ComplacentGamingSyndrome
#23340
This Troper has a player that is both. On the one hand, in high level play he always plays the same Elven High Wizard, but in games that don't include him, he'll switch characters almost every session.
#23341
Give this troper a Pokemon game, and she will have an Espeon, a Sneasel, or a Linoone in her party by the time she finishes. Even if trading has to be involved.
#23342
This troper always starts with the Water starter and keeps it as my #1 throughout the game.
#23343
Assuming this was posted after Diamond and Pearl's release, this troper notices you said Sneasel instead of Weavile. He went to high school with a girl who loves Sneasel but hates Weavile. If you happen to be her, then this troper wants you to know
he named his Weavile after you.
#23344
Speaking of Pokemon, I always need a Psychic on my team with few, albeit forced exceptions. Alakazam, Xatu, Espeon, and Gardevoir are top choices.
#23345
I tend to accidentally always choose the same starter Pokemon - Bulbasaur in the first gen, Torchic in the second, and Chimchar in the third. I recently replayed Pearl and was very proud of myself for forcing myself to choose Turtwig.
#23346
But Torchic is third gen and Chimchar is fourth.
#23347
Yeah... ThatTroper skipped the generation where Cyndaquil, Totodile, and Chikorita were the starters.
#23348
This troper seems to can't construct a solid competitive team without a Heatran in there somewhere.
#23350
This troper almost always picks a Grass starter, but never Fire. Grass is Godly awesome with Bullet Seed.
#23351
The Chimchar line (Generation 4 games) can learn Grass Knot...
#23352
This troper has had the same Farfetch'd on his team in Leaf Green, Pearl and Soul Silver. Fly, Cut and False Swipe in one high level package is too much to pass up. And yes, its nickname is CH'DING.
#23353
This troper is so very used to using her fire type starter at all times, in any version, that she finds herself wanting to break something when forced to use a Pokemon with a different stat structure (espically if the main difference is less speed). It's so bad that almost her entire competeive team is made up of various sweepers.
#23354
To date, since... Yellow version, this troper has used a Starmie with Surf, T-Bolt, and Ice Beam in every game. And since Gold there would be a Scizor.
#23355
This troper will always, always pick fire-type starters. I wuvs them very much.
#23356
This Troper when playing any generation past Ruby/Sapphire HAS to catch a Ralts. That is female. With a smart stat. Named Copi. She eventually has many many tweaked children.
#23357
This troper can top all of that- he has a single tweaked Swampert that hasn't been out of his main party since ''Sapphire'', and plans to transfer it to Black/White, ''and'' has soloed every Elite Four since 3rd Generation at least once with it. His father, also a Pokemon player, has nicknamed it the "Swampert of Death".
#23358
This one tends to raise lots of Gyarados and Milotic and will have one of the two in her main squad. I plan to transfer my super-tweaked killer 'mons onto Black/White. The first Milotic, named "
Riful", has many tweaked offspring.
#23359
This troper has always had either a Caterpie (Or it's Expy) and a Pidgey's (Again, or it's Expy) fully evolved forms in his party, and has always kept his starter.
#23360
This troper always picks the Water starter and always has a Poison type in my party, no matter what. Usually a Nidoking or Weezing.
#23361
This troper plays with a poster child for this trope in one of her games. All his characters are big black men who can blow stuff up. Steampunk? 6 foot tall former slave taught to use dynamite in the Union Army and with a steamer trunk full of the stuff. Fantasy? 6 foot (or taller) member of the darkest-skinned race available with magic items that go boom. Superheroes? 6 foot tall black man with the biggest explosion power he can get (and no objection to killing innocents if they happen to be in range). Science Fiction? 6 foot (or taller) member of the darkest-skinned race available with grenade launcher and high-tech explosive charges.
#23362
If it summons stuff I play it if there isn't any summoner a mage is my next choice NEVER a melee class unless it's a Jedi
#23364
{{Pokemon}}: Grass type starter. Usually ending up with a psychic-type and water-type at the end. Golducks are sure to be seen.
#23365
SuperSmashBrosBrawl: Marth/G+W.
#23367
WorldOfWarcraft: warlock/shaman
#23368
KingdomOfLoathing: turtle tamer
#23369
This player type is sometimes called the 'specialist', and the best way to keep them happy is generally considered to be to just ''let'' them play a character that fits their preferred archetype. After all, they're there to have fun, too.
#23370
Somewhat related, This Troper enjoys playing 'specialist' archtypes. While this is usually precision-target elimination (Snipers, Assassins, etc), it occasionally spills over to other, similarily specialised tasks (Medic, Crowd Control).
#23371
While this troper tries playing various types of characters, he tends to favour ranged classes (especially spellcasters). Also, his main in [=WoW=]: warlock, his choise of army in
40000}} Warhammer 40K: chaos, his choise of class in
DnD: warlock (or maybe wizard/sorcerer). See a pattern?
#23372
Charlie Brown is so very afflicted with CGS:
#23373
RPGs: Whatever class qualifies as the game's {{Glass Cannon}} (usually Monk, Ninja).
#23374
Mario Kart: Lightweight Driver (Koopa Troopa or Baby Weegee), Kart with high Drift, high Handling, good Acceleration stats.
#23375
Other Racing Games: Lotus Elise, Toyota [=MR2=], Porsche whatever, or anything with a mid-engine layout... the {{Real Life}} version of high Drift, high Handling, good Acceleration.
#23377
This troper has 4 games of ''
Oblivion'' running, each with a different race and sign, but always goes for the same custom class skill set. If it ain't broke...
#23379
This troper, in ''GHOST Squad'', almost exclusively uses the [=SPR11=] and [=TR14=], the two weapons with high penetration capability (which allows them to shoot enemies through damn near any object). He refuses to use any other weapon, and by extension that means avoiding playing the cardless version of the arcade game (since it lacks both of those weapons), unless it's the ''Evolution''
rerelease. Sadly, 100% of the ''GHOST Squad'' machines in the U.S. don't have card slots, and only a fraction of them are ''Evolution'' cabs.
#23380
Sometimes, on ''{{DJMAX}} Portable'', he'll play purely for percentage, ignoring score and the
Fever feature. He finds it
baffling to see people use Fever during percent runs, even though ''Fever has no bearing on percentage and only makes it harder to get high percentages'' due to the screen flashing on using a Fever and using distracting visual effects while it's in effect.
#23381
His thought process for playing Raiden Fighters Aces. For those who can't read fake Java code: this troper tries to resist using the hidden Slave ship, a ship so fast and overpowered it
breaks the game, and instead tries to use other ships to make use of the ''Raiden Fighters'' series' ship variety. After several screwups, he'll give in and use the Slave, and find himself tearing through the game and setting new records.
#23382
In D&D 4E, the Mordenkrad is the only weapon in the universe, period. Magic-user who can wield staves? Staff of Ruin. Period.
#23383
Hyrule Castle is the ONLY good stage in Super Smash Bros. According to this troper, at least.
#23384
Don't you mean Spear Pillar? Preferably while using Pikachu or Lucario. ({{Pokemon}} fan? Me?)
#23385
In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the level's always Hyrule Temple, and my character is always Marth.
#23386
Different characters, but will always pick Shadow Moses Island when given the chance. With the music always set to "Encounter".
#23387
Every time this troper plays an RPG video game, he chooses the exact same look for his character.
#23388
This Troper's general strategies:
#23389
{{MMORPG}}s: Ranged DPS (usually plays a Hunter in WoW, but is currently leveling a Paladin)
#23390
Mario Kart: Low weight, low speed, high maneuverability, high acceleration
#23392
3 man party: one fighter, one healer, one nuker
#23393
4 man party: one fighter, one healer, one nuker and one hybrid (healer/fighter or healer/nuker)
#23394
Shooters: Mid ranged weapons and either runner support or base defense
#23396
This Troper will ''always'' play humans in a strategy game that allows them. Starcraft? I play Terrans. Warcraft? I play Alliance. Dawn of War? I play Imperial Guard. Something about sending plain ol' humans against demons, monsters, and hive-mind aliens is inspirational. Especially when
humanity triumphs.
#23397
The Troper would always play the "Predator" game mode in
Far Cry Instincts: Predator, scarcely touching CTF or Deathmatch. But goddamn was Predator mode fun.
#23398
This troper always plays some variant of melee-based warrior in any MMORPG he plays. In TabletopGames set in the modern age or the future, this troper's first choice is usually some variant of gunman, to take advantage of the GunsAndGunplayTropes.
#23399
I don't usually fall prey to this, but in my TheWorldEndsWithYou file, one will see the following stats on my partner characters (whoever knows who I use most often gets a
prize ;): #QUOTE#'''Beat''': Low-ish #QUOTE#'''Joshua''': Low-ish #QUOTE#'''Shiki''': RLY HIGH OMG
#23400
I suffer from this when it comes to DoomTheRoguelike. I'm one of those guys who likes to focus traits in on one skillset or another, so even in non-challenge games I will normally play a pistol or a shotgun build and eschew everything else.
#23401
This troper tends to immediately go for rogue-style classes and skills.
#23402
Everyone in my family has character we use exclusively in SuperSmashBrothers, except me. I switch between Toon Link, Zelda, and Ganon. And they all make fun of me for it.
#23403
I'm pigeonholed into a single specific strategy in any RTS games I play - hide behind an obscene amount of defenses until I'm armed with what I call God's Fingers (anything that forbids retaliation, such as superweapons, top-tier superunits or, for an example, the Aurora Bombers in C&C: Generals). I know I'd be a very boring person to play against online.
#23404
Although I do fall prey to this in computer games, I'm attempting to methodically avert this in tabletop rpgs by playing a different kind of character every time.
#23405
For me, it's in ADoM and NetHack: gnomish elementalists (or trollish fighters) and valkyries respectively.
#23407
''Always'' has a Scathatch in her demon roster in any Megaten game that has her. She's been my favorite Megaten demon since ''Nocturne'' (the first Megaten I played). Even in the endgame, sure I might have the Voice of God, Lucifer and the Hindu God of Destruction, but that (kinda) cute mid-level shadow warrior queen will be there in my final party.
#23409
In tabletop games, I try to play either TheMario or the GlassCannon.
#23410
TheWorldEndsWithYou: Joshua is always the first partner whose stats are maxed. A Jesus Beam is fine, too.
#23411
SRPG-type games like Disgaea or FF Tactics, my party will always have three spellcasters: TheRedMage, the healer/status-buffer, and one magic nuke.
#23412
Any ''ResidentEvil'' game that has it--that Shotgun ''never'' leaves my character's inventory.
#23413
In Action games like ''Bayonetta'' or ''Devil May Cry'', all my money goes toward blue orbs/purple orbs/witch hearts/moon pearls until the shop no longer carries any. ''Maybe'' I'll buy one or two special skills like Breakdance or Stinger in between. This is always my plan when I decide to start from scratch.
#23415
My younger brother is this in any type of DragonBall Z game. He will almost always pick Goku or Vegeta with a breakthrough (all skills enabled) and his entire strategy is based on little more than firing off an Ultimate Attack. Oddly enough, he told me that people who only pick such characters are derided as weak gamers by others. {{HypocrisyNod}}?
#23417
This troper plays only as Nick in ''Left4Dead 2'' purely for his constant swearing via key bind. "Tits! Dumbshit! ASS CLOWN!"
#23418
This troper sees way too much of it with FiveManBand D&D group.
#23419
TheHero is always a
hulking armored knight and can't comprehend why his friends aren't more like him.
#23420
TheLancer packs light and is either a SquishyWizard or a BareFistedMonk.
#23421
TheBigGuy only knows AttackAttackAttack, but at least he'll be a Druid or a Duskblade once you show it to him.
#23422
TheChick is always an
elven ranger, or if they don't exist in that setting, TheStoic.
#23423
This troper has played Ragnarok Online for 6 years in at least 7 different servers. All the time his character is always a Mage/Wizard/High Wizard
#23424
On the receiving end, MarvelVsCapcom players in this Troper's area always seemed to pick Ryu as one of their characters, always used his
alternate color, and more often than not would use the free
Super Meter to change into Ken as soon as the match started. This Troper nearly developed a Pavlovian urge to hit anyone wearing all-Yellow
with a shield.
#23425
In online games, this troper almost ''never'' plays anything other than a meek yet chivalrous Red Mage or a cynical [=Thief/Rogue=] with a sense of humor (see
TroperTales/SecretIdentityIdentity for details). The closest to breaking the trope was
once when the [=Thief/Rogue=] became a guncaster in a game where magic wasn't optional, but really only uses magic to simulate a sneak attack. Said troper has never played a TabletopRPG, but the first character to be designed after finding an interesting-looking system almost invariably turns out to be a [=Min/Maxed=]
Sorceror equivalent, True Neutral with Chaotic Tendencies or Chaotic Neutral with True Neutral Tendencies. The troper has enough of being the GeniusBruiser in real life (against said troper's will, may it be added), and repeatedly bashing enemies with fists or sword until it's time to use a healing item either seems like a RhythmGame (which doesn't belong in an RPG), a tormenting waste of mental RAM (since you have to pay attention despite the lack of significant variation even with special attacks), or both. Other classes
simply don't fit the characters, or mold their way into being basically the same through the course of the early game.
#23426
This troper has been trying very hard to play on something other than the same
TF2 Surf server they've been playing for months. Most of his maps are surf maps.
#23427
I know what you mean. Dammit 2fort, I like regular maps but you are so addictive for screwing around =O
#23428
This troper's preferred choices:
#23429
For {{Pokemon}}: Totodile Gen 2, Treeko Gen 3, Piplup Gen 4, and for Gen 1, varying, but most often, Squirtle. What, water types? Where do you get that from?
#23430
For Role-Playing Games that have different classes, any class that can cast spells.
#23431
For SuperSmashBrosBrawl, Kirby 95 % of the time, but occasionally any other light character (although Lucas is also good).
#23432
For MarioKart, Toad, using a vehicle (if possible) with low weight, and middling Speed/Acceleration. Which, in MarioKart Wii, ends up as the Magicruiser. But that's also because he likes
Kamek.
#23433
You're forgetting the awesome Off-Road. You can cut through that GBA Shy Guy Beach water like it's paved road where my poor Wild Wing (high speed, drift, miniturbo - low acceleration, handling, offroad) has to stay in the sand. Oh, and there's still a few spots of water you must go through.
#23434
This troper sees so much CGS every time he turns on Halo 3 that he's actually gone to Devil May Cry.
#23435
I always go for, almost always, a mage pure[or the equivalent] no matter what RPG I happen to be playing. In KnightsOfTheOldRepublic [both], I pick scoundrel->jedi consular, or jedi consular, depending on the game. In {{Morrowind}} and {{Oblivion}} I use a Breton with the Mage sign[once though I tried out a wood elf marksman...] and have destruction, alchemy, restoration, and conjuration among my major skills. Even with forum or pen-and-paper or whathaveyou sorts of role-playing, I tend to have a non-fighting character who is specialized in psychology or has healing powers or a power that they don't want...you get the picture.
#23436
A player in
this editor's ''D&D'' group would only ever play elf or half-elf druids.
#23437
I have a friend who only ever plays as Kirby in ''Super Smash Bros Brawl''. For my part, I have a few favorites I'll always play as once per session (Dedede, G&W, and Jigglypuff (for the lulz) are high up there), but then I tend to go to random.
#23438
A friend of this troper had two preferred methods in N64 games: Proximity Mines playing Game/GoldenEye, and Yoshi Valley in Mario Kart 64 (the latter, because he was the only one who wouldn't get lost there). And the troper's cousins ''always'' pick Kirby playing SSBM (Bowser used to be onipresent as well, though after the troper introduced them to Mr. Game and Watch, they like to play with "the 2D man" just for laughs), sometimes even to the point of MirrorMatch, when the fun in picking Kirby is
copying abilities - the girls, on the other hand, love Zelda, specially because she "turns into a ninja!". This troper is partially guilty because when deciding to step into the cousins' fight (specially to stop someone's winning streak), he goes for Samus - or if she was taken, Link.
#23439
I experience CGS just as much as the next guy, but if the whole community has CGS for one particular thing (like everyone using autoshotguns in ''Left4Dead''), I tend to avoid using it as much as I can and have CGS for something else instead (assault rifles in the case of [=L4D=]).
#23440
This troper always plays the Light Side (Lawful Good, Paragon, whatever) characters in {{RPG}}s that allow equially accessible good and evil paths, even on replays, even though everyone and their mother apparently does an Opposite Morality Run the second time around. This troper is fully aware that he is missing out on roughly a half of the game's content this way, but usually justifies it thus: if said content is mostly
petty evil, he doesn't want any part of it.
#23441
You'll be hard pressed to find a
game where it isn't petty, which is the reason why I usually find myself facing a similar dilemma, but my curiosity always gets the best of me and usually results in replaying games several times over just to make sure I get the most out of my gaming experience. IMHO, disregarding such potentially diverse, immersive, and enthralling replay experiences for such trivial matters such as evil being a bit petty or needlessly confrontational just seems a tad bit unreasonable.
#23442
This Troper always plays as Rob, Toad, Dry Bones, or Yoshi on Mario Kart, depending on the game.
#23444
About half of the Smash Bros. Melee matches that this troper played with her friends took place on Hyrule Temple. This carried over to Brawl to a lesser degree.
#23446
This tropette almost only plays with either female characters (balanced, fast, often have lots of moves) and/or relatively fast and tricky males. Athena Asamiya, Chun-Li, Mai Shiranui, Kuradoberi Jam, Yurika, Anji Mito... Ah, and in RPG's, be prepared to see my mages of all kinds be FAR more powerful than my melee fighters: I`ve raised excellent Erks, Priscillas, Aeriths, and others.
#23447
I demand that all chopper flying be done as close to ground level as possible; you'll probably recognize me as the littlebird CloudCuckoolander with no regard for personal safety in Battlefield 2.
#23448
ACR With Shotgun and Tac knife Magnum, sem/stun, Sleight/Stop/COHMAHNDOH? Every facet of infantry combat covered? Check. Highly effective in every scenario? Check. GameBreaker? You bet.
#23449
This troper picks Lucario whenever he plays a fight in ''SuperSmashBrosBrawl''.
#23450
This Troper almost always chooses
Waluigi in Mario Kart Wii.
#23451
This troper picks a stealth class first in almost any game where it is available otherwise, magic, and if its a gun game, I will be the one who snipes, or takes on the entire enemy team with pistol and knife well in hand(surprisingly effective in some situations) don't know why, but in games pistols and sniper rifle just click right into place, everything else takes a lot of getting used to
#23452
Give me a Star Wars game, and I will if at all possible, create a dual-saber wielding bad-ass evil/renegade/dark side female fighter. There's just something about a smoking hot evil chick eviscerating dudes like it ain't a thing.
#23454
As I mentioned in an edit reason on another page, I really like the FN SCAR. It's literally the only weapon I use in ''ModernWarfare 2'' multiplayer, even though I'm demonstrably capable of kicking a decent amount of ass with pistols and shotguns as well. It seems to be a preference for battle rifles more than anything, though, considering I'm always looking for an excuse to use the M14 and FAL in ''Black Ops'' even though I am horrible with them.
#23455
And now I have ''{{Magicka}}''. I've noticed whenever I cast offensive spells, most of the time it's Thunder Bolt cast as a beam.
#23456
Whenever SergeantLuke plays KillerInstinct, he ''always'' picks Spinal. Whenever I try to branch out, I fail miserably.
#23457
Allronix has a pretty set pattern on certain games. MortalKombat? Take Sonya (or Kitana if Sonya's otherwise occupied). KnightsOfTheOldRepublic? Light-side female. I've modded my game to give me ''exactly'' what I want - a modified Scoundrel class with the Sneak Attack, dueling, and rifle feats removed, and the Empathy traits instead, added to a Padawan mod that triggers her cross-class to Consular during the initial conversation with Trask. No Force powers used on Taris aside from the weakest stat boost ones. And the planets always in the same order because it makes the most sense to me continuity-wise. With the second game, I'm more flexible, but my default is a Sentinel male, and mostly gray, but goes dark around Nar Shadaa and Korriban. I even had my default
Shepherd picked out before I got the game. Male, Engineer class, given name of "Walt," romance with Ash that...ends on Virmire. Mostly Paragon, but can't keep his mouth shut worth beans.
#23458
Edgy here. My wife whenever we play Brawl. She only plays as Pit and Lucario. I avent this trope though. While I do have my favorite characters, I usually like to switch characters frequently. This annoys her a great deal because it throws her stratagy off... which is part of my stratagy.
#23459
I have several examples:
#23460
Pokemon: Blaziken. No exceptions. I don't care if I have to trade and breed multiple times to get it, I will have one. And it will be named SPARTAN, all caps, Adamant.
#23461
Civilization III: Germany. Panzers are the best and thou shalt not argue.
#23462
Civilization IV: England (Elizabeth). I can run whatever economy I want and get Redcoats to boot. MONEY MONEY MONEY lets me rush an army of nukes in the Atomic Age.
#23463
Sid Meier's Pirates: Frigate, Large Frigate or Very Very Large Frigate. Approach me and prepare to have the crap beaten out of your ship. Even if you have PlotImmunity like the Evil Spaniards and can't be destroyed, I will blast you to 99% hull damage and 100% sail damage with 1 crew remaining, THEN board.
#23464
Pokemon TCG: Aggron EX. Screw SP cards.
#23465
TheBigL has his examples of Complacent Gaming Syndrome.
#23466
Any Mario Spinoff: Unless it's necessary to complete a mode with all of the playable characters, he'll pick Mario.
#23467
Street Fighter II and IV: I'd usually pick Balrog.
#23468
Smash Bros: Meta Knight competitively, and casually most of the time. I would sometimes pick King Dedede however.
#23469
LordDaddyFunk suffers from this.
#23470
Pokemon: This troper has always had either a Caterpie (Or it's Expy) and a Pidgey's (Again, or it's Expy) fully evolved forms in his party, and has always kept his starter.
#23471
StreetFighter: He always picks Ryu...ALWAYS, attempts to break this by picking Alex in 3rd Strike has had mixed success.
#23472
RPG's: Nearly always a good guy, except with DragonAge2 which I hated and got rid of half the party.
#23473
Shooters: Assault Rifle and air vehicle please.
#23474
Philipthepatsy Since I'm not a picky guy, I generally have a lot of favorites when playing video games and try to use as many of my favorites as possible. However, some are my very, VERY favorites. (Note: I have no way of playing online, so all entries are based off of Multiplayer or being alone)
#23475
Brawl: Captain Falcon will ALWAYS be my first pick, followed by Wario or Dedede
#23476
TatsunokoVsCapcom :
Frank West and either
Alex or ViewtifulJoe will be my first team.
#23477
MarvelVsCapcom: MegaMan and CaptainAmerica are my first choices, simply because they were the first team I ever used.
#23478
MarvelVsCapcom2: Since he's actually in this game,
Bison. MegaMan usually, as well. (Oddly enough, NOT Cap... I'm not sure why)
#23479
MarvelVsCapcom3: Arthur, Haggar, and ViewtifulJoe! On that note, I honestly can't stand Dante, Wolverine, Akuma, Sentinel, and to an extent, DeadPool. Not for THIS game's reasons (except Akuma, I generally like him in the StreetFighter series, but I digress).
#23480
Pokemon: I ALWAYS have to have a Pokemon that knows Stone Edge on my team. It's my favorite of all moves, and Rock Type is generally my favorite type!
#23481
This Troper usually tries to mix things up, but sometimes doesn't. Mostly for fighting games.
#23482
Tekken: Always Dragunov.
#23483
StreetFighter: Rose most of the time, Dudley when I'm not using her.
#23484
MarvelvsCapcom3: Always Spider-Man/Deadpool/Taskmaster.
#23485
MortalKombat: Always Quan Chi.
#23486
SuperSmashBrosBrawl: Always either Pokemon Trainer or Ness.
