CriticalResearchFailure
#29254
This quote-on-quote "article" is simply ''absurd'' in this aspect.
#29255
On purpose. The website is a satirical one.
#29256
My high school started a building project (that would've lasted about 6 months) about 5 years ago and only finished last year. Why? The contractors forgot to build the new building to engineering code. In California, this means mainly earthquake code. To restate: They made construction last 8 times as long as it needed to because THEY FORGOT TO BUILD TO A CODE, REQUIRED BY STATE LAW, THAT ALL BUILDING CONTRACTORS ARE REQUIRED TO BUILD TO.
#29257
This Troper is a college student, living in a dorm. Last night, I was hanging out with some people in my hallway. A girl from the room next door tried to convince me that "couple" stands for 3 things, not 2.
#29258
It ''could'' mean 3 things. A couple of eggs or a couple of pillows. When used as a quantity rather than a noun, it usually means anywhere from 2 to ~7 objects.
#29259
I love using this trope in a comic book I'm working on. Sometimes a character will pull off a CriticalResearchFailure, and then another character will correct him... but end up pulling a major critical research failure in the process. The bigger the research failure, the better. Played for laughs, it's recurring in my creations.
#29260
This Troper encounters some ''weird'' arguments on forums, but this post about ''BlazBlue'' really takes the cake. He doesn't know whether to laugh or cry.
#29261
...What is this I don't even.
#29262
This troper remembers a {{Yu-Gi-Oh}} fansite that said in an [=FAQ=] it was impossible for the character Bakura to be albino, because albino people always have colorless skin and red eyes. This is not true. Red eyes are actually rather ''rare,'' most albinos have pale ''blue'' eyes, and those with more pigment can even have hazel or light brown eyes. Similarly they don't have to be white as a sheet, and those that have darker eyes usually won't be. The only thing that was truly correct was the fact that albinos usually have poor eyesight, and are sensitive to light. What annoys this troper most about stuff like this is that people don't ever check to make sure they got their facts straight, thus furthering the misconception and making doctors in stories sound like idiots.
#29263
This troper had a -gasp- FACEBOOK DEBATE about the Arizona Immigration Law, specifically about how the US Military was being deployed in force by Arizona and another claim. The debate went like this!
#29264
Other Person: Arizona is now deploying the US Army to round up immigrants. Yeah, you're real manly, shooting and killing innocent people.
#29265
Me: Um, what? Arizona has no jurisdiction over the national military. You probably mean a very, VERY different branch. Find it to fix your argument.
#29266
Other person: OK, so the Air Force is killing the people. Whatever. The US military is still killing innocent people.
#29267
Me:...No. Another thing, the US Military hasn't been a military known for its blatant breakage of the Geneva Accords of 1864. At least not for the last 25 years.
#29268
Other Person: You're just pulling this out your ass.
#29269
Me: The Geneva Accords ban the slaughter of unarmed civilians. So tell me, what article tells you that they have? Who has taught you that they're allowed to?
#29270
Other Person: THIS CONVERSATION IS OVER!
#29271
If I may be a cynical devil's advocate here...when have the Geneva Accords been anything more than guidelines for America in this day and age?
#29272
The Posse Comitatus Act prevents federal troops (the US Military) from conducting law enforcement operations inside the United States with very few exceptions. The National Guard is permitted to do certain things if directed by the governor, but then they're not really acting as federal troops. It would be unlikely for someone to flagrantly violate the law by calling in the Army when the National Guard (which is technically part of the Army but usually not called by that term) is also available and much less of a giveaway. If the person in question is incapable of telling the difference between the Army and the National Guard acting under the authority of the governor, that person probably doesn't have much regard for the truth.
#29273
Shorter version: Well, you tell us. When ''have'' the Geneva Accords been mere guidelines for America in this day and age? Do you have actual evidence to back up this claim or are you generalizing based on other unsubstantiated claims?
#29274
Recently? Battle of Mogadishu, 1993. The RoE were, "Fire only on people shooting actively at you, and do not shoot into crowds". When shit went down, the US Military still obeyed those RoE as well as they could. Fact still remains, he said that a state had authority over a Federal organization that they, in truth, had no power over.
#29275
This troper was at an MUN conference. The conference was on terrorism. The girl who was acting as the United States said and I quote "You can't fight terrorism with a national military." Completely unaware that official US policy was to use the military to combat terrorism.
#29276
Can you really blame her for being that much of an idealist?
#29277
This troper suspects that she was criticizing the official US policy.
#29278
In every MUN conference this troper has ever heard of, on matters of policy, accurately portraying the country one is representing is the most important jobs of a team. OOC behavior while in sessions is not tolerated. Ironically, teams representing arch enemies (think Iran and Israel) may become chummy during out of session social events by virtue of the amount of in-character vitriol that can be exchanged.
#29279
What does she suggest we use, harsh language?
#29280
I feel that the idea of fighting terrorists on the ground is moronic and we should have never been in Iraq. What do I suggest we do about terrorists? Blow that entire fucking mountain range to hell. Bomb the motherfucker until it's a huge ass pile of rubble. So Afghanistan will complain. What the fuck will they do, insult and hate us? They already do that.
#29281
The power of love of course. All terrorists really need is a hug.
#29282
''LetsSeeYouDoBetter.''
#29283
An ''inter''national military.
#29284
Yes, because the ''only conceivable'' option to deal with terrorism (which is essentially the result of low popularity) is to shoot people. People who know people. Who know people who like them. Who will in turn not like ''us'' for shooting them. Spoken like a true ZeroPercentApprovalRating villain.
#29285
I have next to no popularity and I've yet to be blown up.
#29286
Or people who take their religion much too seriously. Also, let's not start a flame war in here.
#29287
I ''think'' the idea was that terrorist acts should be treated more as crime than acts of war, but it's not necessarily an either-or question, and more to the point it sounds like she had picked up a single line rather than thought it through.
#29288
Ironically, any Critical Research Failure to be found in ''TheCore'' was overshadowed, for this editor, by a Critical Research Failure encountered in a rant about how much Critical Research Failure ''The Core'' was going to have. "Sci-Fi disaster pic with the stupidest premise in recent memory. Earth is endangered when its electromagnetic field disappears after -- get this -- the planet stops rotating. Hey, you morons, that would also get rid of a little thing we call gravity, and we'd all fly into space."[[http://www.jabootu.com/fall02.htm]] Not only gravity isn't related to rotation, but also, as the title of the movie shows, it's about the Earth's core stopping to spin, not the whole planet.
#29289
For what it's worth, the Earth's core is a significant portion of it, and if you include the Mantle, practically the whole thing, so any gravitational effect would still work. Also, the Earth spinning does cause a gravitational effect analogous to magnetism, but you'd have to move really, really fast for it to affect you. If it suddenly stopped spinning, that would cause a normal gravitational effect, but it would push you in the direction the Earth used to be rotating, rather than up or down.
#29290
Also a "completely oblivious" case: a Brazilian forum had a guy discussing this magazine cover: " I saw the July cover, it's HarryPotter, but they bet'd on a scary face, I don't know who it is and it's not Radiclffe's [sic]". He apparently missed that under the headline "It's Terror!" it continues explaining that the movie is DragMeToHell...
#29291
This Troper's forum handle on the Giantitp forums is [=PhallicWarrior=]. Why? Because in one strip, Durkon tells Roy "Contr'ry to popular belief, swingin' aboot a big phallic sword dinnae make ye more attractive to the opposite sex!" In my preteen idiocy, I assumed that "Phallic" was just a style of sword that I hadn't heard of, what with the recent discussion of bizarrely-named polearms. Even worse, the only thread that allows forumgoers to change their names was reserved for those who lost their accounts in a technical screwup a few years back, so [=PhallicWarrior=] I must remain.
#29292
In some communities I've seen, a username like [=PhallicWarrior=] would be perfectly normal.
#29293
Beware ye those abominable {{Straw Feminist}}s.
#29294
I'm pretty sure you can request a name change from the mods if you have a ''really'' good reason. This would probably count. It can't hurt to PM one and ask.
#29295
You couldn't just register a new name, or do they have some annoying multiple-account rule and stalk your ip?
#29296
This troper was having a friendly, mock argument about countries in a chatroom: #QUOTE# Me: Australia is better than the UK. >: #QUOTE# Other person: Oh yeah? Since when? xD #QUOTE# Me: Since...since..since Makaybe Diva! (A very successful Australian racehorse) #QUOTE# Other person: Makaybe Diva is British xD #QUOTE# Me: OhCrap O_O
#29297
and Phar lap was from New Zealand, but that doesn't matter to us Aussies. :D
#29298
Is horseracing a well-known sport...well...anywhere? I don't see how it fits.
#29299
Something doesn't have to be popular for it to draw a CriticalResearchFailure. It fits because he used that horse to back up the argument that Australia is better, when the horse is in fact of British decent.
#29300
If one argues that Makaybe Diva makes Australia better when it is actually a British horse, that's DidNotDoTheResearch. Like the person above noted, I don't think that horse racing is popular enough for most people to catch this mistake, so it doesn't warrant placement in CriticalResearchFailure.
#29301
To be fair, it's British-born, Australian trained. Arnold Schwarzenegger was born in Austria, but he's an American actor because he acts in America.
#29302
This troper has lost count of how much military fiction written by the non-military falls straight into this sort of territory. I mean, can't these people look stuff up on Wikipedia at least? Because apparently I didn't get the memo that modern assault rifles feed from clips. Nor did I get the message that bullet wounds work that way and Privates could order around Sergeants... Yeah, I find that most of the stuff that isn't written by Ringo or Weber or any of the reputable big names tends to veer straight into and beyond Critical Research Failure. And since when does the Army go "Ooh-rah"?
#29303
Marinus envy.
#29304
modern assault rifles ''do'' feed from clips.
#29305
NO THEY DON'T. >=( Rifles feed from magazines...and you load magazines with clips (optionally...that, or just load them one at a time.) To be fair, modern militaries still distribute ammo for assault rifles on stripper clips (conveniently bundled in bandoliers, no less) which are used to load magazines in combination with a clip guide (often called a spoon.) En-bloc clips, like those used in the Garand, Steyr-Mannlicher M.95, or Carcano, still don't count technically because they are still just used to place rounds into an integral magazine, which is the part designated as the one "feeding" the rifle since it's the part with the spring.
#29306
I had a physics professor who gave a problem concerning an orbiting satellite going up into geosync orbit. How much fuel would it take? Not too hard, but he made one small mistake - that gravity decreases as distance between two particles increase. A mistake not a single student made. When this turned his "solution" into patent bullshit, he turned it into a bonus assignment. Then, when I and another student (we were put into groups) were the only ones to turn in the actual answer, he gave us nothing.
#29307
Without knowing the context, the the teacher's "mistake" seems perfectly correct: the gravitational attraction between two objects ''does '' decrease as those objects get farther apart.
#29308
I think that's what the teacher forgot.
#29309
Everyone's done a CriticalResearchFailure.
#29310
I'm pretty sure I haven--
#29311
''Everyone''.
#29312
This troper read this review of the Gamecube over on {{GameFAQs}}, where the reviewer claimed in his opening sentence the Virtual Boy came out before the NES (Even though the NES came out 10 years prior to the Virtual Boy).
#29313
This troper went to a Danish museum with a display of a whale shark, "the world's largest mammal." My head hurts.
#29314
Especially ironic since the worlds largest mammal (Blue whale) is about twice as large as a Whale Shark.
#29315
The horror movie "Jack Frost" is on the Chiller network -- but DirecTv provides the description from the Michael Keaton family comedy of the same name!!
#29316
This troper's sociology professor was giving a lecture on gender socialization and said that ''androgyny'' is the same as being ''transgendered''. (This is not the case. {{Androgynous}} people fall somewhere between masculine and feminine, but many transgendered people are decidedly one or the other.) A friend's teacher topped that by telling the class that being transgendered is the same as being ''bisexual''.
#29317
Wow...
#29318
Well, if you think about it, transgenders ''are'' androgynous half way through surgery, right?
#29319
This troper's father did something similar a few years back. Holding a perfume, he said quite loudly, "Hmm, for both male and female use? Hey, this is a ''bisexual'' perfume!"
#29320
Quite the contrary, that's a perfectly valid use of the word "bisexual".
#29321
Must suppress murderous rage
#29322
This troper's geometry teacher had a CriticalResearchFailure when it came to ancient history. We were talking about the way that the Babylonians would solve problems, and somehow we got to Egypt and the Nile Valley (don't ask, I have no idea). He said that the reason that Egypt was so fertile was because of the annual flooding of the Nile. Okay, well that's just fine, but he also went on to say that the Babylonians never had to deal with floods. This is despite the fact that ''their civilization was founded between two enormous rivers''.
#29323
Dis Maek Brane Hurt. (The Babylonians even had a department built around organizing agriculture to easily deal with the after-effects of floods altering the river and land parcels).
#29324
During Social Studies, this troper's the class had to find certain cities and countries. A ''black'' classmate asked if ''Hungary was located in Africa''.
#29325
I am pretty sure he was trying to say "hunger". Your sensitivity is noted
#29326
...As is the black kid's. But yeah, I think he was referring to African poverty.
#29327
So, either he was asking if the country Hungary was located in Africa (It's in Europe), or he had a complete non-sequitur by asking about hunger in Africa during an assignment to locate cities and countries.
#29328
I thought Hungary was right next to Turkey.
#29329
Wait, since when did black people know everything about Africa?
#29330
Pot Hole-ing to Fantastic Racism? Since when did black people only exist in fiction?
#29331
Apparently being an atheist means that this troper is a satanist. Or, at least, that's what some extremely religious girl repeatedly claims.
#29332
Tell her you want to show her a video. Show her the video of JonStewart + some others (can't remember what they're called) singing "GO FUCK YOURSELF!". If you can, record her reaction with a webcam and post it on YouTube.
#29333
That's nothing. A few years ago, our local supermarket's parking lot was flooded with leaflets warning about all the dangers teenagers were in of going to Hell. Such gems as "They show an interest in Satanic religions, such as Wicca, Hinduism, and Buddhism", "They dress in dark clothing", or my personal favorite, "They show an interest in masturbation or sex".
#29334
To be fair, showing an interest in sex when you're a teenager usually means you're a teenager, but I really can't stand the whole assumption about being "goffik".
#29335
Not quite to the point of Satanist, but apparently I'm atheist because I'm not christian. Let me just say that because of my fears of death and what afterlife there may be I am unable to be an atheist. I need my belief in god in order to function, but I'm also unable to be any organized religion because everything has been translated from something, if not passed down from word of mouth, thus something has gotten lost in translation or some idiot just added something at some point that no one noticed.
#29336
For the longest time, this troper thought that "Sayonara" was Spanish. Absolute. Fail.
#29337
This is actually 'very' common. I guess Sayonara doesn't give off enough Japanese vibes.
#29338
Same with this troper.
#29339
That's probably thanks to Bugs Meany (possibly exacerbated by one Roger Klotz, but I don't know if he ever said it was Spanish). It took ''DaveBarry'' to give the actual source a foothold in much of the American public consciousness.
#29340
This troper's English teacher claimed that Athena was the Greek goddess of love.
#29341
Same here, the same English teacher also thought Hera was Hercules' mom!
#29342
This Troper has a book about games. A little box in that book discussing the history of Knucklebones apparently states that the Trojan War occurred in the ''13th CENTURY''. It was probably just a misprint, but it was still very glaring nonetheless.
#29343
The Ancient Greeks believed that the Trojan War happened in the 13th century '''BC''', so that's not an unreasonable thing to say; just that they should've specified ''which'' 13th century.
#29344
A former classmate of this troper once said that kicking a woman in the vagina wouldn't hurt; it would feel good. Because vaginas are very sensitive.
#29345
But... if the vagina is very sensitive, wouldn't being kicked in the vagina hurt on the level of a man being kicked in the groin?
#29346
Having taken a knee to that particular part of anatomy I can say, yes it hurts like a bitch. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
#29347
I, a female, have actually suffered a GroinAttack. Given the right amount of force, nerve endings don't care if there are no balls!
#29348
Years ago, This troper stumbled onto a site where people would post articles complaining about whatever was on their mind (Basically, it was a gigantic, multiuser blog; where people can post their rants). One of the ones I saw was someone complaining about the MagicalGirl genre in general, although they clearly showed they had no idea what they where talking about; they claimed that the sole reason SailorMoon exists is because of the success of shows like PowerpuffGirls and WinxClub, shows like {{Anime/Pokemon}} and NeonGenesisEvangelion fall under the same genre simply for being from Japan, and that the original HeManAndTheMastersOfTheUniverse was the best show ever. I {{Facepalm}}ed for the very first time when reading that article; a shame the site that hosted it went down, otherwise I would include a link to it.
#29349
Not a major one, but slightly amusing when you think about it. A friend of mine told me not to play Dawn of War 2 as it was a cheap rip off of Company of Heroes. Considering Dawn of War was released first...
#29350
Did your friend realize that Relic Entertainment made both series?
#29351
Yes, he did.
#29352
Remembered one of my own ones. I was twelve (so, this was about five years ago) and, due to a critical research failure in music, I thought Madonna was dead, actually saying this in a French lesson. Yeah, I got corrected pretty quickly when she released another single. Then again, my mother listened to music from the seventies and eighties when I was twelve, so it was understandable as she had only played "Papa Don't Preach"...
#29353
Oh, one final one. This troper recently thought that the British empire only lasted for two or three centuries (the kicker: I AM British!). To be fair, though, I hate history and haven't sat in a history lesson for four years.
#29354
A girl in my class asked if Britain was in France. Epic Fail. Another time occurred in a history class with students writing down that George Washington was the first vice president of the United States. Big Fail.
#29355
Not that epic, actually : France doesn't have Britain, but it does have Brittany. Right near the UK.
#29356
This troper has shaved with a straight razor nearly every day for the past 3 years. Haven't ever given myself any major cuts, haven't even had any minor ones in over 2 years. Yet still, just about EVERYONE who discovers this feels the need to give me a speech about how dangerous it is, how recklessly foolish I am, and make a statement along the lines of "only a person with a death wish would put some of the sharpest edges in the world right on his throat." So...''how exactly'' do they think anybody shaved before 1900 or so? Because I, and mountains of historical records can guarantee you most people weren't waxing their faces. In fact, it's not hard to learn how to do it right, either...the two main reasons being that you're only holding the blade at about a 15 degree angle to your skin, and that you're not using force to cut. You use a shaving brush and some special soap or cream to lubricate, and then all of the cutting force is supplied by what I would describe as "the mass of the blade." You don't need to push because of how sharp it is...to illustrate, most knives are sharpened on stones whose fineness is graded as about 480 or 600 "grit" (the higher the grit, the finer the edge). Most straight razors have their final sharpening done on stones of about 8,000 or 12,000 grit.
#29357
On the other hand, the ignorance also works to my advantage, somewhat. Having had a string of three attractive girlfriends who all shared a preference for me having a particular area shaved...I do so once a month or so...also with a straight razor. Through a series of wacky coincidences, my friends discovered this, and they now think I'm some kind of badass for daring to bring such a blade to...my...
#29358
You, sir, have truly enviable balls. I want to shave (my face, for starters) with a straight razor, but the only one around is an ol' rusty one. Personal difficulties aside, I salute you.
#29359
On a recent trip to Europe, This Canadian Troper stayed at a hotel in the London suburb of Croydon. After a conversation with the clerk at the front desk, he said, "Your English is very good." When I said that it was my first language, he said, "But aren't you 95% French over there?" I then explained to him that the majority of Canada outside Quebec is English-speaking. (To his credit, though, he was very nice and well-mannered. Just misinformed about Canada.)
#29360
This Troper visited an exhibition about Tutanchamun and other Egyptian stuff. In one room they had a big fake-wall depicting a king, a queen and two girls with laaarge backheads. The comment read basically, that Egyptian princesses were depicted by a flattened back of the head. Just.Two.Meters beneath was a bust with the head of a girl with a large, flattened back of the head and the comment just read "We have no clue why the girl has a flattened head". Seriously?
#29361
This troper's yearbook contains many pages on life at my high school, like sports, clubs, and various interests. One page is dedicated to "comparing" the class of 2010 (my class) to the class of 1990. They obviously just took things that were stereotypically 90's for the 1990 class, including "grunge fashion" (I live in Seattle), "watching Seinfeld" and "a new oversized cell phone". However, there are two glaring research failures, both under "Hobbies/Interests". One is "playing with a Furby" and the other is "Nintendo 64". For those who don't know, Furbies were released in North America in 1998 and the N64 in 1996.
#29362
This Brazillian troper read an essay about Brazilian History that claimed Darcy Ribeiro, one of the most known anthropologists and interpreters of Brazilian culture and society, was a woman. Of course, Darcy can be an ambiguous name, but this came from students from one big Brazilian university and it doesn't help that one edition of his book put a photo of Ribeiro with his moustache.
#29363
This troper's rather ''free spirited'' cousin has had some rather stunning examples. When visiting a museum she was surprised to learn that yes stars really ''were'' other solar systems like in StarTrek, and that no dinosaurs ''weren't'' fictional creatures made up for JurassicPark.
#29364
Better than her thinking she could become a Pokemon trainer when she turned ten.
#29365
Was she a creationist?
#29366
Ages ago, when this troper was in high school history class, we finally got around to study the Vietnam War. The teacher had one student go up to the labeled world map and point out Vietnam. He started looking around in Europe. When advised by the teacher that he was looking at Europe, the student responded "Which of these countries is Europe?"
#29367
This Troper realized the other day that America doesn't have castles, I mean...why would it? I just assumed for the longest time that it did ''for no reason at all!'' Ugh.
#29368
But it does! It's just that with few exceptions they were build less than 200 years ago, and not really for defensive purposes.
#29369
Some Americans believe that Europe is full of castles. It is true, we all got a castle each! We're up to ''here'' in castles!
#29370
Except for the Dutch. The Dutch live in Windmills.
#29371
We even have a "real" royal palace: Hawaii's.
#29372
This troper remembers someone bragging on an IRC channel on how they had 15 years of Linux experience. This was in 2003 (2003 - 15 = 1988); Linux was created in 1991, with the first distributions (distros) coming in 1992 or 1993.
#29373
I once read an essay criticizing socialism, where the phrase "To each according to his need, from each according to his ability" was deconstructed as rewarding the poor for having need and punishing the rich for having ability. I somehow thought the writer was an objectivist, as that was the most extreme right-wing ideology I knew. Forgive me!
#29374
I'm pretty sure Rand had those exact same lines in AtlasShrugged, so...you were probably right. Why is this here then?
#29375
This troper was involved in some heavy arguments on existence of god on Minitokyo's Religion & Science board. The then-current argument was about heart / mind and brain. When he said that all the emotions that you felt are not on the heart (the other side say that heart here means literal heart), but in your brain, the person he's arguing against, who's been arguing against many people with only her faith in Christianity, asked back that (from recollection) "Do scientist have proof for that?". He wished that back then he answered "Well, let's try cutting your brain out and see how you responds".
#29376
This troper is from Texas. I have seen people from other parts of the country express great surprise that we:
#29377
Do not go to school or work on horses -- some of us have never even ridden a horse before -- or that not all of us own great, big pickup trucks.
#29378
Don't all have close connections to the oil industry or to farming or ranching. Nor do we all live out in the country; about 70% of Texans live in cities.
#29379
Have such "advanced" things as electricity, telephones, computers, and the Internet. Interestingly enough, every single person I know of who's expressed surprise about the whole "electricity" thing has come from Chicago.
#29380
Don't all speak in stereotypically broad Texan accents. There are some older Caucasian Texans who do, but either the accent is muted or pretty much gone away amongst the younger ones, and a great percentage of Texans aren't even Caucasian to begin with (and thus would come with their own accents/lack-of-accents).
#29381
Don't all live a "country" lifestyle, e.g. listen to country, wear snakeskin boots and ten-gallon hats, etc. In fact, we can sometimes pick out the tourists by their wearing snakeskin boots and ten-gallon hats!
#29382
Know about such things as modesty, humility, quietness, etc. We are not all loud-speaking, boorish, rude, ill-educated yokels. Our percentage of loud-speaking, boorish, rude, ill-educated yokels is in line with the national averages.
#29383
I could go on with this list. Suffice it to say, it irritates me when people get the wrong perception of Texas, especially since {{Richard Linklater}} exists and has created realistic portrayals of Texas in cinema, e.g. ''{{Dazed and Confused}}'' and ''{{Waking Life}}''.
#29384
This Troper has the exact same thing happen, except with Alaska. We don't ride polar bears to work, we don't live in igloos, and it doesn't get to absolute zero.
#29385
Once during a visit to South Carolina, This Troper was told that I'm a northerner because I live in Virginia. I'll just let that sink in a second.
#29386
This Troper is from South Carolina, and I called someone from Maryland a [[{{CriticalReasearchFailure}}northerner]]... Maryland's northern border is the Mason-Dixon Line.
#29387
This Troper was recently looking at the GameFAQs Top 10 lists, reading a list of the best FinalFantasy bosses. The list was all right until he noticed on #4 was Gilgamesh, where he's described as "the right-hand man to Exdeath, a mix of a serious swordsman and a comic relief". So, the description seems to be accurate, right? Well, the only problem is that the list says he made his first appearance in ''FinalFantasyVI''...(Yes, I know he was included in the GBA rerelease as a BonusBoss, but this is also about what games they're from.)

Once I had an astronomy teacher who claimed, among other things, Mercury was the hottest planet in the solar system all day and night, Venus the fire acid thunder planet was the '''second hottest''', and Saturn was the only planet with rings. These are all amateur mistakes.
#29389
Or just terribly outdated. It was believed for hundreds of years that Saturn was the only planet with rings.

This troper once, on holiday in Spain, overheard a tour guide explaining that the word "colonisation" is derived from Cristobal Colon. FacePalm.

This Troper (@/CCharmanderK) is unfortunate enough to be in contact with a complete ''idiot'' on the internet. This guy actually firmly believes that FUNimation is ''ruining'' the anime industry (when they are, in fact, ''saving'' it), that FUNimation ''forced'' ADV and Geneon into foreclosure and then ''bought up all of their works'' (which is untrue and impossible; business doesn't work that way for one, and ADV Films and Geneon shut down due to low sales and, thus, low income, not to mention that FUNimation only has a fraction of ADV's library and still lacks quite a few Geneon licenses). He is brainwashed into thinking that anything FUNimation touches will become utter fucking shit without even bothering to ''check out whatever the fuck it is they're doing with it''. Again, this dude is a complete ''idiot''.

This troper once said he was from an island off the coast of Switzerland. Switzerland is landlocked. The other person was fooled.

So did you claim to be from Mainau, Reichenau or Lindau?

This conversation with a devout Mormon girl. (The conversation had been about the meaning of Lady Gaga’s meat dress. Well, she asked…) This is not the EXACT conversation, but close. #QUOTE#Girl- Did you know that a kid in our school is actually gay? Not gay as in weird, but gay as in wears TIGHT pants, girl shirts, flannel… EEW. #QUOTE#Me- Yes, I know. He’s flaming. #QUOTE#Girl-Well, if he just met a girl that was gay… #QUOTE#Me- I’m sorry, but that’s just not how homosexuality works…
#29395
The girl burst out laughing as if I was crazy...

A teacher of mine once claimed, in full seriousness, that a normal year has 366 days and a leap year has 367. What.
#29397
Pfff, one of my teachers insisted that all mountains were once volcanoes, and taught us the order of operations incorrectly.
#29398
One of my teachers told us that the Vikings colonized New York. Did they visit North America? Yes. Did they go as far south as New York? No. Did they establish any colonies? No.

This American troper was trying to get his mother to watch The Hogfather movie in a hopes of getting her to read Discworld novels. Then we ran into this: #QUOTE#Me: The books are British! (Jokingly trying to make them sound 'exotic') #QUOTE#Mom: Is the movie in English? #QUOTE#Me: (Confused) It's British as well. #QUOTE#Mom: Is it in English? #QUOTE#Me: (Laugh thinking it's a joke - awkward pause)...Are you serious? #QUOTE#(After I answer and explain my shock she ranting about how the British, ya know the ENGLISH speaking English isn't common knowledge and how rude an arrogant I am for assuming she should know something like that!) Seriously did I make the error or did she?

In an online discussion, this troper saw someone declare that "All 'American' music is African-American. All of it." She didn't mean that all styles of music associated with America were ''influenced'' by African-American music (largely right, but not entirely), she really did mean they were either done by African-Americans or stolen from them and re-purposed.
#29401
This is quite common among less-than-knowledgeable racial activists. This troper had a history professor who once claimed that black women (''only'' black women, mind you) have a wide variance in skin tone because of the genetic influence of white slave masters who raped their slaves.
#29402
On TheOtherWiki I had to revert (and, after he failed to heed my warnings, block) a user who edited the articles about the Biblical kingdoms of Judah and Northern Israel, claiming that the land was under Islamic and Byzantine rule during the time. (The Biblical history covers the 11th to 6th century BCE; Byzantine Empire came to existence in the 4th century CE, and Muhammad was born in the 6th century CE.)

The Brazilian distributor of Disney comics started a collection of "Disney Literature Classics". On a social network, a fan was complaining about ''TheLordOfTheRings'' being one of the titles. First reply: it was a book (response: "So what?"). And then: the book is from 1937! Response: "The explosion of interest about LOTR started in 2001! There's nothing classic about it!" ...when the book is the TropeMaker of the StandardFantasySetting. No comments.

This Troper once told someone that he was from New Mexico and they responded by asking "Doesn't everyone speak Spanish down there."
#29406
This troper, also from NM, shares your pain. She's answered this by bursting into Dutch just to mess with people.

This Troper is also from NM and used to get asked on a regular basis if he needed a green card to get into the US or stated that it was amazing that I speak good English for a Mexican...THAT NEVER GETS OLD...XD

On one of the YouTube videos with the DEA agent shooting himself in the foot, some people made some racist remarks about AffirmativeAction. One person responded: #QUOTE#responding to all the white racist people that posted comments he's just stupid affirmative action has nothing to do with it,? white people love the way we work thats why they had us build this country for 400 years they just don't want to pay us. sorry slavery is long gone. If you can accept a retard like bush and keep him in office for 2 terms then we can get a pass too.
#29409
As we all know, America is about ~200 (236) years old and not all whites supported racism. Also, slavery existed in America for 89 years (1776 - 1865), and in the colonies for an additional 157 years (1619 - 1776). 246 != ~400 years. And he even points out that slavery is long gone (145 years), yet fails to take that into account (assuming he was even referring to the combined lifespan of the American colonies and America itself, which is 404 years total, rather than picking a large number at random). He also fails to take into account that black people in America have the right to vote. I guess he never got word of it, despite the fact that it happened 141 years ago (1870). I guess he is really old and starting hiding from the Soviet Union around the time E. V. Debs ran for president. Wait, that was 35 years after. I guess he's just as knowledgeable about America as that DEA agent is about guns. Wait, why are the Drug Enforcement Agents teaching kids about guns?
#29410
Could someone look over this and decide if I should move it to TroperTales/DidNotDoTheResearch. I'm not so sure how obvious it is anymore.
#29411
Keep it, if only for the "America is 400 years old" thing.

In this review of Dune 2000, the reviewer states "OK, Westwood was smart to take a cue from Starcraft and put some effort into storyline. D2K uses a similar system where you see cutscenes between each single player mission. Instead of Starcraft's 3D-animated scenes, they chose to go with live actors instead." One of the main things that separated [=CnC=] from the other RTS games of the era presentation wise was the FMVs. He even compares Dune 2000 to Red Alert, without realizing that Red Alert, which came before Starcraft, already did it. He also seems really mad that a remake of Dune 2 on the Red Alert engine plays like a mix between Dune 2 and Red Alert, but that probably some other trope.

I was once driving while my brother listened to the radio. For one show, the host was trying to make it sound super important, and at one point called it, "...a show which will live in infamy..." You ''do'' realize that "infamy" means "bad", right? Basically, in trying to make it sound big, he said it'd be remembered for being incredibly horrible. Yeah.
#29415
It's like the Three Amigos: "The In-famous El Guapo." "What does that mean, in-famous?" "Oh, Dusty. In-famous is when you're MORE than famous. This man El Guapo, he's not just famous, he's IN-famous."
#29416
Maybe he basing the comment on FDR's speech after Pearl Harbor "A day which will live in infamy"?
#29417
Well, duh, but what FDR was saying was, "This day will be forever remembered as a terrible day." That's a research failure for you, too.
#29418
In the fourth grade, one of this troper's classmates said that he heard the asteroid that caused the KT extinction also caused Pangea to break up. Understandable, considering the fact that he was nine years old at the time. And then the ''teacher'' states that a "new study" shows that the ''ice ages'' is what caused Pangea to break up. She then goes on to teach that birds are cold-blooded because they evolved from dinosaurs (and dinosaurs are reptiles, so they ''must'' have been cold-blooded) and laid eggs.

StephenKing called StephenieMeyer a bad writer. Flamewars ensued. A particular comment was a glorious example of this: "Is he jealous or what? I'm having a hard time finding a reason why he hates Meyer so much...? Is it because she has a movie coming out and another one in the making based on HER books and he has not had one based on his?" (was here, OP deleted, but posts commenting it can be found)

Someone in my 9th Grade History class said that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was the current leader of Israel. This is supposed to be after a week+ of research on the topic.
#29421
Well...At least he knows that there's some relationship between the two? The leader of Israel, the leader of the movement to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth... thats not ''such'' a big difference.
#29422
"Wipe Israel off the face of the Earth" is itself a CRF, or at least a Did Not Do The Research (or a Beam Me Up Scotty). While the original Persian quote from which that commonly-misquoted phrase is derived is certainly belligerent, it does not mention either Israel or the Earth. It refers to the "Zionist regime" (which, whether or not you accept that evaluation of Israel's government, is not equivalent to the people living within the state of Israel) being wiped from the "page of time," not the Earth. Far be it from me to suggest that Ahmadinejad is not a nice guy, but as most people informed about Middle East geopolitics will tell you, any of his grandstanding and grandiose statements are just that - Iran understands very well that it is in no shape to take on Israel, let alone its perennial enemies Saudi Arabia and (American-backed) Iraq.

Last year, this troper had to do a project on a country for her history class. She chose Japan. Then, she also had to a a project for her Italian class (they were both simple projects, by the way). So one day, she was at home working on the Italian project and was making the flag for Italy. Her little cousin was watching and said, "You're doing it wrong. The flag is red, white and blue, not green." Understandable because she was only 4 and wouldn't know. However, this troper's mother, who was reading a book on the couch, came over and looked at the flag. What did she say? "Honey, that's because [troper] is making the ''Japanese'' flag, not the American one." Whaa...?

Ever noticed the frequency of weird mutations occuring in India? A lot of people on the internet will ALWAYS claim it's caused by inbreeding, even though incest is strictly forbidden by Indian law and tradition. The one time I pointed this out the answer I got was "Oh yeah how stupid of me. Maybe it really IS a miracle." No. It's due to bad healthcare and malnourishment. Dumbass.
#29425
This is a critical research failure from your side. Neither bad healthcare or malnutrition can cause mutations. Inbreeding also can not cause mutations, it just makes them noticeable.

This Troper was playing SengokuBasara Samurai Heroes with a friend when he asked "Man, wouldn't it be awesome if DateMasamune was real?". This may also be a BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor as the real Date Masamune most certainly ''not'' an Engrish-speaking Badass who wielded six swords at once. and his horse was most certainly ''not'' a motorbike...

This (atheist) troper was involved in a discussion about religion on the Internet (surprisingly flame-free). There were two main Critical Research Failures, one by me and one by the main religious advocate. Mine involved a discussion on how religious texts can be reinterpreted to mean almost anything, and as an example I used the book of Genesis. I said that because Adam and Eve were considered inanimate until God "breathed" life into them, ergo, the Bible supports the idea that life begins at the first breath, not conception. He countered with Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you;". I lost that one. However, after the topic of evolution came up, he claimed that evolution didn't have scientific evidence behind it, because "A transitional fossil has never been found." Needless to say, I corrected that assumption.

This troper heard a bunch of morons (Likely inspired by Yahtzee since they also post on the Escapist.) claim that you never block in any JRPG, it's always a dice roll. Then they say that the ''TalesSeries'' only requires two buttons, attack and artes despite there being a "Guard" button. Never mind a lot of JRPGs let you choose to guard, or how many WRPGs just have the shield contribute to your block chance. A lot of 'em obviously never played a JRPG or claim not to have but it's quite amazing to see how many research failures there are. One of the worst was an idiot who said that in ''MarioAndLuigiSuperstarSaga'' you have to just stand there and take any hits that come at you, and that Cackletta was impossible because she always gets to go first and you start at 1 HP. The research failure is his own inability to figure out that you can actually dodge and counter attacks. Given that he got all the way to the final boss, it's ''quite'' impressive that he made it that far without knowing that. (Especially since eveyr time an enemy makes an attack, ''it shows'' the button prompts telling you if you block with a hammer or jump-dodge, and that the game tells you ''NUMEROUS TIMES'' how to block and dodge.)

Once, to try and get kids into poetry, the school brought in a Rapper to teach us how rap is just a form of poetry, telling us 'we should enjoy this, its the things kids like you like'. About fifty percent of the class were either metal heads or goths, or punks.

Secondly, in history, when learning about Native American Tribes, we were asked to say the names of tribes we know. Since Apache and Cree had been suggested, I said Quillette. This prompted all the girls to say 'oh thats the one in Twilight' and the boys to say 'no, its not a real tribe'. I actually said it does exist, but Twilight portrays it as incredibly innacurate. When no one believed me, the super genius History teacher said yes, it is real, and then searched it up on Wikipedia to prove it.

My parents are getting better, but have always had (and still kind of do) have an issue with anime. Here's a paraphrased dialogue: #QUOTE#Me: Well dad, not ''all'' anime is smutty, you know. #QUOTE#Dad: Yeah, I know. But I mean, there's ''a lot'' that is. #QUOTE#Me: Right, but it depends on the demographic it's aimed at. #QUOTE#Dad: I know. But really, porn is more popular in Japan. #QUOTE#Me: No, it's not. #QUOTE#Dad: Um, yeah, it kind of is.
