfGod to what was basically "Leave me alone and figure it out for yourself, damn it!"
#23891
Reversal here. I heard a lot about NGE and wanted to watch it, but when I finally did I couldn't believe how pointless, annoying and downright half-arsed it was. People went on about it like it was something deep, but it turned out to be a complete waste of time. Possibly the worst anime ever made. Heavily ironic, since my favourite anime is FLCL.
#23892
This Troper hated DBZ on the principle of ''being female''. Three episodes later, she was in the middle school library with the boys, printing screenshots.
#23893
To this troper happened exactly the same just with Ranma (* gasp* ) added to the mix, cue to one year later when the first thing she ever search for on the internet once the install guy went away was... Ranma websites. Strange enough she already liked sailor moon, magic knight rayearth, speed racer and was warming to saint seiya.
#23894
This troper used to despise anything science fiction, that had cheesy special effects, hammy acting, was made in the 60's, was upbeat and optimistic, and had a reputation for obsessive, annoying fans. Guess who randomly found herself completely addicted to StarTrek?
#23895
Also, her real life Trek fan friends have bashed Voyager and Enterprise so much so frequently she finds herself making fun of them online and she only has ever watched TheOriginalSeries and the NextGeneration.
#23896
This troper knows of at least a dozen people who said that ''
24'' is the most ridiculous TV show they ever heard of. ......That is, until they watch a single episode. Then they become hopelessly addicted.
#23897
This troper flat-out refuses to watch ABC Family's family-unfriendly dramas. I've been watching FullHouse reruns on that channel until 2008, where it all went to Hell by adding a show about, as
Mom would put it and pardon my French, a "knocked-up teenage slut". That is where I believed that the channel was RuinedFOREVER, and I ''never'' went back to that channel.
#23898
Well, except for Christmastime, the only time of the year nowadays when this channel is actually family-friendly.
#23899
Wait, what? Whoah. Is this an actual person or is this the ultimate PoesLaw incarnate? Either way, I think we have a winner.
#23900
This troper had thought that all Anime was a crime against humanity and totally Made Of Fail. This primarily came from parental mockery of bad dubs (yes, they deserved it) and the best examples she saw around being 4Kids Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh! DBZ became strangely addictive even though she still mocked the SpeedOfPlot fight scenes. GundamWing began her true conversion, and the AXN Anime block with SakuraWars, Shin-Hakkenden, and El-Hazard completed the conversion. Die-hard Anime fan here!!
#23901
Same story with this troper. Except it wasn't GundamWing, it was {{FLCL}}
#23902
In danger of becoming a lister, this troper wishes to add that she was the same, but then FullMetalAlchemist changed everything.
#23903
This troper has a bad habit of doing this with most {{Shonen}} series and popular music.
#23904
I don't actually watch any anime(aside from a couple Miyazaki movies) , but I am annoyed to see so many pages with unnecessary Japanese titles, pages with too many anime examples, and the general blind praise EVERY SHOW gets (especially NeonGenesisEvangelion, what the hell is that). Doesn't help that all of them seem to include giant robots, little actual animation, and the same art style.
#23905
Not exactly surprising that they all have a similar art style since anime's, y'know,
an art style.
#23906
heh, yeah, you sound like an absolute expert on anime, so of course an expert like you would know all of them are poorly animated giant robot cartoons with the exact same art style.
#23907
Umm, did you read the title of this page?
#23908
Ahh, you just hit my {{Berserk Button}}. No my friend this is a whole different thing all together then insulting a single series. I can understand someone hating a series of Anime, a franchise, a genre of anime or, even if they had actually seen SOME anime from different companies, hating ALL of anime. This however isn't just insulting a show this is a whole medium of art you are insulting. Also for your small rants I counter with my own, the examples are from given shows showing examples which is what it is for, showing examples. The 'general blind praise' of course isn't done strictly to anime but EVERYTHING with a fan base. And just so you know I know of only maybe twenty total anime shows dealing with giant robots and many of them are in the same type of marketing like Gundam. As for the last parts on art style and little animation you yourself said you haven't seen any anime so my question is, how could you know? Basically there is a reason anime has a fairly large following and its not because of the stereotypes of it with only robots and tentacle hentai. Most are actual fairly well thought out and done in an excellent style, while others are done in such a way that can be compared to classics. Ahh... and one last thing, Cartoons denote Western origion and most Western animation especially the old ones and the really new ones, besides gems like Samurai Jack, have hardly any plot and mostly consist of single stand alone adventures that have no relevance to anything later while a Anime is Eastern in origion and is a plot driven story. Again I am sorry but nothing ticks me off more then someone who hasn't seen Anime complaining about Anime and if you wish to call me an Otaku, Weeaboo or any other name I will accept it for making this rant but...had to say something.
#23909
The win is strong in the one above me
#23910
Whoever wrote the one above the one above me, please tell you where you are so I can mail you a high five. Don't question how that would work, just accept.
#23911
The person above me is a hero!
#23912
Way to go dude/dudette! Nice to see someone else defending anime.
#23913
Do you happen to have a sister obessed with Fullmetal Alchemist because you sound a lot like one of my friends right now...
#23914
Thank you, poster! You made my day with your well-thought out and articulated argument. Now I just need to whip this thing out whenever somebody insults me for liking "those silly cartoons"!
#23915
The firsto ne who commented seems to have issues. "Most of them seem to include giant robots" <-- Any problem wit hthat? America knows they're awesome (exampel being Transformers), EVEN. BRITAIN. KNOWS. (Hello Cyberking) I don't touch anime either OFC, just saying.
#23916
This troper gleefully hates anime as a genre of animation, and tosses manga in for good measure, all the while admitting that he's seen maybe two feature-length anime (in their original... fluent in Japanese FTW) and read maybe four manga in his entire lifetime. Granted, they were really horrible, but still...
#23918
There's a difference between a medium and a genre. Do you know it?
#23919
That's like saying you hate all television shows because of a few crappy episodes of a crappy series you watched.
#23920
Once again, read the page title. Thank you.
#23921
I used to write off all anime as crap until someone convinced me to watch Planetes. Now I only write off most anime as crap.
#23923
But aren't the covers a fairly large part of the show? So if your friend doesn't like the covers, even if they are cool with the characters and the stories, there'd still be a big chunk of every episode that would piss your friend off. Just a quick glance through the other wiki shows that the second season averages at about 6 or 7 covers per episode. With every episode running about 45 minutes, that will mean your friend will want to punch out the tv screen every 6 or so minutes.
#23924
This troper hates ''{{Naruto}}'', even though she has never seen a single episode of it.
#23925
This troper felt naught but disdain for ''Naruto'' until she learned it was about ninjas and not another high school drama; this was because it was before every bookstore had a manga section and this troper's friend's description of Haku's story was "OMG that story was soooo sad!"; ninjas were ''never'' mentioned. #QUOTE#(same troper as the NGE example; just goes to show you, be ''very'' careful when describing stories to uninitiated friends!)
#23926
This troper was hugely biased against Naruto ("it's a ninja wearing ''orange''")-- until she tuned in during the Neji versus Kidomaru match.
#23927
This troper ''hates'' it when people bring that up. Not only is the whole "orange" thing part of his character development (the whole idea is that he's a bad ninja at the beginning, and after the TimeSkip there's a sizable bit of black on his outfit), but it's almost ''painfully'' clear from actually watching the show that he's not intended to be a stealth specialist.
#23928
This troper thought {{Naruto}} was just about fighting... until I actually read it. Now I hear such gems as this: #QUOTE# "Oh, I know a
seven year old who watches that. Not to be mean or anything, but why do you like it so much?"
#23929
This troper has seen someone describe (on youtube) that they don't like Naruto because "my friend said he saw it, and he told me stuff happens in the show that wouldn't happen in real life". Not only did he not see the show, he apparently hasn't seen anything remotely fictional within the span of his life.
#23930
This troper had seen a grand total of two Naruto episodes on Cartoon Network before a friend of hers convinced her to watch the show. Those two episodes being filler. It was a hard sell, but the friend had not been wrong before, and god was he right this time. She has cosplayed as Tsunade at a convention before, actually bleaching her hair for the part.
#23931
This troper and her little sister used to hate Naruto because her male classmates liked it. And they were idiots who ran around jabbing each other's butts. From this premise, they concluded that it was stupid. They thought that for a long time, but slowly began to like it. Quote: "Hey sis, do you think we're starting to like Naruto?" "I hope not." Moral: Things can grow on you. Like mold on bread.
#23932
Similarly, this troper dislikes ''{{Naruto}}'' and ''CodeGeass'' based solely on the style. Ironically, he watches ''{{Bleach}}'' almost religiously, and is quite certain he would probably ''like'' the two series if he actually gave them a chance.
#23933
Style is also the reason this Troper never ever ever got into, and will never get into ''FruitsBasket''. Even though this Troper is a girl, she much prefers shonen manga. And even though her friends gush about the manga, she cannot bring herself to go past the first few pages. Based on back cover/ friend summaries/ other bits and bobs, this Troper finds it dull and uninteresting. If this troper were to give it a chance, she might possibly like it. Except for the fact thet she'd be dying at every panel. It's not this Troper
complaining about a mangs she does not read, it's loathing a manga she doesn't read. Ouch.
#23934
This Troper will freely admit that he does not find the premise of Naruto interesting and refuses to give it a chance, but struggles constantly to avoid invoking this trope.
It would be so easy too...
#23935
Subversion, This troper occasionally watches anime. I read several of the trade paperback Naruto books, attempted to watch the anime, watched bleach (subs), Code Geass, NeonGenesisEvangelion but he doesn't like it/never finished it. And he likes worse anime for the mocking oppertunites, and just bad (in his opinion) anime in general. I am a anime machoist.
#23936
This troper's mother has fallen prey to this. When this I was starting learning how to draw, and primarily focused on manga and anime-type drawings and styles, my mother said "That is not art." This happened to be my BerserkButton. Ranting ensues.
#23937
My dad does that. He doesn't say anything when he finds me reading manga or watching anime, but when I was explaining anime to my mom, he told her "They stole it from us!" I didn't bother wasting breath explaining that it wasn't "stolen" from the US and that it's a different art style entirely. Not worth the argument.
#23938
Anime was originally a simplification and adaptation of such Disney classics as Disney/SnowWhite, Bambi, and MickeyMouse, just look up the history of Osamu Tezuka, so I guess one could argue that StrawmanHasAPoint.
#23939
This troper once had his own issues regarding certain anime types, but once he tried to be more open and tried to see an example of shows he doesn't watch like
this certain show you'd say "filled with pure manliness and awesomeness", he finally understood what makes it to be so loved around the world, and ''only'' for that specific title. On the other hand. this troper still have issues about his circle of friends who ''exactly'' fit into this trope... feared to be some of these members of the UnpleasableFanbase...
#23940
This troper recently saw a topic on
/co/ where someone asked if it was right for him to "rage" about ''Twilight'' despite not reading any of the books or watching the movie. In retrospect, I regret not reading it to find out whether or not HilarityEnsues.
#23941
This troper's brother picks a fight with her over her love of ''Twilight'' every time it comes up. When asked why he has such a problem with it (and with her liking it), despite not having read it or seen the movie, he invariably answers: "Vampires don't sparkle!"
#23942
This troper believes that he has found his separated at brith triplit. Also, under the pretenses that vampires burn by the sun Twilight has violated not one, but TWO rules of Vampires. Vampires burn in the sunlight, and sparkling is just reflected light, and under the assumption that all light harms vampires (including artificial light, but to a MUCH lesser degree), thus concluding that the sparkling would harm Edward. Also as Joe once said,
It is like falling in love with a cheescake,
also the book is moronic too
#23943
This troper actually has a friend who read the book ''just so they could argue against it without evoking this trope''.
#23944
Ditto this troper. The only way she can stand reading it, is to jot MST3K-like snarky comments in the margins of her copy.
#23945
This Troper has banned her sister from reading Twilight for the absolute certainty that if she does, she will rant twice as much about how stupid it is. Said sister tends to believe that since she's a pretty good writer, everything she doesn't like is utter crap. She mainly gets her information about "how much it sucks" from forums she loves to read just to spite her younger sister. It's a case of complaing about books she doesn't read for the main purpose of making her sister feel bad for liking aformentioned books.
#23946
This Troper is actually on the other side of this banning. After bashing Literature/{{Twilight}} for so long he decided to actually read the first book so as to decide if all of the hate was really worth it. He asked his sister to read the book and she decided that he was not allowed to do so as he would just look for ways to tear the book apart. Please note that before the hype started going out of hand that This Troper wanted to read the books because of all of the cool things his sister was saying about them. Perhaps this would have been different if he had read them before he decided to mock them?
#23947
This troper went on about Literature/{{Twilight}} so much (having only heard Tv tropes like comments and mad ranting fans, who once attacked because I said I thought the Literature/{{Twilight}} vampires looked retarded) talking about how people either love it or hate it and then go on about it... That she received the whole series for Christmas. Expecting crap, she read it. I'm afraid I fell in love, though I WILL discuss the bad points witout going insane. I just ''like'' it.
#23948
This troper was once dragged to the movie by my fangirl sisters, and I hated it so much that I decided that the books must also suck.
#23949
This troper tried watching the movie to avoid this trope but at the 10:15 mark had to turn it off becuase it was causing him physical pain.
#23950
I tried to watch it just to see why it was so hated and ended up turning it off about 30 minutes in because it was so boring.
#23951
I had a great time watching all the movies. That was because I could make fun of them every five seconds.
#23952
This troper had heard of Twilight a couple of times before the movies were released, arousing greater popularity for the series. Wanting to know what the hype was all about, I read as much of the synopses and facts on Wikipedia and the Twilight Wikia as I could. Right from the start, I could detect Sue-ness coming from Bella and was disgusted by the ''Breaking Dawn'' synopsis. Recently, I read my sister's copy of ''Twilight'' just to be able to say that I ''have'' read the book and therefore have a right to bash it if I want to. My verdict? If I had gone with Mom to her class reunion instead of reading the book, I wouldn't have been so bored and drowsy. I love parties anyway.
#23953
To be fair, there are certain things that even straight men who are really secure with their sexuality can't enjoy. Twilight is one of those, which is why I hate it without reading it.
#23954
This troper's first exposure to Twilight was in college, where he was told constantly by the girls in his class hat it was this brilliant new vampire series. Now, this was my first year in a new art school. I assumed that college students at an Art school would know something about what qualifies as good writing, so when I was hearing my classmates discussing this work and telling me that it was "quality literature" I imagined there might be something to it. Then I saw a mock-up alternate cover for the first book on a wall for an assignment. I read the back which quoted the "Of three things I was certain" line and my jaw hit the floor. THIS is what my classmates, supposedly well educated college students, are calling "high quality literature?" I just couldn't believe it. There had to be more to the story. I went home and read a synopsis on the other wiki and it just kept getting worse. And this was only the beginning, when it was just a popular book that surely would come and go and never mean anything. sigh.
#23956
I tried to avoid this trope by reading Stephenie Meyer's The Host. Sure, it's not Twilight, but I don't have much interest in that genre and figured it would give me a good idea of her writing style. I got about fifty pages in before I dropped it. I realized that the more I thought about what I had read, the less I liked it. She barely describes anything, apart from the physical appearance of character. Everything is blunt and repetitive. And for being a science fiction book, she seems to have no idea about what real-world science says about the things the book deals with (i.e. the psychological and neurological workings of the human mind).
#23957
Interestingly, the general census on TheHost is it's better than Twilight or at least decent. Make of that as you will.
#23958
This troper seriously tried to read through ''Blood Noir'', the latest in the ''AnitaBlake'' seires, just to see what all the hype was about, and simply could not choke it all down. After reading through something that looks
like this for example, I imagined that the scissors depicted on the front cover were for jamming into your eyes to distract you from the pain. With no other familiarity with the series, I made the mistake of assuming that the rest of the books were equally bad, unaware of the
shark jumping generally blamed for ruining an otherwise decent series.
#23959
This troper, who absolutely loves ''{{Lost}}'', is annoyed by more than one friend being put off to it (and consequently calling it crap) because of a scene lasting less than 2 minutes in the pilot where the monster shows up and promptly leaves. Always, ALWAYS that scene. The worst part is that the monster doesn't even matter to the story.
#23960
There's also the "LOL ARE THEY OFF THE ISLAND YET?" morons. Maybe if they'd ''watch'' the show, they'd understand why the characters are still on it.
#23963
Yeah, it's true. I've also heard "I watched 3 or 4 episodes randomly and I didn't like it", when you have to watch it since the begining to enjoy it. Then there are the "AN ISLAND WITH POLAR BEARS LOL THAT'S STUPID" idiots... yeah.
#23964
Then again it's a perfectly valid argument that any show where you have to watch from the absolute start to have any idea what's going on has writing problems. Not able to start mid season? Fine. Not able to start with the season premier? Not so much.
#23965
YMMV. I don't see any reason why a show should waste established fans' time by constantly reminding us what we already know every time a new season starts. Especially since those rare moments where it did occur (such as Sawyer feeling the need to remind everyone in the room what Michael did, as if they could forget) it came off as unnatural. Really, plot-heavy series should be watched from episode 1 almost always. The show may be complicated, but how to watch it isn't.
#23966
Happened with this troper as well. Hated the show the entire time it was running, but when my sister started watching it on Netfix: First I tried to ignore it; after that I started doing those sneak glance, not-supposed-to-look-but-are things; next I was asking questions about what was happening,
and then I was hooked.
#23967
This troper has trouble getting anyone to watch the re-imagined {{Battlestar Galactica}} probably because of the name. On a side note, nearly everyone wants to watch the entire TV series after watching the pilot.
#23968
This troper was endlessly frustrated by all the people he knew who watched the ''{{Seinfeld}}'' finale without seeing any of the episodes that came before it, hated it, and used that as an excuse to claim that the show sucked and was overrated. In the first place, a finale should never be your first exposure to a series, and in the second place, the actual quality of said episode is vastly argued over by people that actually like most of the show.
#23969
As someone who hangs out on music forums, FallOutBoy, Panic! At the Disco, My Chemical Romance, {{Korn}}, Creed, {{Slipknot}}, and any and all Rap & Hip Hop all get ferociously bashed by people who have probably heard maybe one or no songs by said bands and just try and follow the crowd.
#23970
As well, I've had trouble getting people to listen to artists like {{Buckethead}} or FrankZappa because they tend to be weird. And judge it as something they won't like just because it isn't the norm.
#23971
This troper has had multiple conversations with stupid people that went like this. #QUOTE# Me: Let's blast some Iron Maiden! #QUOTE# Stupid People: Ugh, I don't want to listen to some
Satanic screamo band. #QUOTE# Me: ...Have you ever heard their music? #QUOTE# Stupid People: No but I heard they wrote a song worshipping Satan and 666! And all metal is just Satanic screaming anyway.
#23972
What bothers me is that every young fan of the teeny-bopper singers hate any rock band with a passion, because they are under the false impression that anything rock music and not on the Disney Channel is "emo" for example, a girl in 7th grade actually told me this: #QUOTE# Me: Hey, do you like Green Day? #QUOTE# Girl: No, I hate emo bands. #QUOTE# Me: Umm... What?
#23973
Several seniors have approached this troper saying that the reason I'm such a cynical, poor excuse of a teenager is because, well, the music I listen to. Here's the kicker, they don't know what I listen to. If they did, they'd know I listened to a combination of The Beatles, Yes, The Rolling Stones, Guns 'n' Roses, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Warren Zevon, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Old bands, etc. Not to say I don't listen to some Metal from time to time, but I thoroughly enjoy a good song from Frank Sinatra. TakeThat, Old People!
#23974
This troper has similar problems. He listens to the old greats of rock, classical music, Radiohead, Coldplay, and various other non-metal bands. Yet he gets called a metalhead because he listens to Korn and Slipknot. And he only really listens to Slipknot's newest album, which is more like traditional metal than the(incredibly) snark-worthy nu metal they used to do.
#23975
The Rat Pack is where it's at.
#23976
@/{{Radioactive Zombie}} is grateful to have a Jazz station that plays it 24/7, uninterrupted. EVERYONE ELSE HE KNOWS DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT IT UNTIL I PLAY IT. In fact, he's also complained at about it by his Uncle, who deems Jazz boring, but listens to gangsta rap and Journey. The latter is acceptable, the former is not, and is the bane of my HighSchool existence.
#23977
This troper has the opposite problem -- thanks to dressing like
Bree Van de Kamp Hodge she frequently gets people complaining loudly and pointedly about whatever innocuous bland pop music is popular at the moment despite not being able to recognize most of it because, Ella Fitzgerald excepted, her taste runs more towards Bad Company, Blue Oyster Cult, Janis Joplin, Queen, early Rolling Stones, Styx, and Ziggy Stardust era David Bowie. At least watching their jaws drop is entertaining...
#23978
This troper, when she was 11-13 years old, listened to lots of pop music a la Hilary Duff, Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson, etc. She would be dismayed to visit Amazon and see all the 1-star reviews dragging down the album's rating that went something like "OMG U ARE STOOPID IF U LIDSTEN TO THIS SO-CALLED MUSIC BCUZ HILARY (Avril/Ashlee/etc.) IS A BITCH AND ALL POP MUSIC SUXS SO DON"T BYE THIS ALBUM." The only thing worse than these irrational haters were the pompous forty-year-old male self-appointed music critics going on about how they didn't "get" the music, so clearly it had no depth or value and completely missing the fact that the music was aimed at thirteen-year-old girls, you know, rather than forty year-old men. The worst one of that ilk this troper ever saw was an almost page-long rant on Ashlee Simpsons' second album talking about how the album "epitomized everything wrong with the record industry today" because she was a BLONDE(!!!) so clearly she was talentless. I wish I was kidding. Now that I and my musical tastes have grown up a bit (Sinead O'Connor, Sarah [=McLachlan=], Tori Amos, etc.), I recognize that, yeah, these albums aren't "great" (in the patronizing, holier-that-thou sense of music critics) but you know what? They have decent (if not great) voices, and they're fun, easy to sing along with, and easy to dance to. Which is kind of the point of "pop" music, no?
#23979
I agree. I listen to a variety of music, including pop music, but
my favourite band just happens to be a pop group. And you have no idea how much stick I've gotten from people for being a fan, usually something to do with how their music is guitar-pop/pop-rock means that they are an insult to "real" musicians. (What does that even mean anyway? I thought anyone who made music could be considered as a musician). I personally hate the idea that a performer is automatically crap just because they are a mainstream pop musician. Not saying my favourite band are the greatest band to ever exist, but some people need to realise that some songs are just fun and enjoyable to listen to by certain people, regardless of genre or popularity.
#23980
This troper read somewhere that country was "the white man's blues." Now, after putting himself through the
godawful country station on
GTA:SA, he came to this conclusion: Country'd be white man's blues if blues sucked ass. The nasally voices and twangy guitars were white man's mainstream gangsta rap. They were all about the singer's bitches and hoes! And their pimped tractors. "Louisiana Woman, Mississipi Man," indeed. Good country gets labeled as Southern Rock. As kings and queens bow and play for you...
#23981
And whatever happened to Western music?
#23982
So you're saying that country is white man's blues, then?
#23983
This troper refuses to listen to Leonard Cohen simply out of HypeAversion after having heard WAY TOO MANY critics fawn over his stuff with such unstoppable hyperbole, that often feels more like they're trying to score coolness points than a real love of music. However, she also recently learned that actually, Sufjan Stevens and TomWaits are pretty good underneath all the hipster-drool, so will likely change her ways soon, and give Mr Cohen a chance.
#23984
This troper gets a lot of crap for listening to Björk - for every person that has listened to her music and legitimately disliked it, there are at least three others that dismiss her on the grounds that "lol isnt she that chick that wore the duck/they made fun of on snl/family guy/whatever?"
#23985
This troper won an argument with her classical-music-buff father by pointing out that Jazz, in its early days, suffered many of the same criticisms that Rock and its various offspring have. Jazz is now about a century old and widely considered "high culture".
#23986
This Troper was
having a bad go of it when it came to relating to other people's video game tastes for a while. When EGM had a negative preview of DeadRising from the ObviousBeta of it from E3 2005, she bent to the pressure and briefly hopped aboard the "this game's gonna suck" bandwagon. Then, the game came out. A magazine that I actually like, Game Informer, gave it a glowing review. Of course, other magazines gave it a positive review, but Game Informer's was the one that convinced me that the game was worth buying an Xbox 360 for. Which I did. Bad impression proved gloriously wrong.
#23987
This troper, in a discussion on Wii Virtual Console users who think ''x'' game sucks because they don't know anything about it, came across someone who says that if a VC release is a "generic"
Shoot Em Up, he doesn't need to know anything about it to not like it. Well, you know what? Tell me what genre of games you're into so I can classify all of its games as "generic" as well.
#23988
This troper remembers his friend bashing the entire ''FinalFantasy'' series for having "stupid looking girly men with big swords and having to wait your turn to fight", despite the fact that only about 3 of the 12 games in the main series (would be 4 but I don't count
Vaan as a major character anymore) have actually had androgynous characters as party members, the swords were only really over sized those
two times, and the person saying this was playing a Pokemon game at the time, which is more turned-based then any FinalFantasy game then the first three. This troper assumes that since FF VII is regarded as the best people automatically assume that whatever it does is the norm.
#23989
Also on that note, ''KingdomHearts'': this tropers brother stated "THAT GAME LOOKS TOO CARTOONY SO IT SUCKS" followed by the retort "* gasp* HOW DARE THEY MAKE DISNEY CHARACTERS LOOK CARTOONY".
#23990
I didn't want to play Kingdom Hearts because, due to it having Disney characters in it, I figured it'd be childish. Then, when I decided to actually play it, my PS2 crapped out (though, I'm sure it's a good game and plan to eventually get a PS2 that works so I can actually play it).
#23991
I hated it without playing it first and try to find any excuse to not like it. Now after giving it a chance, my answer is "it's mediocre at best".
#23992
This troper is guilty of harboring an intense hate for Final Fantasy as well.
#23993
Show of hands, when we all heard about Kingdom Hearts as a Disney/SquareEnix project, who didn't act like it was a dumb idea?
#23994
After seeing
this, I didn't.
#23995
This Troper has encountered GeometryWars, a 2d shmup within the same subgenre as {{Robotron}}, dismissed as being a 3d SpaceInvaders clone and therefore not a real game. (The arguement doesn't make sense disregarding the factual inaccuracies about GeometryWars anyway since it boils down to "Like space invaders therefore not a real game,"
but at least the arguement was entertaining)
#23996
This troper's friend would go on and on about how ''AvatarTheLastAirbender'' sucked horribly and was a total rip-off of {{Naruto}} until she actually watched a few episodes of season three. After the
finale aired, when this troper brought up her friend's previous hatred, the response was a quick, back-tracking, "I never said that!"
#23997
This troper's brother was getting exasperated at her trying it out for the first time and watching a marathon. When she asked what his problem with it was, he said that he used to like that kind of show until he realised every episode has the same plot. Until this troper said that that was one of the things she was enjoying about it, that they didn't do that. Her brother grumbled off.
#23998
On this very wiki, this troper has noticed that the CareBears page was written by someone who apparently DidNotDoTheResearch and cobbled something together out of their own preconceptions and a few trope examples, and every mention of TheGetAlongGang seems to simply be based on the comments of Mark Evanier, with the actual page taken from Wikipedia. Given the rather surprising amount of respect MyLittlePony is given on its own page, this is most disappointing.
#23999
Well, can you blame them? Who would admit to actually knowing
something about those shows?
#24000
Given how much content MyLittlePony has, yes, yes I can.
#24001
We're averting this trope! This Troper is one of the editors on the [=MLP=] page. I actually ''did'' sit down and watch all the episodes available on [=DVD=]. Conversely, I haven't seen "The Get Along Gang" in over twenty years.
#24002
The Get Along Gang page is still pretty bad off. For one, The Buddy Bears were a parody of TheComplainerIsAlwaysWrong itself. not this show. And really, besides the title, I never really got why it's counted as the poster boy for that trope. I saw the Nelvana pilot and a handful of episodes, and not one used it beyond Bingo betting the clubhouse without telling anyone.
#24003
''KimPossible''. This troper now despises this show with the hatred of a thousand suns based solely on all the mentions it receives on this site. Maybe I'll watch it one day and be pleasantly surprised...
#24004
This troper felt the same way...once. Then his niece made him watch it. Love me some ''KimPossible''!
#24005
Watch it, then you can join in and increase the amount of mentions it receives on this site! It's fun!
#24006
This troper has an online friend who refuses to watch and has never seen ''TheSimpsons''. Seriously. Partially because of
all the hype, partially because all the advertisements he's seen play up the
potty humour... he refuses to accept that it may actually be worthwhile entertainment and constantly rags on it for its purported sins against mankind.
#24007
This troper knows what that troper is talking about. Back in elementary school, I had classmate who wrote a letter to Fox demanding that they cancel newly-minted animated sitcom "The Bart Simpson Show." This troper's second-grade sensibilities were offended.
#24008
This is similar to this troper's aversion to Family Guy. He ''would'' have watched it, maybe, if its commercials didn't turn him off the show completely.
#24009
This troper can sum up the majority of detractors of Ruby-Spears'
Megaman thusly: 50% base their opinions of it off of a BigNameFan's negative opinion of its problem with Classic canon. The other 50% simply take one look at the redesigns and go off on a tangent. (Ironically, said BigNameFan had actually watched every single episode.)
#24010
This troper's friend dismissed MuramasaTheDemonBlade because "how can it look good in 2D?" when I told him it was 2D. Hope he knows it's
one of the game's selling points.
#24011
Where this troper lives, Western Animation as a whole falls into this, to a certain point. For example, people who watched Cartoon Network when were children are ALWAYS going to say, now that they're teenagers, that today's Cartoon Network's shows are stupid, bland, ugly, a rip-off of something, etc. Of course, none of them ever watched them. This troper had to listen to one of the most ridiculous rants about FostersHomeForImaginaryFriends that described the show nothing like it actually is, and pretty much the same about AvatarTheLastAirbender and every single new Cartoon Cartoon or Nicktoon. Seriously, this troper can't stand people that say "Yeah, when I was a kid we had good shows, now all we have is crap". Because, you know, you have to WATCH something before saying it is crap...
#24012
Unless you have, like this Troper, watched many of those shows. While many of them like ''SixTeen'', ''TotalDramaIsland'', and ''TheMarvelousMisadventuresOfFlapjack'' are actually pretty decent and can earn a laugh or two (if you're into some of that stuff), most of them are crap. Crap animation. Crap stories. Crap. If you go back and watch some older cartoons (even by only a few years) there is definitely a different quality to them.
#24013
@/{{Jonn}} suspects there's a combination of SturgeonsLaw, NostalgiaFilter, and using a non-representative sample, as well as simply possibly having an uptick in quality during the time sampled. The principle here is the same thing as the one that makes a lot of people badmouth popular music as soon as they're out of their teens. You simply don't remember the bad shows, ''because'' they were bad, and some of the new shows are going to be crap anyway. And for what it's worth, my favorite CN shows a few years back were {{IGPX}}, {{MegasXLR}}, and reruns of SamuraiJack. I also distinctly recall hating RaveMaster.
#24014
This troper's father had a confirmed dislike of all poodles, despite never having seen one without those puffy poofy haircuts. (He changed his mind when he saw one au natural)
#24015
Poodles aren't the only ones who get this...Whoever does NOT own a Chihuahua hates Chihuahuas and says that them and every small dogs are walking baseballs with legs with an ego the size of Jupiter. Never mind that this troper knows PLENTY of Chihuahuas who will sit in your lap for hours and never EVER bark.
#24016
Stereotypical yappy-dog behavior is generally the result of bad training; more often than not, the dog's smaller size makes problem behaviors "cute" because it's too small to do any real damage, sort of like how it's cute when your little brother learns that you make a funny noise when you get hit over the head with a baseball bat, except the dog doesn't get big enough for the owner to think it ought to be taught not to do that. Plus there's the stereotype that chihuahuas are favored by Paris Hilton types, and the end result is a very puntable little leggy baseball.
#24017
This Editor has seen so many parents and such rant about American Girl dolls and characters and how they're just so awful and expensive and a waste of money and blah blah blah, and yet never do any of the research beyond complaining. There are still people badmouthing the company over a one year partnership with a company that also supported reproductive rights and positive sexuality...in ''2005''.
#24018
This troper's friend refuses to read ''{{Watchmen}}'' on the basis that he read the {{Wikipedia}} article on it, and "it sounded boring".
#24019
Oh man you don't know what your missing.
#24020
I know what he's missing, but I've given up trying to persuade him.
#24021
This troper has a friend who refuses to read ''Watchmen'' because "it's that stupid DarkAge stuff where every problem is solved by violence and anti heroes who kill people professionally are portrayed in a positive light".
#24024
This troper did this with ''Literature/{{Twilight}}'' for long time (nearly a year). Then she started actually reading the book and found that most of her assumptions checked out.
#24025
This troper agrees, her friends pressured her into reading the book and she despised it. WHY WERE THEY PLAYING BASEBALL?!
#24026
Because they're too bishounen for American-style football?
#24027
This troper, despite being male, probably would have read Twilight... then he found out about the sparkling vampires, and decided that this series could rot in hell.
#24028
This troper has a sister who thinks Twilight is the greatest thing ever and would always talk about it during and after she finished reading one of the books. Of course, this means that he basically knows the entire story inside-out. Yet, he still watched the first movie just so he knew that he wasn't complaining for nothing. He wasn't. The final decision to skip actually reading anything of it came after his sister told him that
Bella's half-vamp daughter grew up quickly and perfectly, providing no hardship whatsoever for the parents. For the record, this troper thinks it would have been a brilliant inversion had the kid been born an unholy terror and the book been dedicated to that. Alas, it was not to be.
#24029
This Troper absolutely hates Bon Jovi, even though he has only heard Livin on a Prayer and You Give Love a Bad Name. It doesn't help that his classmates sing it all the time and consider them to be one of the greatest metal bands of the eighties. This troper is a huge fan of thrash metal and constantly tell them that Bon Jovi is overrated and are posers.
#24030
This troper never fails to be stunned by all the people who refuse to watch ''
24'' because...they've seen '''''how much fans of the show love it'''''. And they don't want to end up addicted like them.
#24032
This troper, as a general rule, cannot stand people who live this trope, and can even count herself as one of the many ''Twilight'' haters who read all four books just to be able to hate them legitimately. That said, I hate
24 even though I have never watched it, because I find its idea that TortureAlwaysWorks both disgusting and flat-out incorrect. I am fully aware of my own hypocrisy, and I will probably watch the show one day in order to rectify it, but...let's just say I'm in no hurry.
#24033
This troper recently heard one of his friend's friends saying "people who play D&D will never get laid." I really wanted to smack him for that. It probably doesn't help that the person in question is a
teenage boy and earlier this week had a 30-minute conversation about PORN.
#24034
This Troper knows someone who insists that ''CodeGeass'' is the worst thing humanity has ever made, based solely on the first four episodes and rare bits picked up through discussion. Any suggestion that his opinion might be invalidated by lack of actual experience is roundly ignored.
#24035
This troper started out refusing to watch ''TransformersAnimated'', solely based on the designs and the fact that Optimus Prime was not the super-old, wise leader every other series had him. Finally a friend got her to watch it, and well, let's just say that my IM statement is {{squee}}ing over the release date for the third season.
#24036
This troper ''still'' refuses to watch the show, having been TaintedByThePreview and first few episodes. Seriously, ''human supervillains'' used to "keep the Decepticons a relevant threat"? Optimus dying and reviving ''within the first 3 episodes?!'' NoJustNo.
#24037
The above troper is a fine example. The show starts slow, but the second and, most of all, the third season more than make up for its initial buggers. And even the examples mentioned manage to do their job: the Decepticons ''are'' big threats (even if big goofs), and Prime dying was a good (though an admittedly cheap) way to introduce the power of the plot-device MacGuffin Allspark Key. All things considered, compared to earlier TF series, it is more of a "Yes Just Yes" show than anything. Or so I, once a skeptic hater of the promotional art material, say.
#24038
I go to a Christian college. In an unexpected subversion, one of my classmates admitted to allowing his children to read ''Harry Potter'' because # The values portrayed are much better executed; especially those of redemption, a central value of Christianity # The descriptions of magick are hilariously inaccurate and could not possibly inspire children to follow them
#24039
This troper used to be driven nuts on another forum by a user who would always watch the first episode of any given anime series and then badmouth it like he'd seen the whole thing, claiming that the first episode should always be indicative of the entire series. Made all the worse when started defending his holy grail {{WITCH}} from someone who didn't like the first episode...
#24040
I think I know that user. Mr. "WITCH is the best animated show ever and all other shows should follow in it's example!" Lord, I wanted to like {{WITCH}}, but because of that moron....
#24041
This troper saw a poster in an ImageBoard declare his hatred of TheCloneWars. When asked what he didn't like about it, he admitted that he'd never seen it and was basing his opinion on posts from a different image board.
#24042
This Troper never watched it because she fell out of keeping track of Star Wars and because Anakin's apprentice seemed like a Mary Sue. She's never watched more than a few minutes and some previews.
#24043
This troper used to have a habit of not trying a game because "it looked dumb." It took me 8 years before I gave Metal Gear Solid a chance. It is now a personal favorite. Other games I rejected initially, but now will happily play: Megaman Zero (ZX probably would have been subjected to the same treatment if I hadn't played Zero before hand), Final Fantasy and Castlevania.
#24044
This troper observed what initially appeared to be a StopHavingFunGuy complaining about a game being easy and boring due to being too slow and having too much
grind. After many days of heated debate, drama, and some flame warring, the guy made a post talking about the "hours" of gameplay it takes to grind your way up, and people realized where his attitude was coming from: The game displays a times in MM:SS:ss format, so a time of 4 minutes and 54.21 seconds would be displayed as 4:54:21. The guy thought the times were in HH:MM:SS format, and thus would interpret such a time as 4 hours, 54 minutes, and 21 seconds. (You'd think the occasional third number that was more than 60 would be a major tip-off.) By the way, the game he was complaining about?
Tetris: The Grand Master 3.
#24045
This troper admits to having done this about Xbox Live's multiplayer on the 360, even though he actually has SOME basis considering that almost everyone who played the original Xbox live plays it on the 360.
#24046
Almost every FPS multiplayer or 360 player in general is tainted with the "Croyt" and "Chocolate Milk Kid" images that preceded them, as well as many of the non-hostile players who are Sober. It doesn't help that even in games that don't have this taint as much as others (Halo 3 is the most tainted, Team Fortress 2 probably has the least taint) you run into at least one "Concentration camp" server where people yell at you.
#24047
TeamFortress2 has less taint? All i can say s that you are one of the many FanDumb that screams NoTrueScotsman on griefers on TF2.
#24049
This Troper thought The West Wing seemed pretty boring and didn't understood why it was so popular and got so many awards. then she saw an episode, nearly by accident. It was "20 hours in america" and she fell in love with the show.
#24050
When this Troper was a wee one, she thought ''FullmetalAlchemist'' was ridiculous because: "Animes (note the 's') don't have blonde main characters!" Please forgive this Troper, she was young. She was still in her fledgling anime years (as in Pokemon, Digimon, and so on) and now FMA is probably one of her favorites, with ''Naruto'' along with it for some time.
#24051
We forgive you, and you are not the only one.
#24052
This troper comes across heaps of people who hate Buffy based on the name and the premise. Most of them won't even be convinced otherwise when they're told that despite the name and premise admittedly sounding bad, it's generally considered one of the best TV series ever made.
#24053
This troper's cousin didn't want to see Benjamin Button because he said that he already knew everything that happened from the trailers. He then went on to say how a predictable sounding comedy looked great. Sigh.
#24054
{{Axis Powers Hetalia}}. At face value, this troper thought it was a yaoi manga about gay WWII soldiers. Kind of odd, you know. After reading a couple of the comics and watching a few episodes, this troper realized that it wasn't as bad as she thought and is now literally obsessed with the series and is constantly up-to-date on it. It's kind of funny looking back at all the hate her and her friends had given it just a few months ago.
#24055
This troper gleefully rags her mother about slamming ''Harry Potter''. Ten years ago, said troper suffered a horrible bout of depression after breaking up with her fiance. Said troper's mother got it into her head that said troper was depressed because she thought said troper was reading Harry Potter novels. Her reasoning: she'd read some especially egregious Harry Potter-slamming articles which pointed out all the dark stuff in it, without noting all the very broad humor that's much more pronounced in the series, especially the earlier books. Said Troper had to inform her that said troper had never even cracked the cover of a Harry Potter book and that her depression stemmed from breaking up with the man she thought she was going to marry. Later on, said Troper read the books and told her mother, "If someone gets depressed from reading Harry Potter, there is something mortally wrong with their psyche."
#24056
This troper has a friend who complains about {{Gears of War}} and constantly says that there's only one good part. When I asked him how much he had played he admitted that he's only played one level.
#24057
Of course there's only one good part!
The shotgun!
#24058
I'm admittedly another person who does this regarding ''Lierature/{{Twilight}}'', but I really have read enough sporks and the like to know that it's terrible. I got into an argument with a friend about it - she loves it and doesn't like ''PushingDaisies'', I'm the opposite. She insisted that I couldn't criticise Twilight without reading it, and when I asked if she'd seen Pushing Daisies, she said yes, but then it turned out that she didn't have a brilliant grasp of it, thinking that someone dies for ''every minute'' Chuck is alive, when it's just the first minute. I'm tempted to read the damn books just so I can critique them with authority.
#24059
After the author of ''Let's Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste'' went on TheColbertReport, this troper's friends loudly proclaimed that they would never read it, having only heard that it was about Celine Dion. In fact, it uses Dion's music as a jumping-off point to explore how people make arbitrary judgments regarding taste -- including negative judgments of anything related to Celine Dion.
#24060
A friend of this troper hate all games made, published or other way related to Square-Enix (or any other Japanese studio), just because he saw ''FinalFantasyVII'' once as a kid and decided it was boring.
#24061
This troper is guilty of fussy eating. However, this troper's had bad experience with trying new foods as a child that have somewhat messed him up.This troper, as a toddler, ate a banana for the first time in his life, only to become extremely ill to the brink of death after eating it. Never touched a banana again. He also threw up several times after trying a pickle for the first time.
#24062
Trouble with people thinking your major is an easy A? You're in good company!
#24063
This troper can't say Communications is an easy "A" with a straight face after watching a bunch of Engineering Majors who "needed an A" in his class fail miserably.
#24064
Even within the "hard majors" there exists this! This troper was called "A gardener looking for an easy degree" by being a Horticulture Major. Of course the people who said that have only ever taken the introductory course and have never even looked at the requirements FOR a horticulture degree. I wouldn't call a major that requires the dreaded Chemistry and Calculus an "Easy Major". Chemistry and Calculus requirements exist solely to make Freshmen cry.
#24065
They obviously never met a Music major. We have way more courses than them that aren't 4 credit courses, and millions of extra-curricular activities that we have to attend. Not to mention studying for your academic courses AND practicing your instrument (if you are a Performance major).
#24066
OMG, yes! This Arts major troper witnessed so many people take the Basic Photography class at his school "just to hang out and cop an A". Cue the curses when half of them couldn't even figure out to ''open'' the camera, let alone load it, and we won't even start on something basic like preparing proofs. Didn't know whether to laugh or cry!
#24067
Art also has this. The art majors are often up '''very''' late working on their portfolio, not to mention art is ''sooooo'' competitive.
#24068
It goes the other way too. Certain classes can never get filled because students are convinced that they'll hate the class, or that it'll be boring. This troper ducked Philosophy for three semesters because of this attitude. Until he actually took the class and enjoyed so much he added Philosophy as a minor.
#24069
When I was told that all liberal arts was easy, I told it to my sister, and she spent at least ten minutes laughing. Try writing 18 page essays with twice as many "Minimum" Citations as her mother's senior lab reports nearly ''every week''.
#24070
Everyone seems to think Psychology is just asking people
"and how does that make you feel" and that I'm just doing it for an easy degree. I had to learn the different parts of the brain, their functions, some of the various disorders of the brain, memorize several theorists, the years the lived, their most famous work, then learn another theorist that completely contradicts the previous one... and that's just 101.
#24071
As a Communication Arts/Film and Broadcasting History major, I got to hear from my friends all about how my classes were nothing but 'watching movies and TV all day.' Until they took an Intro to Film class and were amazed at how much reading and writing were involved. I always wanted to have them take a grad level course in silent film (with the requisite 40 page term paper, usually graded by the same people that wrote the books you cited) just to watch their heads explode.
#24072
Not to mention that many of the films you're required to watch for these courses are freaking ''boring!''
#24073
This Troper is determined never to use Lynux based on having a brief negative experience which could arguably be attributed to the hardware and the fact that webcomics trying to promote it make it look like a system which should only be used by professional programmers.
#24074
So this troper was talking with her sister about a recent going to the movies, where she had to put aside seeing Up in favor of another movie so my dad could watch it too (he is prejudiced against animation on principle *sulks* ) so we ended seeing state of play thinking I would hate it, I didn't in fact I quite enjoyed, but I really wanted to see up and still wants, wait I haven't finished, when my sister asked about up and I told her it was from Pixar and mentioned the word "animation" she replied. But that is for kids!!!! Why would you want to see that!!! *head-desks* My father agreeing completely with her.. (Triple use of the trope for the win!!!) Okay I can tolerate this coming from my father as he is almost seventy but from my 20-something sister, no way! And thank God, I never lived with her, more exchanges of this kind would be unberable.
#24075
Ahhh, where to begin. I used to hate Ouran because I thought it was all about gay guys, then I saw this
video and saw it, now I love it. I also hated Haruhi Suzumiya because of all the dance cosplay skits about it then I learned about the plot, again a favorite. I also hated Code Geass until I played BVS, now my most favorite anime. I had also hated Halo until I played 2 on a giant plasma screen. Infact so many of my favorite anime, games, and tv shows were like this, that I have now decided to try not to judge something on appearance as best I can.
#24076
On one hand, this troper is sick of people dismissing WoodyAllen because of the Soon-Yi Previn situation, especially when they demonstrate that they don't even understand the basics of what happened. On the other hand, some directors strike him as so egotistical and their films so painful (and not UweBoll painful; I mean actively-trying-to-annoy-and-hurt-the-audience painful) that he refuses to watch anything they make, no matter how much praise he hears about them.
#24077
Part of being a person who plays WorldOfWarcraft is putting up with people who rag on the game and its fans, while saying it's sooo overly addicting like crack and an abomination to mankind...but here's some fun. Ask most of these most vocal Anti-World of warcraft people if they've ever even sat down and played it. Post your results!
#24078
For me, 9 out of 10 people I asked have never even seen more than the box in game stores.
#24079
To this Troper, the only reason he doesn't like it is because of how much people proclaim it to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Yes, he's never played it, but it's more a money issue there: There are many playable [=RPGs=] out there that work just like Warcraft...but they're free.
#24080
How would you know that they work just like Warcraft if you've never played Warcraft?
#24081
With the ten day free trial, there really is no excuse to hate it without playing.
#24082
Really? Everyone I've ever met who was strong critic had at least one max level character.
#24083
This Troper bashes World of Warcraft for the fact that you have to keep doing the same thing over and over and over again. He's never played it personally.
#24084
You must not like any other video games then - literally every ExcusePlot FPS is just boring as hell. Do I get ''rewarded'' for doing the same thing over and over and ''over'' again? Oh, just gamer score? Well do I get to at least see some events? No? Do I get anything like a satisfying end? No? Boring.
#24085
I played WoW. It's alright, but I don't want to play it because with my amount of free time, I don't want to treat the game like another utility bill. Also, if it's anything I hate about WoW, it's the asinine behaviors of the players that insists throwing insults at people is a valid form of argument.
#24086
Alcohol. this troper does that with beer despite having never tasted most beer...because I've seen my friends and sister's boyfriend drink it. It looks and smells like someone had peed in the mug after eating asparagus. And i've tried alcohol and know hwo bad it tastes.
#24087
Alcohol's not actually a drink. Different ''alcoholic'' drinks taste differently. This is less rejecting one work and more rejecting an entire genre. This troper loves alcohol, but hates beer and wine.
#24088
Agreed with the above troper; I've pretty much never found an alcoholic product I like, but I wanted to learn more about beer, since the people associated with the craft beer scene seemed cool. So I started making beer, and have since tried a metric ass-load of beers, ranging from lagers to sours to stouts. I find that I still hate most of them, but I've found a few I do like. Saying you don't like beer because everyone around you is drinking (for example) Bud or Miller is like saying you don't like books because Twilight sucks.
#24089
This Troper had this with High School Musical for the longest time, simply hating it for it's popularity, bubblegum music (He has a younger brother, who is NOW 19, that listens to the soundtracks), and the general complaints. So just a few months ago, he watches the original movie, and...yeah, it still sucks, he still hates it, and I hate that Disney can't at least once try for something a bit less teenybopper (and now that he says this, he's ready to see people prove him wrong...)
#24090
''HighSchoolMusical'' was by Disney Channel Original Productions, which explains the focus on teens. Disney's recent movies without a teen focus include ''Hidalgo'' and ''Pirates of the Caribbean''. Also keep in mind that Disney owns both Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films, which routinely produce more adult movies.
#24091
This troper was a big fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! when he was younger. Now his brother is watching every episode on the internet. When I found out, I went "Oh my gosh, you nerd!" and then started watching it with him. Also happened with this troper discovering Series/DoctorWho and eventually getting my brother and mom to watch episodes.
#24092
My friend hates Linkin Park. When I asked him if he had heard a single song, he said no, then I introduced him to New Divide.
#24093
This troper hates the book Wicked and all its sequels based entirely on the first four pages.
#24095
Several descriptions of the fight scenes in DBZ have convinced this troper to never ever ever watch that show.
#24096
For a short peroid of time, this troper hated Total Drama Island based on the commericals. And this is the same troper who was mad at his friend for hating Linkin Park.
#24097
This troper dislikes the Inheritance series and, sadly, has not read them. I suppose this is wrong of me.
#24098
Before this troper eventually ended up liking her music, he remembers having a conversation with a Bjork fan and dismissing her as "too weird and creepy", based only upon the "It's Oh So Quiet" video. What strikes him as funny about it now is how that is nowhere near as weird as her music ''or'' videos get (and is a case of CoveredUp besides), and that this was well before more people knew her for the swan dress and having attacked a reporter than for her music.
#24099
The earliest example that this troper can think of truly infuriating him was a discussion some of his classmates were having in a study hall where they were making fun of "alternative" music, despite the fact that any references they made to the actual music were admittedly based entirely on 1) a commercial for the soundtrack to Baz Luhrman's ''Romeo + Juliet'', and 2) Anthrax's guest appearance on ''Married With Children''. Although, knowing what he was like at the time, if he'd butted in, his argument would have included a lot of making fun of rap, the music that they liked, which he knew only slightly more about.
#24100
This troper has seen idiots on the
Yahtzee pasture (aka Escapist) describe [=JRPGs=] with criticisms on stuff that's not even in the game. Such funny examples include:
#24101
"Kingdom Hearts is totally linear with the worlds you have to go to". HAHAHA. Yeah right. Did you know that the game only requires that one beats the first set of worlds, then after that, you're only required to beat Captain Hook in Neverland to progress to Hollow Bastion? And that it's actually recommended to sequence-break and beat Deep Jungle ''before'' the initial events at Olympus Coliseum, yet the game says you should do that last? It's just not ''recommended'' because you'll lack experience if you skip everything and go straight to Neverland.
#24102
"Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume" is all just one-character comboing at a time" and "The voice acting kills the dramatic scenes". HAHAHAHA. Do these people even bother to play it? The American localization doesn't even ''have'' voice acting during the non-battle scenes, and it's one character comboing at a time? Did they just skip the Tutorial where it tells you how to siege?!
#24103
"
Zidane is an Emo just like Cloud". I rolled on the floor laughing. Zidane is ''nothing'' like Cloud.
#24104
Zidane is, for the most part, the polar opposite of emo. What was this person smoking?
#24105
Zidane IS EMO! For about 5 minutes. After having his very soul literally broken. Did we mention that the game is about 40 hours long? Also, there's the AWESOME music that plays during said emo scene.
#24106
"DragonQuestVIII has no voice acting." (Did they only play the Japanese version?)
#24107
"Dist is just another effeminite villain with world domination and is working for the empire in TalesOfTheAbyss" That made me LOL, becuase that's just quoting an XPlay review that was full of Morgan jumping to conclusions. Dist is working for the empire? HA! Even if they actually played as far as Morgan likely did they'd have found out Dist has ''nothing'' to do with the Malkuth Empire and is working for ''The Order of Lorelei''.
#24108
"''Mother 3'' is just another "Attack-defend" type game. It'd be cool if they at least had combos." HAHAHAHAHA.
#24109
The Irony-O-Meter just went off the charts. Also, that's the one thing they have a problem with so much they won't even try the rest of it?
#24110
THIS. IS. THE ESCAPIST!!!. There are people on that forum who are ''so'' single-issue they refuse to play entire genres for it. (For example, I've seen someone who stated that ''
Oblivion'' was a piece of crap because it doesn't have guns.)
#24111
"Square-Enix didn't care when they made Legend of Dragoon". HAHAHAHAHA!!! They didn't even look at the game box!!!
#24112
This Troper has met someone who hates the 2003 TMNT show without having watched it, her only defense is that it isn't the old show.
#24113
And now he's met someone ''worse'', he dislikes most of CartoonNetwork's new shows, and goes more with the old (No, it's not NostalgiaFilter), he even had the gall to call '''friggin AstroBoy''' a bad anime at one point (never mind that was one of the things that ''jumpstarted Anime''), as well as hating GeneratorRex, once again, not having watched it, he got the premise wrong in several aspects, saying that Rex got his powers from ''the iron in his blood'', and says science doesn't work that way, but we corrected him saying it was NanoMachines, he still says it sucks without having watched it.
#24114
Most members of this troper's family complain about her love of anime claiming it is all stupid and melodramatic. Comepletely by accident she started removing their prjudices toward Japan and animation. Origionally she just really wanted to watch The Seven Samurai so she told them it was the Movie that The Magnificent Seven was based on (this worked because, like me, they like westerns) and then her mom ended up liking it, a lot. That was when she decided to put her plan in motion:
#24115
The first stage of my plan involved renting several Miyazaki movies and making offhand comments about how great such-and-such an anime was, it worked, I brought my younger sibling around, now I am in the second stage.
#24116
The second stage of the plan involved asking for the first season of Avatar (no it's not really anime, but it is does have Aisian animation and a plot that runs through all three seasons) for my birthday. My mom was like "Why do you want that stupid show?" but still bought it for me. Then I watched it while my siblings were around. This stage is going far better than I ever expected and My entire family is now addicted to Avatar and they are renting the other two seasons and enjoying them immensely, despite the fact that less than a month ago they bashed the show constantly.
#24117
The third stage of my plan will probably involve somehow getting discs of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and other teen oriented animes into my house and making my family addicted until they understand that anime is not a genre . . . maybe this belongs on the Xanatos Gambit troper tales page, but I think it fits here, as it is a Xanatos Gambit to stop Complaining About Shows You Don't Watch.
#24118
I recall hating both Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh as a child, before I ever watched/played them, most likely because I was sick of everyone talking about them. This changed very quickly after exposure to the franchises, and both of those (especially Pokemon) quickly became beloved parts of my childhood.
#24119
This Troper does this with ''Smallville''. Unashamedly.
#24120
This Troper considers all modern rock to be full of {{Wangst}} until proven otherwise.
#24122
I usually manage to avoid falling into this trope, but I have to say that it's an affront to TV viewers nationwide that sitcoms as painfully unfunny and poorly written as ''Accidentally On Purpose'' are permitted to exist. I fit the trope to a T because of my avoidance of anything Jenna Elfman-related, but broke down and watched a few episodes, and yes, it really ''is'' as bad as I assumed.
#24123
This Troper knows someone who hates everything Japanese. This Troper hates that person for other reasons, though
#24124
This troper did this when he first saw ads for ''KungPow: Enter The Fist''. He thought it looked like the stupidest movie ever, but then he watched it years later and loved every minute of it.
#24125
So I watched ''{{Firefly}}'' and fell completely in love with it, the kind where you feel like nothing can ever replace the object of your affections so why bother looking, right? Now JossWhedon, who I love to probably an unhealthy degree, comes out with this new show called ''{{Dollhouse}}'', and I'm a tad suspicious of it after reading the summary. An organization where they
wipe people's minds and
send them out for "engagements" of questionable natures? And who knows
how long it'll last on Fox anyway? Combined with being in the middle of ''TheSarahConnorChronicles'' (for perfectly
legitimate reasons) and hearing that ''Dollhouse'' was spared while the former was scrapped, this did not endear it to me further. I'll even admit that I didn't feel terribly sympathetic when the news broke that ''Dollhouse'' was canceled - by my cold-hearted reasoning, the fans were getting a planned resolution so they didn't have any reason to whine like I (a ''{{Firefly}}'' fan) did, right? ...Eating my words now. They're bitter, but not undeserved.
#24126
I once hated the films of StudioGhibli without even watching any of them. Then I took a chance and sw MyNeighborTotoro. Needles to say, I fell in love.
#24127
This troper is part of a design team for a fairly large PlayByPost RPG forum. We're in the process of releasing information on our battle system upgrade as teasers to the public. One of the new...we'll say character classes for simplicity's sake...is vaguely {{TimeMaster}}ish. Cue cries of people complaining that Time Travel in our game is stupid and broken, despite the class ''nowhere'' containing abilities that allow time travel or even hinting that they are able to do so. (It's more of a 'can undo/delay very limited effects from the last x (where x is a very small number) seconds.) He's gotten understandably tired of people complaining about time travel-based powers when they clearly haven't even read the damn class.
#24128
@/{{Kaywinnet}}'s ''English teacher'' considered JossWhedon to be an overrated hack. When she finally asked what he'd seen and disliked so much, it turns out he'd never seen any of them. *headdesk*
#24129
Considering how many people regard Whedon as their Personal Lord and Savior, it's essentially axiomatic he's overrated. You would, however, have to watch his work to say he's a hack—this troper says so, with a confidence born of watching all of Firefly and Serenity. Let's just say there's so much
heavy-handed, simplistic WriterOnBoard as to affect the ship's
delta-V.
#24130
Half this, half HypeAversion: This Troper has never seen TheDarkKnight, but she detests it with a passion for no reason other than the fact that it was such a big deal. That, and she didn't like Heath Ledger, so all the fanboys having breakdowns over his death and lauding him the best joker EVAR just got on her nerves in a bad way. She plans to see it...sometime. When she does she hopes that it will not be painful for her to watch.
#24131
This Troper never got around to watching District9 because the theme (Apartheid in South Africa replaced with FantasticRacism) had been spoiled for him. Then Dad recommended it, and I was skeptical. Then he said Mom loved it, and given my mother's excellent taste in motion pictures, I watched it. Apart from some squicky BodyHorror stuff early on (
Fingernails!!!) and a character who kept backsliding towards selfishness, it was a solidly written story, IMO.
#24132
I think it isn't exactly a bad thing to hate things you've never experienced. After all, many black people are pretty hateful over slavery even though virtually none alive now have experienced it. I actually read Twilight, and didn't really hate it until I was pointed to all of the blatant propaganda and terrible writing. I however refuse to see Avatar based on the shitty story.
#24133
Yes. Disliking a movie without ever watching them is exactly like being against human slavery. Oh and 'virtually none alive now have experienced it'? Some people are still experiencing human slavery, genius. You do know it's valid to believe that the rest of the world outside America exists even if you haven't seen it, right?
#24134
This troper and ''Literature/{{Twilight}}''. At first, I heard about the premise, and I thought "Oh, that doesn't really interest me, I'll just have to pass on that." Then I heard that it royally sucked from people who read it and thought "Oh, I'm glad I'm not reading that." And then I read
Wiki}} this very wiki's article on Twilight.
#24135
This troper wants to watch the Edge of Love, she really does. It has Cillian Murphy and she hates complaining about films she hasn't seen. But every summary she has ever read of it anywhere makes her want to vomit and throw things. In her opinion, Cillian Murphy's character sounds like a big Woobie, and his love rival sounds like an asshole, and Keira Knightley's character sounds like an idiot for not dumping the asshole as soon as Cillian Murphy enters the film. It doesn't help that
Cillian Murphy is insanely gorgeous and the actor playing his love rival is
not that appealing to me, so even a totally shallow bitch should still go for Murphy's character.
#24136
This troper sometimes has a bit of it (though he tries to get informed on the subjects instead of fully-blind bashing), sometimes crossed with HypeAversion. Straighter examples come from other people: the sister of his best friend convinced her brother and two cousins not to watch Transformers, calling it a bad movie... ''when she hadn't even watched it'' (only two years later the trio saw it, through the troper's interference, and liked it). A classmate of his bashed the Prince Of Persia movie before it debuted, and after it came out, disagreed on the troper ''and a newspaper'' liking the movie without even seeing it. And a milder example - Complaining About Shows You Didn't Finish Watching - happened with this troper's parents, with both Slumdog Millionaire (both quit after 40 minutes -
a boy getting his eyes burned]] - even though the cruelty is reduced from that point on) and District 9 (his father only saw 20 minutes before giving up, his mother didn't even risk) - the latter, even led to this exchange when the father was complaining on the movie, the troper saying it wasn't that bad: #QUOTE#Mother: He [The troper] just saw it with different eyes.\\ Troper: I just saw the movie ''entirely''!
#24137
This troper borrowed ''GuitarHero: {{Metallica}}'' from a friend. His dad won't let him play it because he "doesn't like what they support/they are evil". When this troper asked him what they supported, he said "I don't know".
#24139
What, no mention of Fox News? About 90% of the internet bitches about it. It seems to be one of this site's favorite punching bags. And if I actually had any money, I would bet most of it's critics never watched more than two minutes.
#24141
Most people don't get that most of the examples they use aren't actually called "news". Glenn Beck may be a literal version of the WMG guy, but he's the TV version of a blogger.
#24142
Yeah, the problem is that, because they don't watch Fox News, they only see clips on either other programs like ''The Daily Show'' or the net that
show the prime-time pundits like O'Reily, Hannity, or Beck. Nevermind that CNN and MSNBC ''also'' use prime-time for opinion-based shows that ''talk'' about the news and don't report it, Fox News is the only guilty culprit and it's bias is far worse than any other biases because it's
RIGHT-WING BIAS!
#24143
It's worse than other biases because the network's slogan implies it doesn't exist at all. When you claim that your station is "fair and balanced" any bias that can be found will be treated as 10x worse then it is because people feel that you're lying; if you're a news organization and people feel you're lying then they don't feel you can be trusted as a news source...
#24144
Also, it goes the other way too. Some right-wing folk that watch Fox News, and other similar stations, don't watch any other news sources for examples of the Left-wing bias they claim things like Fox counter.
#24145
This troper doesn't watch Fox news because he a) is rarely ''on'' that channel in the first place and b) Doesn't really like their commentary. Not to mention, there is the whole stuff like the
Mass Effect and Call of Duty incident that doesn't really give this troper a whole lot of reason to watch them. (However, I don't watch any video game journalism mostly due to the BiasSteamroller and encouraging of
king customer mentality.)
#24146
I only watch ''Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld'', but otherwise don't like FNC (and REALLY don't like Glenn Beck because he reminds me of the unholy offspring of the WMG guy and Chicken Little). Even with Red Eye I find myself sometimes disagreeing with them and dislike when they do overly political stories. My point is that you can watch it without instantly being an insane right-winger.
#24147
This Troper knows people who complain about certain shonen anime like Naruto and DBZ...because they agreed that '''they would never watch them.'''
#24148
This Troper's friend complains about Death Note as if it's the worst anime he's ever seen...even though he has only ever seen the second half of episode 19, and barely remembers it.
#24149
Averting this troper is the reason this troper read the first Twilight novel. She hasn't worked up the courage to read the rest, but keeps herself relatively informed about the events in the books so's she can complain accurately.
#24150
My cousin proclaimed that he would NEVER even LOOK at a college in southern US because "Its a bunch of rednecks down there and all they have is Agriculture." When my mother asked if he had even ever been to the south, he replied "Well, I've been to North Carolina." [Translation: The Outer Banks. As in tourist beaches.] This is was really bad thing to say in front of my family, too, because: 1. My mother grew up in the country and occasionally proclaims herself redneck. She also has a PhD in Chemistry. 2. My sister is currently at college in Texas majoring in Music and Business.
#24151
This troper has a friend who absolutely REFUSES to watch
The Princess and the Frog because it "ruined the Frog Princess." Never mind that I have explained to her on multiple occasions that it wasn't even based on that book in the first place, just the most basic premise of it INSPIRED the basic premise of PATF. To that, she replied
"No, it just got the idea from it and then made its own story." I told her that that was what inspired means.
#24152
I usually avoid this except for a few situations. One of these is anything by Tim & Eric. I've never watched a second of their shows, but judging from how stupid the commercials are I don't feel like I'm missing anything (if what's in the commercials are the best parts of the show I don't want to know what the worst stuff is like). Also, the fans act like they're smarter and more refined than you if you dare say the show isn't funny, which is the kind of obnoxiousness that drives me away. I also hate Twilight despite only going off what I've heard about it. I think being a heterosexual male might give you a pass, but if not I'm willing to watch one of the movies so I can legitimately hate it.
#24153
Played straight with my sister. She, two of my friends friend and I, all dislike the series Twilight. Not uncommon. Except out of the four of us, only I read the series, and watched one of the movies. Whenever my sister starts parroting the Anti-fans, I usually tell her she has the right to say that she doesn't like what she's heard about Twilight, and that she tried to read the books but found them boring. Because that's what happened. Thankfully averted, in the fact that the other two are just opposed to the ideas the series has created in pop culture, and simply says this.
#24154
This troper admits to doing this when it comes to 3D movies. The massive success of Avatar has led to the belief that 3D is used as an excuse to put less effort into writing and acting. From what I've heard about Avatar and the Clash of the Titans remake, this seems to currently be true.
#24155
Unfortunately it's true - for awhile, the main page for ClicheStorm said that Avatar only made money because it was the most beautiful movie they had ever seen, and not to bother with the DVD release because they'd have all the visuals watered down and be left with the cliches". You just ''know'' that if Avatar didn't have such a huge visual budget, it'd have been dismissed as a movie with a recycled storyline. Gimme a reason to see the 3D version over the 2D version. My uncle also has a justifiable reason to avoid 3D movies - because he has only one eye, so when he tries to see a 3D movie, all he sees is just a darker version of the 2D film, or a really really blurry mish-mash of colours.
#24156
Earlier on, I decided I'd never buy any of Microsoft's video game console series because all the ads I'd seen were for shooting games, which is a genre I don't like. Then I tried Fable, looked at Bioshock (while admitting that it was a shooting game with customizable weapons and special attacks) and saw the vehicular Banjo-Kazooie game for Xbox 360. Now the only reason I'm not buying a Microsoft platform is expense.
#24157
My friend once proclaimed that all anime is stupid even though 1. anime is a medium and therefore that statement is like proclaiming all movies retarded and 2. she has never seen one single anime in her LIFE!
#24158
My friend once said that Kingdom Hearts is "really dumb" despite having never played it and knowing nothing more about it other than that it has both Disney and Final Fantasy characters.
#24159
This troper's sister has decided that all metal music is "complete shit" and once told this troper that she was a freak for listening to it and refusing to let her play any of it. As you may have guessed this troper's sister has never heard a metal song.
#24161
Follow-Up Tale: Once ''Tangled'' actually came out, some people at the TGWTG forum told this troper that ''none'' of that complaint actually applies to the movie, (Rapunzel's pretty good at defending herself, for one thing) making it HilariousInHindsight.
#24162
@/{{Comartemis}}: I never really ''complained' about it per say but for a while I wrote off ''{{Bleach}}'' as being outside my area of interest despite not knowing anything about it besides the title.
#24163
This Troper was attempting to explain Kirby to a friend when they dismissed it as "Mario but crappy". Another friend, who has never played a Zelda game in his life, described it as "Pokémon with people". The mind boggles.
#24164
This Troper knew the film adaptation of TheLastAirbender would be doomed from the word go. Let's see...well for starters, MNightShyamalan is the director, that's Strike 1. It's a LiveActionAdaptation, and as we all know, those have rarely worked, that's Strike 2. And most of the Asian characters from the cartoon (I think) are portrayed by caucasians, that's Strike 3. And yet, everybody was looking forward to it. Have you learned NOTHING from DragonBallEvolution??
#24165
This Troper hates the St. Anger album by Metallica, despite only having heard 2 songs on it before.
#24166
This Troper hated ''{{Glee}}'' and ''RealGenius'' before her parents made her watch them. Now, they're favorites, and said parents will not let it go.
#24167
This tropette hates a show by proxy. Just this one dude in my class will not shut up about it. To my credit I have endured approx' 20 minutes of it. I know what I'm hating. I am hating a show I don't watch though. Technically. The show "Hey Hey It's Saturday" The most horrible comedy variety show in the history of the world. As I said before if this guy didn't talk about it as much I would feel nothing for the show or slight dislike. Not flaming violent hatred towards a show I don't even have to know off *Except for that guy who won't shut up about it* . Curse you HHIS, Curse you!!!
#24168
This tropes had occasionally called Twilight shit for a while before watching the movie, so I decided to to see how bad it was. I unfortunately can't say much because of how boring it was.
#24169
My nephew decided that he hated a particular food because his older brother and sister hated it even though he never tried it. I talked him into just taking one bite, and he discovered he really likes it. Now he can't get enough of it.
#24170
I've seen lots of people online express dislike of LadyGaga because she does pop music, not because of the quality of her music.
#24171
To be fair, a lot of us hate her beause of her shitty music and attention whore personality.
#24172
After this troper became obsessed with Axis Power Hetalia She tried to get her best friend to watch it, but she absolutly refused. For a couple of weeks I tried every thing to convince her to watch it but she still said no saying she knew she wouldn't like it. (I assume this was because she thought it was a yaoi.)Cut to a few weeks later where I finaly annoyed her so much she gave in and watched it. She loved it and it acctualy made her (kinda)like yaoi. She still won't watch Code Geass though.
#24174
Aime is a ''big'' target of this. I've seen people say that Anime eventually devolves into Godmodding because they think it's just a genre like ''DragonBall''. I asked where all the godmodding in ''Cyborg009'' and ''FruitsBasket'' were, because in all the episodes I had seen of ''Cyborg009'' and the 7 of ''FruitsBasket'', I didn't see any "Godmodding".
#24175
Tropers/{{Excel-2010}}. Thanks to
my Christian upbringing and
TV Tropes, I have
Complaining About Shows I Don't Watch, or as I call it to normal people, "
media discrimination", down to a science. My usual process for this involves overhearing about something popular at the wrong place and time and gauging how popular it is versus how much hatred it attracts. I then weigh this ratio against how much it interests me in the first place, and if the numbers don't look favorable, I use them to decide how much I will hate it. I don't stop there, though; I have a finely tuned process for determining what about it I don't like while still avoiding ever seeing a second of it. I don't just repeat points against something I choose to never like. I actually
do my research and present my points as if to suggest I had seen it and hated it. The mistake of most rookie haters is to pretend they've seen it simply by
copy-pasting popular arguments, which are
usually if not always wrong. I add to them my own flavor based on similar shows and personal experiences and make them my own. My pattern has worked for so long that I have concluded that
I no longer have to watch anything. Now I can just hear about a show I'm not interested in, think it's bad based on its popularity, read a few good and bad reviews and as many spoilers as I'll think I'll need to convince people that I've seen it, and no one will be the wiser.
My argument for why I should never watch ''GurrenLagann'' is the best exhibit I have at present, but I feel I could do a lot better these days. However,
I don't buy into the hate for like LadyGaga, JustinBieber, the JonasBrothers, ''Literature/{{Twilight}}'', KanyeWest, ''[=~K-ON!~=]'', ''{{Naruto}}'', {{MTV}} programming, UweBoll, [[AcceptablePoliticalTargets any political entity, and other people and shows with clearly divided bases]] everything listed in PeripheryHatedom. Saying anything about things that are already popularly hated is like throwing a match into a wildfire. It just doesn't feel like I'm contributing and I'm only wasting my time. I feel like a tool making jokes at the expense of these shows since every joke I can think of has been done by the likes of ''SaturdayNightLive'' and ''MADMagazine'' by the time I think of it.
I only go after shows with many more true fans than haters, simply because I feel alive when I rail against it as the VocalMinority (
hopefully as the only person in it).
It's much more engaging starting my own fires and
coming ever closer to the reason as to why I can't enjoy anything good anymore.
#24177
In other words, you're a arrogant jackass {{Troll}} who relishes in hating popular things.
#24178
^ This. This sounds like a really stupid way to spend time and I don't understand why you're bragging about it...
#24179
I've got a friend who hates anime but has clearly never watched through a whole show
#24180
This troper sees a lot of this in online discussions about rap. So often, people criticizing it, or even so much as claiming that it just isn't music, will seem to have such a stereotypical view of it that it suggests they don't listen to much of it. Understandable, of course, that those who don't like it won't listen to much, but it kind of becomes a catch-22 when this is part of the reason they perceive it the way they do in the first place.
#24181
I think that most people who hate rap haven't heard the right kinds. The ones that emphasized the music over lyrics, unlike most of what comes out today, are very listenable.
#24183
Around Platinum? They were doing this since before ''Emerald''.
#24184
For some reason, I get a little annoyed when I see {{Discworld}} entries. I tried to read two of them, and thought they were "meh" (''Thief of Time'' and ''The Colour of Magic'', if it matters), but I don't know why I don't like seeing them. Maybe it's because ''Discworld'' is supposed to be a humor series, and I didn't find them very funny. It's not because the humor is "too British" and I'm American - I found ''The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'' hilarious. As an experiment, I compared the length of ''Discworld'''s CrowningMomentOfFunny page to that of ''TheDresdenFiles'' - and, despite ''Dresden Files'' having less than half as many books, they're almost the same length. Which means that a dark DeconstructorFleet of fantasy is, relatively speaking, more than twice as funny as a humor series. I then compared the ''Discworld'' page to the CrowningMomentOfFunny page of ''MassEffect'', which has only two games. Now, ''Discworld'' (again) is a humor series and ''Mass Effect'' is a LovecraftLite SpaceOpera bordering on CosmicHorrorStory. Proportionally, the ''Mass Effect'' series is ''thirty-six'' times funnier. Did I put too much work in attempting to justify my not-reading dislike?
#24185
But.....Discworld ''isn't'' a humour series. It's a series with humour, a very different thing. Maybe you just don't like the style, a perfectly valid reason.
#24186
Then why is the laconic entry for Discworld "the funniest fantasy you will ever read"? Cause it's ''
not''. Even if it's not, I still didn't like the style - it rambled.
#24187
It's British humour, by a British author, most of it written more than fifteen years ago and referencing pop culture that was contemporary at the time of writing. You just need a more subtle sense of 'funny' to appreciate the Discworld's sense of humour. If you laugh at Wil E. Coyote you probably don't get Esme Weatherwax.
#24188
Another Escapist example. Someone complained about how ''KingdomHeartsBirthBySleep'' was "too short" and that it "would have been cool if Aqua and Ven's campaigns were different in ways other than playstyle". Anyone who has played that game...or even ''seen'' footage of it on YouTube can tell you that this guy either '''a)''' saw footage from ''one'' campaign and decided the ''entire'' game was like that or '''b)''' ''did'' play it but turned it off about a third of the way through. (ie, Terra's campaign) Surprisingly, the next three posts were, in order, two people who told him to actually ''try'' Ventus and Aqua's campaign since they actually ''are'' different (Surprising given the nature of The Escapist Forums) and a third who, despite those two posts, ''agreed'' with the idiot.
#24189
this troper hates Negima but it is mostly due to depression if anything. I read a few chapters and volumes but he doesn't believe it deserves that high of a pedestal as it has on the wiki.
#24190
This troper used to feel this way about FanboyandChumChum. Now she doesn't really care.
#24191
This troper's family and CCD. For starters, if you don't know what CCD is, it's basically religious studies for people who don't go to a catholic school. (Because public schools aren't allowed to teach you heavily biased religion; and for a very good reason.) His sister had to only go for ''six years'' to be confirmed, whereas this troper had to go for nearly ''twelve'' thanks to the church changing their requirements and having to start in Kindergarten vs. his sister starting in second grade. So anyways, because I was going by the time I was able to form an opinion of my own, they were telling us all sorts of crazy stuff, like saying
Mormons are all polygamists who worship meteors, Hinduism is "Eastern Mythology" this is essentially saying "Their religion is false.",
Jewish people are a corrupt deviation of the Catholic Church and money-hoarders who don't donate to charity, Muslims are all a cult of satanists who believe they'll be given virgins if they kill Catholics,
Republicans are all insane protestants and Democrats are Atheists, trashing ''TheGoldenCompass'' and listing stuff that doesn't even happen in the series...I can go on but that's just Complaining about religions I don't like. But anyways, my family. I was telling my family ''all the time'' that I wanted out and it was just brainwashing, whereas I was told, "They're not saying that" and "You just want to be spoiled! You'd just play ''WorldOfWarcraft'' or whatever if you didn't have to go!" (Yeah right; I'd be going to Karate instead because it was ''at the exact same time as the Karate class I go to''.) I told mom and dad that they encourage it when families come, and told my sister that she could come too. Guess what their responses were? My sister ''refused'' to come or made up some bullshit excuse as to why. Dad came once, and then left halfway because he was so bored, so afterwords he would just drop me off and then ''LEAVE''. Mom only came twice and said they were saying some rather questionable stuff, yet refused to believe me at all. Even after the recent stuff where the ultra-religious neighbours left the church halfway through mass in disgust at a disgustingly anti-Muslim Sermon, they think I made it all up. So I'm lying, then why on earth didn't you come and ''prove'' that I'm lying?
#24192
...What the hell kind of people were in charge of your CCD program? Mine was nothing like that.
#24193
Ditto, I went to CCD and all we did was read little kid versions of bible stories and watch videos on "making good desicions".in fact we actualy learned a lot about Judaisim so we could understand bible.
#24194
I don't remember very much of my CCD, but I'm pretty sure they didn't do any of that. Then again, I stopped going after communion, so they might've done it after that.
#24195
This troper's brother refuses to watch JacobTwoTwo, for whatever reason. When I asked him why, he said "It's stupid." Naturally, he hadn't watched a single episode. I tried to tell him that he has to watch an episode of it before he has the right to say it's stupid. He said, "No. It's stupid." (He probably just doesn't like the animation.)
#24196
This Troper as well as many within the {{Yu-gi-oh}} fandom are guilty of this particuarly with the Yu-gi-ohGX. Some of the complaints this troper used to hear for GX went from "They ruined Yugi's character" to "They ruined Jounochi's character" as well as other complaints of RuinedForever, and I genuinely believed it and used it as a reason for not watching the sequel. When I finally did get around to watching GX it was in the middle of the second season, and to my surprise Yugi wasn't around as were none of the original characters from the original Yu-gi-oh series. After that I got curious and started to watch the entire from the start only to find that Yugi only appears in about 4 episodes (the first episode, and the last episodes)
with only the last one featuring Yugi's other personality due to time travel. That as well as other complaints couldn't be farther from the the truth with. Now its actually funny to read the posts of those who have never seen either sequels of the Yu-gi-oh franchise and yet complain about the events (which either never happened, or they only have half the story and so are confused by the events) its even funnier to watch to watch them be corrected and then called out on it.
#24197
This troper first heard of Harry Potter when the German translation of the Goblet of Fire was released (when I was nine). It was being hyped SO much I absolutely hated even hearing the name. Then my mother actually bought the first book. After the obligatory rant on how stupid she was for buying such an awful book (remember, nine years old), it captivated me enough to actually better my school work; I would be more motivated to finish my homework, because only afterwards I was allowed to read.
#24198
This troper hates everything, but has yet to see/read/be everything. So far it's working quite well.
#24199
So how are you on this site?
#24200
I'm guilty of this with Taylor Swift and Twilight. I've never read or seen the latter and have only heard enough of the former to know that she can't sing to save her life, but I hate the hell out of them because they're constantly being shoved at me everywhere I go. The only way to avoid them is to live in a bunker with no access to any kind of media.
#24201
To be perfectly honest, before I ever got into anime and manga, I thought it was probably stupid because, literally, I was kind of hating on someone who my friends hated. This person was into anime and manga of course. Then, one day while I was at the library, I decided to read Fruits Basket. Ever since I've liked anime and manga very much. And actually, before I KNEW they were both anime, I LOVED Pokemon and Digimon.
#24202
This Troper refuses to watch
Zero No Tsukaima. The reason? One of her best friends (who This Troper has a crush on) and his girlfriend identify with
Saito and
Louise. When said friend found out that This Troper had (and still has) a crush on him, he thought the
great idea of This Troper being
Siesta. Since then, This Troper hates
Zero No Tsukaima. And This Troper has watched only 1 episode of it.
#24203
That's a terrifyingly understandable example of this trope. Nobody but the die-hard fans of the show can fault you for it.
#24204
This troper absolutely despises the Final Destination movies, yet hasn't watched more than a trailer for any of them.
#24205
When this troper was riding on the {{Pokemon}} fame height he heard one of his friends talking about a show called {{Digimon}} and despised it immediately because he thought it was only a cheap rip-off... until he saw it. Cut to some weeks later when this troper himself was explaining to his mom how the shows weren't similar.
#24206
Once ''FishHooks'' previews first hit the DisneyChannel airwaves, I immediately went on the TV Tropes forums and made quite a few bile-filled posts about the coming show, declaring it to be an obvious attempt to cash in on the popularity of ''[=~SpongeBob SquarePants~=]'', a hideously terrible GagSeries, a piss-poor "replacement" for ''PhineasAndFerb''... I even went so far as to paraphrase RogerEbert's infamous review of ''{{North}}''. Turns out I had been TaintedByThePreview - when the show actually started airing, I gave it a chance, and while it was nothing great it still had its funny moments. While the [=SpongeBob=] similarities are
definitely present and it ''is'' a GagSeries (though really now, it's a show about talking fish - what else could it be?), the advertisements had made the show look much dumber than it really was.
#24207
This troper's friend is complaining about stuff that airlines supposedly do (As well as the TSA) without having ever set foot into an airport in years. It's all based off of heavily biased articles that come from StrawmanPolitical sources and other stuff like parodies and is flat out AccentuateTheNegative. Yeah, hard to argue about some stuff like X-rays. (There is a national opt-out day) but has claimed they cavity searched ''everybody''. The fact that me, my mom, another friend, his family of about six people, the rest of my family, and mom's coworkers (Many of which are Indian or have similar names to people who were actually convicted of crimes in India) have ''never'' been cavity searched should pretty much prove that wrong. Also, if he is complaining about every bit of luggage being searched? He'll die if he moves to Holland then - they search ''everybody'''s luggage, even if your name is Mohammed Bin Laden or as dutch as Jan Peter Balkende.
#24208
Every time I come across someone who has never played a BulletHell shooter, but refuses to play them because their initial exposure to the genre was through {{Cave}} {{True Final Boss}}es or ''{{Touhou}}'' on Lunatic, I die a little on the inside.
#24209
This troper's friend's recently started playing Magic: The Gathering I started ripping on it, and poking fun at them. After a while they asked why i didn't like it, my sole reasoning was i watched someone play it in grade 8, and someone else nearly decked me because i put a cold can of coke next to one of his unsleeved cards, after that they forced a deck into my hands and made me play with them. weekend after that, i used what money i had left to buy my own premade deck (was unemployed at the time)
#24210
This troper really, really hates AVeryPotterMusical, but I feel justified because my sister wouldn't STOP SINGING THE SONGS. THEY DON'T STOP. '''THEY NEVER STOP!!'''
#24211
This troper is currently a bit of a sucker for practically anything starring IronMan, from both of the RobertDowneyJr
movies, to ''AvengersEarthsMightiestHeroes'', to ''RobotChicken'' sketches starring MarkHamill. However, I do not plan to watch ''IronManArmoredAdventures''. The thought of reducing the Armored Avenger to adolescence never sounded appealing to me.
#24212
This Troper complained a lot about the product placement in the new KnightRider series, thought that it wasn't as good as the original and didn't like at all the new
KITT. When I watched a couple episodes, I found out that I was actually right, since they threw out of the window all things that worked in the 1982 series and did a quite bad Transformers / TheFastAndTheFurious mashup. The only way to enjoy it is to ''forget what the original KnightRider was''
#24213
This Troper is absolutely certain that she will never, ever visit Encyclopedia Dramatica and/or 4Chan after reading so much about them on TVTropes. And she is a SchmuckBait magnet.
#24214
This Troper doesn't go to 4chan because he already has a (brief, and admitidly harmless) mention on ED, and doesn't want to risk being made Anon's bitch.
#24215
Tropes Are Not Bad. I never thought I would say that about this, but Tropes Are Not Bad. For the record, merely browsing 4chan may be enough to convict you of several crimes. No, I am not joking.
#24216
Due to the nature of 4chan, you can play this trope straight and get a free pass.
#24217
I'm assuming you guys saw the /b/tards only? I mostly go there for /v/'s SMT boards.
#24218
Well, least we only have to worry about one of those things anymore.
#24219
"
Marvel/DC versions of Apple commercials? Sounds pretty dull." Years pass..."Well, I guess I'll watch some starring IronMan and {{Batman}} (does so) That's actually funny. Whoa, {{Deadpool}} meets ''{{Watchmen}}'' characters? Can't miss that either!" Now I'm hooked.
#24220
This tropette lives in the Bible-Beltiest part of the Bible Belt. Don't even bring up
His Dark Materials or Philip Pullman. Or you will get the atheism-is-evil rant. I have heard ''elementary school students'' telling their friends not to read the series because, and I quote, "They kill God at the end." That... doesn't happen. Ever.
#24221
This tropette does not exactly HATE the anime/sound novels/manga, but since the beginning tended to dislike UminekoNoNakuKoroNi, since she is a big fan of
its predecessor and hurts a little on the inside hearing that Higurashi is becoming so overshadowed by 'OMG WITCHES EVERYWHERE'.
#24222
All but two of this troper's friends despise Neon Genesis Evangelion with a passion. Have they watched it? No more than 2 episodes. Why? Because "It's too weird and dark" or "It makes no sense" or "It's too angsty" or "The Coma scene".
#24223
This troper finds that a lot of "professional reviews" fit this trope. He always noticed that when it's a third-party magazine or review site, (like the
Idiot Gamers Network or Game Misinformer) the amount of advertising is directly proportional to the detail of the review. Or, in the case of first party magazines, PC gamer, and XPlay, an ''extreme'' BiasSteamroller. I've not only seen hypocritical and inconsistent praises (ie, praising ''Morrowind'' and ''DragonAge'' for having in-game literature only to turn around and trash ''FinalFantasyXIII'' for doing the exact same thing) but occasions where reviews contradict stuff in the game, or even worse, when the review contradicts ''itself''.
Adamn Cesspool and Morgan Manjaw of ''XPlay'' fame even ''admit'' they don't personally play every game, and several times they've had their own research failures. (''DeadRising: Chop till you drop'' and ''TalesOfTheAbyss''.) Not that improfessional reviews haven't been
free from other things.
#24224
Oooooohhh. I grew to hate so many magazines and ''XPlay'' especially because of that kind of bias. It was a good show once, I swear. But G4 started to go down the tubes in 2005. There was no going back. I have never hated a show's SeasonalRot more than this one's. The last time time I watched it, which will be the last time I ever watch it, was to see a review of ''BioShock'', which, being an FPS, was not subjected to the BiasSteamroller. (It also helped that it was a good game.) Besides that, isn't picking on the hosts' gender identity CompletelyMissingThePoint and a little fragrant of UnfortunateImplications, though?
#24225
This troper and alcohol. I've tried beer once, and wine once, and cider a few times, and will never consume alcoholic products again. I don't care that it's socially acceptable to poison yourself to lower your intellect for recreational reasons, I don't want to partake in it.
#24226
This troper hates the Left4Dead series, despite never playing either game in its series. It's because it's a SurvivalHorror game, a genre that I admit I suck at. The main reason why I don't like it is that FriendlyFire leading to {{unwinnable}} situations thanks to ArtificialStupidity. (although it's disabled on Easy mode) It may be a good game, but it's one I would pass up to save the frustration from playing it.
#24227
My stepsisters refuse to watch StarWars. They say it's boring, even though they've NEVER SEEN IT.
#24229
I have a friend, let's call him J. He refuses to watch the upcoming Hobbit film because he says all prequels are rubbish and that it won't help the story of the Lord of the Rings whatsoever. Upon being asked if he had any knowledge on the plot of the Hobbit, he simply replied "No."
#24230
This troper is eternally frustrated by how few people read American comics. I can't count the sheer number of people who claim to not like Superman, because "he's too boring", yet have never read a single comic in their entire lives. It overlaps with
Shows you don't Watch in that these same people will claim to like a character but whose knowledge consists of movies or a t-shirt.
#24231
This troper does not, and will not watch WesternAnimation/AdventureTime. It doesn't look funny. It looks stupid.
#24232
Shockingly, it's actually pretty funny.
#24233
This Tropette has a subversion: Most Twi-hards assume that because I hate Literature/{{Twilight}}, I've never read it. I enjoy shocking them when I tell them that, yes, I have read the first two books and ('''GASP!''') hate it.
#24234
This troper when they went to the movies saw an ad for Generator Rex and immediatlly proclaimed for a month that they would not watch a show made by the creators of ben 10, now she watchs 2 episodes back to back just for the Theme Music
#24235
This Troper has two examples, the first was that I hated FPSes since Microsoft joined the console wars trio, I still think war FPSes are overdone, but after playing bioshock, I've gotten a bit lax, and am willing to try more, as long as they keep fantasy elements.
#24236
The second is, of course, the fan favorite twilight, at the beckoning of a now-ex, I grudgingly went with her, having heard the rumors, when the movie ended, my response was, "Well, at least now I know what I'm saying when I say it's terrible."
#24237
This troper's cousin has never played a FinalFantasy game in his life, yet he adheres to the typical "All FF games are about {{BFS}} Wielding {{Bishonen}}" mindset. The best part? He's only seen me playing CrisisCore ONCE.
#24238
I wonder how many people fall into this category when it comes to politicians and political commentators.
#24239
After spending two years watching an old friend of mine go from JerkWithAHeartOfGold to being just plain JerkAss, it was his implementation of this trope that finally made me give up on him. Reason being, I am a
Gleek, and he knows this very well. And yet every time I mention it, he goes on a rant about how it's "soulless corporate bullshit" and that it's "ruining the music industry". And it's also, apparently, "just like HighSchoolMusical". While he's saying all this, I'm calmly defending why I like the show (the covers aren't better than the originals, but they're still really good, and I love the plot and characters to death)...only for him to, effectively, ignore me and carry on about how shit he thinks it is. I asked him, "Have you seen any episodes?" His reply? "Enough for me to make a judgement" (in other words, about five minutes). What's even funnier about him going on about how it's exactly like High School Musical is that ''he's never watched High School Musical either.'' But I twigged that, since he doesn't care enough about my opinion to stop bashing something I love, then fuck him.
#24240
Exact same issue with this troper, but change Glee for BritneySpears and you get this punk-ass jerk I used to ALMOST consider a friend. He can't even tell me WHY he dislikes her. It just to wind me up. Haters gonna hate. I survived 08 and 07. Some random punk with ego problems and a need to piss me off ain't gunna phase me.
#24241
This troper read a ''terrible'' review of ''FinalFantasyXIII'' that fit this trope. For starters the dude had a ''huge'' BiasSteamroller and it was obvious they did almost ''no'' research. Not only did they do shit like say it was Tetsuya Nomura's new shit when his input was actually limited to designing the characters, but they obviously didn't even get through the first chapter. The review stated that the game was full of unskippable and lenghty cutscenes and tutorials. Yes they have lengthy cutscenes, but apparently the revier didn't know you could hit start and then select or back to ''skip them''. And as for the tutorials, yes the game has them, and yes it interrupts you to ask if you'd like to undergo them...but ''right before they start'', you're given the option of ''skipping them''. Unskippable cutscenes? The review also said the entire game was easy because the first two battles were easy as shit - Really. You're judging a game whether or not it's easy or hard ''based upon the first couple battles''? They state that you only get three ATB-gauges in the game and that it was a ripoff of SepterraCore; and that Fang was the designated Healer and support character. The review was just too painful to read...I had to wonder whether or not they just watched footage of demos on YouTube and judged the game from that.
#24242
This troper used to feel this way towards MyChemicalRomance and then they released Na Na Na and now I will give em a chance.
#24243
Now I own Danger Days and listen to it in full frequently.
#24244
This troper subverts this trope with Twilight. Or maybe it is defying it? Just to be able to know what I'm complaining about I have taken upon me to see the movies and read the books.
#24245
I think I also subvert in a different way since I complain about the books, but I usually complain about the vampires and werewolves and how their not really vampires or werewolves. Also my friend did the exact same thing highlighting the book while she did so. Yellow = description of yellow. I saw half a page of yellow.
#24246
* This troper has had many debates with people online who dismiss ''AmericanDad'' as a ''FamilyGuy'' clone, simply because of the similar family structure (father, mother, daughter, son, talking pet). Then when they actually sit down and watch the show and realize how character and plot driven AD is compared to FG...
#24247
This Troper has a friend who despises
Albert Wesker just because of people who play with him online on MvC3
#24248
This Troper shunned
Death Note because he just didn't see the appeal of a ''"Teenager who's last name is '' '''I'm a gay''' ''Spelled backwards gaining the power to kill people via a magic notebook''". Eventually he decided to see what all the fuss was about and picked up the first OVA (Big Mistake as it spoiled the entire first half of the anime), He liked it and eventually picked up the Complete Series Boxset and is now a fan and frequent L Cosplayer, Although he is a bit wary of rewatching it since it appears to be
cursed. The first time he sat down and watched it, 7 Minutes into Episode 2, His Laptop ''exploded''. It met the shelf for a few weeks before I picked it up again, the ''second'' Episode 3 began, car crash ''litteritly'' just outside my window. He finished the series nevertheless.
#24249
(Same Troper as above) I Also shunned
Naruto for several ''years'' because ''everyone else said it sucked'', This troper soon jumped on the "Believe It!" & "Ninja's '''don't''' wear orange!" Hate wagons...that was, until he developed a little thing called...
an opinion and started thinking for himself.
#24250
A friend of mine once told me all things with puppets were for children, even stuff like Mongrels and Avenue Q, despite the fact he's never watched these shows in his life.
#24251
This troper has heard of a lot of complaints that "PokemonBlackAndWhite" is just "Another find the professor" and "Defeat those guys". For starters, when do you have to ''find'' the professor? She friggin acts as Ms. Plot Exposition...you never have to ''find'' her! And "Defeat those guys" is a ''very'' broad term...if that's a reason the game is bad, then I guess it's safe to say they hate every game on the market that's not sports, puzzle, or adventure - since almost ''ALL'' of those plots are "Defeat those guys".
#24252
I'd take sports off that list since your goal is still to "defeat those guys". In fact, if you think about it, "defeat those guys" is basically the point of almost all media. So, basically, they like to watch paint dry.
#24253
This troper admitedly did this about --Avatar--, because his friends would not stop gushing about, and how it brought ManlyTears apparently. I still refuse to watch it out of sheer pride.
#24254
This troper dosen't bother with complaining about stuff she hasn't seen. This may change when she see's the trailers for the next Last Airbender movie. The first one was crap and she has the need of
BrainBleach to prove it. Had she known how badly Zuko was casted, this trope may have come into play.
#24255
I used to complain about MyChemicalRomance, mostly because
Enoby Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way is a fan and because it's the ultimate stereotypical emo band. Now, I am willing to admit that I enjoy a few of their songs.
#24256
My older brother hates BuffyTheVampireSlayer 'cause he thinks it's immature. In contrast, I hate TheSopranos 'cause it's about gangsters.
#24257
When I first saw a trailer for ''CastleInTheSky'', I dismissed it for seeming too reminiscent of ''AtlantisTheLostEmpire''. Once I actually saw the film, I gave it a slot in my top 3 Miyazaki movies.
#24258
There's a religious TV show aimed for children called ''We Are Catholic''. I once forced myself to watch two episodes, one where a bridge fell when the pope was coming (and apparently the chapel he was attending was ''only accessible by the bridge that just fell!'') and another when the clerk guy got trapped in his own attic home. I found myself facepalming the crap out of my own face at the retarded decisions every damned character made. Oh, and don't get me started on that token blind, orphaned and crippled character, Henry. Dear God, if they made him black or Asian, they would have appealed to every token minority out there.
#24259
My brother and I are like this about the Call of Duty games and the Twilight series. It's not that we openly hate them, so much as the hype machine has completely ruined any chance of us trying.
#24260
My brother does this with a passion. Whenever I start liking something new, he automatically dubs it as "stupid", "annoying", "gay", "girly", etc. Examples include WesternAnimation/AdventureTime, RegularShow, SinAndPunishment, TraumaCenter, {{Transformice}}, {{Homestuck}}, SymBionicTitan, {{Pokemon}}, YuGiOhTheAbridgedSeries, and a few other things. After convincing him to watch/play/read all those, he actually likes most of them.
#24261
I myself, however, am pretty good about not complaining about stuff I haven't watched. I forced myself to sit through two episodes of ProblemSolverz before dubbing it as crap, read the first two Literature/{{Twilight}} books (and saw the first movie) before hating on it, and played an hour into SonicTheHedgehog2006 before taking a hammer to it. Even if I'm told that something is crap, I'll subject myself to it before stating an opinion.
#24262
This troper complained about KodomoNoJikan's fanservice and loli-ness before ever watching or reading it. After reading the manga, I can honestly say... not all of my complains were unwarranted.
#24263
This troper's friend's boyfriend refuses to watch PuellaMagiMadokaMagica simply because the "heads look weird" and because it's too "fanservicey". ...Yeah. And keeping in mind that said boyfriend has watched the MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha anime... Needless to say, this has this troper's friend
slightly annoyed.
#24265
I used to be guilty of this when I was younger. One example I can think of is DetectiveConan[=/=]
Case Closed. Back when it was still airing on AdultSwim, I initially disliked it only because I thought the artstyle was weird. This changed when I happened to catch the first episode of the Moonlight Sonata two-parter while playing on a Gameboy late at night. While it's not one of my favorite anime series, I still quite like it (especially those two episodes).
#24266
My mother both passed this on to me, with her hate of {{Seinfeld}} when I was younger (until I watched it myself), and then fell victim to it followed by going back on it for several shows, most notably FamilyGuy (and subsequently AmericanDad), and also TwoAndAHalfMen.
#24267
Bringing up {{iCarly}} anywhere that isn't a specific fandom area will draw this.
#24268
I have never watched an episode of JerseyShore. Hopefully, I'll never have to.
#24269
This troper says "amen" to that.
#24270
My friend doesn't want to watch Code Geass because it looks like another typical high school mecha show. Granted, I don't like Code Geass either (or rather, I like it for all the wrong reasons), but at least get your facts straight before you bash it. Then he accuses me of not giving Resident Evil a chance (he seriously said: "come on, you're not going to damn a game just because of the controls are you?") despite the fact that I already finished it and still hated it.
#24271
I initially refused to watch Dragon Ball Abridged based on the assumption that it's only trying to ride on the success of Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged. After I watched it, it was somewhat funny but I didn't become a dedicated follower. On the flipside, my friend didn't want to watch Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged because he never followed Yu-Gi-Oh, which by the way is missing the point. He had to eat his words after showing him "Egyptian Laser Beams".

There's a religious show for kids called ''We Are Catholics''. I only watched at least two episodes here and there, yet I love to mock it because of the one-dimensional characters, the poor plotting, etc. I mean, I get the messages they're trying to tell, but still...

''SaturdayNightLive'' in the '90s because it spawned the interminable idiot buddy/lead idiot comedy genre. It forever skewed my concept of comedy in general. So much so, that on the unintentional series finale of ''JoanOfArcadia'', when she ''poured her heart out'' about enjoying those types of movies, I considered it a DethroningMomentOfSuck.

''DukeNukemForever''. I can't believe that after 12 years, they subjected the game to a RapeAsComedy via FaceFullOfAlienWingWong plot. I wasn't particularly looking forward to the game anyway, but I was still aware of Duke's legacy, so it was disturbing to learn that 1) the game was SoOkayItsAverage and 2) that that was the game's story, inasmuch as it has one. I know that the plot had to have been changed since the 3D Realms days, but still, ''that'' was what they came up with? ''That'' crossed someone's desk, and was deemed appropriate for the audience? I'm fully aware that some reviews deem the actual gameplay to be acceptable, but even one of those felt the need to point out that the game's [=NPCs=] don't even react if you shoot at them. It was discouraging to read the comments on a more critical review where the reviewer's personal BerserkButton was the story, where the FanDumb came out of the woodwork to unleash a hellstorm of ComplainingAboutPeopleNotLikingTheShow and how the critic should lose his job.
You'd think he'd personally insulted all of their mothers or something.

I have a friend who will not watch a Tyler Perry movie. He has all of these reasons why he hates it, yet these are all based on things someone else has said. He's never seen the movies. Went so far to complain about the movies being there to "exploit" Black Americans, yet has not seen a single one! Its one thing to dislike it, its another to completely patronize it and the people watching it to the level of UnfortunateImplications in order to excuse never seeing it.

This troper's stepfather hates anime despite having never seen more than three minutes of it in his life. When I finally convinced her mom to sit down and watch ''NausicaaOfTheValleyOfTheWind'', said-stepdad retreated to his room and hid there like a baby the entire 117 minutes so he wouldn't have to watch it (For the record, Mom said Nausicaä wasn't her cup of tea but it did make her think...and she now loves ''MyNeighborTotoro''.).

How do ''you'' know they haven't watched it? It sounded more to me like they were
hating the fans.

This troper used to run in fear from anything Harry-Potter-related, because she'd had a glance at the movie, which terrified her. Then she was introduced to the first book, and fell into the world of Harry Potter. And later fell out of it. The series became increasingly "darker and edgier," as people say, and what she had really loved about Harry Potter was the style prevalent in the beginning. (Then she opened up ''Howl's Moving Castle'', and it was like coming home again, which is odd, because DianaWynneJones was writing long before J. K. Rowling.)

Inversion - I do not like ''MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'', and want to kick the characters except for
Twilight. Every time I mention this, they say I haven't watched it. In fact I have - and it's ''still'' garbage.
