My sister had a very bad case. She mispronounced "TVTropes" as "TV Troops." Even people with very little knowledge of the site besides name know that it rhymes with "rope."
#25306
Upon seeing Saw the video game in too many shops next to the children's section, I looked it up on the 'net and my dad told me some decent facts. Talking about the serial killer one day, Mum (who didn't watch the film) said So Saw isn't really his name then?
#25307
True story: one time, this Troper's dad mentioned that he hated the {{X-Men}}, particularly "that one that drowns you with his toxic saliva.'' Granted, we were discussing the film versions at the time; if it turns out there's such a character in the comics, the joke's on me.
#25308
Sounds like Toad, in the scene where he spits in Jean's face and seals her mouth shut.
#25309
This troper was once shown a drawing by a friend of a main character from a video game. The character wore orange goggles and was called "{{Halo}}".
#25310
Sounds like a pretty cool guy to me.
#25311
Upon buying her first Zelda game, TheLegendOfZeldaTheWindWaker, this troper took almost a year to realize that Link wasn't a girl named Zelda.
#25312
Pretty much anyone I know that has played an LoZ game has thought that Link's name was Zelda.
#25313
Odd subversion: my relatives of Irish descent thought that Samus was male because her name is very similar to the male name Seamus. Then again, her name does come from the female variant for Seamus, but still a tad strange.
#25314
Before I got Ocarina of Time my friend showed me the beginning and pointed out which one was Zelda (in the dream sequence). The problem was I though he meant that Link was Zelda and that the main character was look alike of Zelda. Of course, since you meet Zelda a short time later I learned the truth.
#25315
When I once played my sister's copy of Ocarina of Time, I seemed to get the idea from some of Navi's dialogue that I was playing as Zelda, and Link was some supporting character I had yet to meet for myself. Then a few months later, I saw Link in the character select screen on a copy of ''SuperSmashBros'' at the nearby mall and quickly realized my mistake.
#25316
This troper was wandering around the Internet, and came upon a picture of Caprica Six, with the caption "I'd frak Starbuck." {{Facepalm}}.
#25317
And another one: A bottle fairy from ''TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'' identified as "pink Navi."
#25318
This troper's mother once tried to claim that the Uncle Cracker song "Damn It Feels Good to be Me" was originally a Jimmy Buffet song. I told her that the sound was similar to a typical Jimmy Buffet song, but that it wasn't one of his. She didn't believe me.
#25319
This troper recalls having this conversation with a friend in fourth grade recess: ->"I just got a new {{Nintendo}} game. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link!" ->"Neat! Umm, who's Link?" ->"Link is Zelda's real name."
#25320
This troper once told her mother a story about Mario. Later, she said I was talking about Pac-Man. I even mentioned this trope to her. She also once saw a clip of FamilyGuy and asked if it was SouthPark.
#25321
My mum is unbelievably bad about this. One time I'm watching ''X2: X-Men United'', she's sitting on the other side of the room, not really paying attention. She hears the name Logan mentioned. Without thinking, she asks me "Is this ''LogansRun''?"
#25322
That's... that's really freaking funny.
#25323
Pretty sure he posted this somewhere else (IAmNotShazam maybe?), but once this troper's mother walked in while he was watching ''{{House}}'', pointed to House himself on the screen and asked "Is that the doctor from ''House''?" MemeticMutation between this troper and his cousin soon followed, to the point where they refer to the show as "Dr. From". Also, they like to watch that show about Dr. Jack {{Lost}}, but they can never remember what it's called.
#25324
In this troper's TV Production class, when someone wore a green striped shirt for a video, someone commented, "You look like Steve from Steve's Clues." ...yeah, you might be missing something there.
#25325
This troper's sister thought that a piece of music form SuperMarioBros3 came from a non-existant game called "SmashBros4. Her source? A FRIGGIN FILPNOTE.
#25326
This troper recently read a semi-aversion in a local newspaper. It was a short piece dealing with smack-talk over Xbox Live. On the one hand, a screenshot from ''CallOfDuty 4: ModernWarfare'' was correctly labeled as such, but on the other hand, Blizzard Entertainment is apparently now the name of the network World of Warcraft connects to.
#25327
This troper accidentally did this while making a Walfas comic, the ending of which was based on the TouhouProject fangame, Concealed the Conclusion. He however, made two big mistakes. He credited the game's bad ending for his idea, in which realizes the whole game was a dream, but it was the good ending, when turns out to be a dream of Reimu and Marisa. He also made it sound like was the only one to dream of Gensokyo, contradicting the good ending. Whoops.
#25328
This troper's computer illiterate father once saw she was on her computer and asked, "Oh, are you tweeting your friends on MyFace?"
#25329
Were you sitting on his face, per chance?
#25330
This troper sympathises. His computer-illiterate mother ''always'' says "texting" when she means e-mail and "e-mail" when she means instant messaging.
#25331
I recently had something like that, my mother got her first computer this year and as I was helping her connect it to our network I warned her "keep in mind that with three computers several game systems and other devices connected to our wifi, the connection may stall on occasion" and she nods and says "right because of all the internets on the computer" I bit my tongue to keep from laughing and said "yeah something like that"
#25332
This troper was moving and while waiting to leave her old home, was sitting outside reading ''{{Yu-Gi-Oh}}''. One of the movers asked what I was reading, and I held it out so she could see the cover, which led her to exclaim, "Oh, Yugimon!
#25333
This Troper's mom used to call {{Yu-Gi-Oh}} "Yugimon" because the only other anime she really knew of at the time was {{Pokemon}}. It annoyed my young self to no end.
#25334
This troper's friend's nephew was once heard uttering, "{{ptitlewiz5pz1p}} is a pretty good song," by our Skype voice chat gang. Does that count?
#25335
Well, it could mean this song from ''{{Baccano}}''.
#25336
This Troper bought ''Guinness World Records 2010: Gamer's Edition'' (Not making that up). It has some interesting records...but it makes a number of mistakes, such as referring to MetalGear 2: Solid Snake as "[=MGS2=]: Solid Snake" and making the somewhat classic mistake of thinking that Marth and Roy are from the same game in the FireEmblem series.
#25337
This Troper's dad is notorious for this. An example that comes to mind was when he was trying to teach me Math, and the topic was probability. He went on to talk about the Joker flipping his coin.
#25338
Mum asked if Inception was a Batman film.
#25339
It was rumored at one point to be the third Batman film so it's understandable.
#25340
Same troper himself thought that the main character in "Alias" as played by Jennifer Garner was named, uh, Alias.
#25341
Once this troper was using the brain hurting fanfic pairing generator and got a result that said: #QUOTE# Ozymandias ({{X-Men}})/ Mrs. Bennett (PrideAndPrejudice)
#25342
Said troper isn't exactly into superhero comics (only knowing what she knows about ''Watchmen'') from TVtropes, although she's pretty sure that there isn't someone called "Ozymandias" in X-men. If there is, than this troper DidNotDoTheResearch.
#25343
There is, but he's a fairly obscure minor henchman.
#25344
This troper's mother, a science and maths teacher, told me this story from when she briefly subbed for an English class the day they were watching ''Romeo+ Juliet''. One girl asked "Is this the one where Juliet dies at the end?"
#25345
This Troper saw an article in the local newspaper that was detailing a local event that featured casual art competitons. It had a picture that was captioned with "a sculpture of an alien", with the sculpture and the reference both in the picture. Said reference was an Armaldo. You can imagine that I laughed at this idiocy.
#25346
Well, you can't expect everyone to recognize every single Pokemon. It would have helped if the sculptor told the editor what it was.
#25347
This troper experienced a classic example recently, re-watching {{School of Rock}}. Another troper in the room made note of Miranda Cosgrove's appearance in the movie by saying; "Oh hey, isn't that {{iCarly?}}". It's not far off her name, but still...
#25348
This troper found the 1995 VHS trailer of ''{{Disney/Cinderella}}'' on YouTube, and noticed the summary read, "trailer of the movie "cinderella" from 80's." Someone in the comments explained to the uploader that the trailer actually came from 1995. The uploader responded that he/she said it was from the '80s because he/she wanted people to know it was advertising a ''Cinderella'' from the 1980s instead of one from 1995. I ''tried'' to tell that person the movie came out in the 19'''50'''s, but the summary still hasn't been corrected, nor has the uploader acknowledged the mistake.
#25349
This troper's high school newspaper, while publishing his review of BaldursGate II: Throne of Bhaal, had the headline "Baldur Highly Recommended," and had a ''character portrait'' as the screenshot, calling it "A dwarf from Baldur".
#25350
A promotional video for the 2010-11 lineup of theater tours at the Peoria Civic Center (Illinois) included a segment about CirqueDuSoleil's ''{{Dralion}}''. Alas, aside from the show logo all the promotional pictures used were from ''{{Alegria}}''.
#25351
Watching Ed Norton's Hulk film with my grandma when she suddenly busts out this gem: "...So when do the giant robots come in?"
#25352
This troper was on TV for the opening of one of the twilight movies. They asked me to spell my name on camera to make sure they got it right, as well as write it down. And I was the only one who they showed the name of on screen. Spelled wrong. Somehow.
#25353
This troper's mom sometimes refers to the Wii as the "WiiStation".
#25354
This Troper actually has a certain fondness for this, as I remember that very article. My friend used it as part of some daily news article thing for our elementary school class (if I remember correctly, the article was more specifically about the then-recent movie). At the time, I thought it looked weird and didn't look as cool as Pokemon. I now laugh patronizingly at my younger self, and am possessed by a strong urge to Gibbs Slap him in the back of the head for his ignorance.
#25355
At a trivia night, a question was asked about the group JustinTimberlake belonged to before his solo career. After the answer, *N Sync, was read out, the MC offered an extra point to the table of anyone willing to sing one of their songs into the microphone. In a particularly EpicFail, one volunteer sang out "Backstreet's Back Alright!" Needless to say, he did not get the point.
#25356
I maintain on my website support for all the tabletop roleplaying game settings I have either written for publication or use/have used for active campaigns. One of these settings was the town of Greendale (in an unnamed Eastern state in the USA), which was the home base of several ''TeenagersFromOuterSpace'' games, both online and not, during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Naturally, several high schools feature prominently in the action. Come the anthrax attacks in 2001, and the discovery that one of the envelopes had a bogus return address with "Greendale School" prominently in it, a veritable horde of journalists who had figured out how to use Google began calling me about the alleged role my game had in the anthrax attacks. One in particular, a Pulitzer-winning reporter for ''Newsweek'' who will remain nameless (Isikoff Cough), seemed bound and determined to misunderstand ''everything'' I told him in favor of ''anything'' that sounded more sensational. Nothing came of it, ultimately, but I hesitate to envision what might have appeared in print had he actually decided that he had enough for a story. According to industry contacts I have who spoke with him after I did, he could not even wrap his head around the idea of roleplaying game that wasn't computer-based. As a footnote, I was eventually interviewed by the FBI about the possible anthrax connection -- ''three years later''. The agents admitted they were simply cleaning up a few low priority "loose ends" in the investigation. But even they demonstrated some fundamental misconceptions and more than a little confusion about what was actually going on with the game (including some kind of strange idea that there was something in the game where if a player got a high enough level, he became ''me''). I did my best to clarify matters, and I haven't heard from them since.
#25357
While our teacher was going on about how DigitalPiracyIsEvil and downloading anything off the internet is illegal, I had the gall to ask "What about if it's {{freeware}}?" Needless to say, after a good couple of minutes of explanation and arguments, she replied, "Well, whatever this 'freeware' thing is, it's illegal too." '''What.''' For a somewhat more humorous example, my friend constantly confuses certain series, leading to such gems as StarTrek Galactica and bizzarely, ''Eve{{Flyff}}{{Pong}
#25358
This Troper had this overheard from a mother exiting {{The Simpsons}} Ride at Universal. ->"You Survived The Krusty Krab, why won't you ride the big coaster?"
#25359
There was some terrible movie from the 80's which had a scene where a guy brings gun to his workplace and starts shooting. One of the characters says something like "he's got an Uzi!" The problem is that the shooter is using a small automatic pistol. Even if you don't know anything about guns, most people understand that the Uzi is a stereotypical "machine gun" (actually it's a submachine gun), you know, a relatively large, fully automatic weapon. It's definitely not a small handgun like the one shown in the scene. God damn, people in the 80's were stupid.
#25360
Something like that happened in class last year. The teacher showed us a picture of a guy with what was obviously a rocket-launcher, yet kept referring to it as a Kalashnikov. *sigh*
#25361
That's the kind of thing that the "goofs" section of imdb refers to as "Errors made by characters" - which means that one could give the writers the benefit of the doubt and assume ''they'' know better, but decided to portray the character as knowing nothing about firearms.
#25362
On a message board I used to frequent, someone once commented that the singer from The Postal Service and the singer from Death Cab For Cutie sound so much alike that they wouldn't be surprised if it came out that they were secretly the same person. They apparently weren't joking. Ben Gibbard is the vocalist for both groups.
#25363
This troper's father refers to all anime as "Narutu" until told otherwise and calls all forms of energy attacks "Kamiyamiya"...This troper doesn't correct him anymore.
#25364
Animated Views has so many of these it's not even funny. Examples I can remember right now include an assumption that ''RudolphTheRedNosedReindeer'' began airing with "Fame and Fortune" instead of "We're a Couple of Misfits" in 1998 as opposed to 1965 (1998 is actually the year "We're a Couple of Misfits" '''returned''' to ''Rudolph'', a fact the reviewer could have confirmed simply by watching the previous year's broadcast!), a lament that the "Recommended Features" box on the ''ToyStory3'' Blu-Ray does not include a link to ''Day and Night'' even though the link is randomized, and clearly ''does'' lead to that short several times on my copy, and an assumption that in the ''{{Watchmen}}'' graphic novel, Dr. Manhattan and the squid were the same being (a site devoted to animation probably shouldn't review ''{{Film/Watchmen}}'' in the first place!). Unfortunately, other than DVD Verdict, Ultimate Disney/[=DVDizzy=], and Blu-Ray.com, I don't know where else to find home video reviews that go into so much depth about bonus features.
#25365
My mom calls the DS a "Gameboy", and I have to correct her all the time.
#25366
Also, all Mon are Pokémon to her.
#25367
This troper initially called the DS "Gameboy Advance DS", but shortened it to "DS" because it wasn't a mouthful.
#25368
I remember the party that was held at the end of elementary school, for the kids and their parents. We also has a quiz, and one of the pages were "Name the characters/series". One of the pictures were Pokémon, and I was pleasantly surprised to see they had actually chose somewhat obscure 3rd gen Pokémon(I remember Exploud being there) and not just Pikachu and possibly a few other "well-known" Gen 1 Pokés(Bulbasaur, Charizard, Meowth ect.) After I had taken the test, I came across someone else's answers[heh] and 1. On Pokémon, they wrote "Digimon"(somewhat justified in that you can't expect everyone to know about the new Pokémon, and hey - at least they got the Mon part right) and 2. they had written it as "Diggemon". ...Okay, what.
#25369
The local newspaper in my old town was notorious for making obvious mistakes, especially mispelling peoples names, Once they accidentally printed an article that referred to a man not by his name, but by the name of his brother, who had died.
#25370
After an understandably angry/upset call from the family They printed an apology the next week, in which they made '''''the exact same mistake'''''.
#25371
The next weekAfter another call from the family they printed an apology, apologising for the mistake they made in the apology the week before.
#25372
Did they get it wrong in that apology?
#25373
I was playing with my NintendoDS at a Taco Bell, when one dude was asking if what I was playing was an NES. Seriously, for how long has this guy lived in his cave?
#25374
This troper checked out a book at her library about Satoshi Tajiri, creator of {{Pokemon}} that, while correctly listing facts about the man himself, captions nearly every image wrong. First off is the caption calling Pokemon a "computer game" and claiming that as of 2009 there are only 3 Pokemon films. Another picture of two boys watching the show is incorrectly captioned as them "playing the game in their living room," and yet another picture showing a display of the trading card game says that it is a display for the new Pokemon game for the Wii. Also it claims that Diamond and Pearl was released in 2004. ...Yeah.
#25375
When I was in the 5th grade, my school did a play about famous Georgians. The kid who played Deforest Kelley wore a red shirt and did the "Live Long and Prosper" sign.
#25376
one more memorable did not do the research/cowboy bebop at his computer moments I overheard was when I saw Fellowship of the Ring in the theater when the credits rolled an older couple in their 60's loudly proclaimed "what's this 'to be continiued' crap? this is an outrage we paid 40 dollars for these tickets! (movie tickets are 8 dollars a piece) and they wont even show the whole movie?"
#25377
One of this troper's cousins called the first Xbox "a big Game Boy." Another claimed he couldn't play Game Boy Color games...on a Game Boy Color.
#25378
My dad thinks the main character of Digimon is ''called'' Digimon. He randomly brought this up even though I haven't watched anything Digimon related since 2005.
#25379
A "WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire" board game we have, has as one of the questions: "What video game stars Ash and Pikachu?"(a. Pokémon, B. Mario Bros, c. Tomb Raider, d. Legend of Zelda) The problem is, of course, that there is no "Ash" in the games - the main character's name is Red, who is a completely different character. And unless you have Yellow(where you don't really ''have'' to use Pikachu anyway), Pikachu also doesn't have any bigger role in the game than that of any other Pokémon. Instant facepalm.
#25380
This is mainly caused by gameshows (and pretty much most non-fans) not knowing about canon. Ash is notorious. Best know under Mario, more than one canon. CanonForeigner is not a good trope to have on your character page. Woah, too much detail.
#25381
I've got two atrocious ones:
#25382
Someone in my art claas was talking about The Land Before Time and brought up the fact that they had a coloring page of Petrie. Turns out it was a picture of Ducky. Normally I wouldn't care, except, well, Ducky's VA was kinda murdered as a child, so I responded with a loud, annoyed "THAT'S DUCKY!". In hindsight, maybe not the best way to react.
#25383
The classic Link=Zelda fail, but with a few twists. When my brother wore an OOT-inspired Link costume for Halloween long ago he was referred to as Peter Pan. When I wore a Twilight Princess inspired Link costume for one of my finals there was a devide in opinion over who I was: Teachers tended to think I was Robin Hood while fellow students almost all agreed I was dressed as "Zelda". Got really bad when I had to explain to a girl who Link is and the differences between him and Zelda and she STILL called me Zelda twice.
#25384
Alot of these tales seem to be about troper's mothers. My Mum is actually very good at averting this trope. Thanks to much conversation with me when I was younger, she can name most of then Gen 1 Pokémon and some of the Gen 2s and a small amount of Gen 3s. She only knows Munchlax from Gen 4 and nothing from Gen 5. (Although she sometimes mixes up Munchlax and Snorlax, despite saying she likes Snorlax the best.) She never misnames any of my mangas (even repeatedly reminds me to straighten out my Death Note wallscroll) She even told me she saw Pineco in a dream once, I didn't even know she knew of it by name. One example of the trope is that she only knows Patamon as a Digimon, so if I show her Lopmon or any other cute little Digimon, she'll ask if it's Patamon. But otherwise, I've taught her well!
#25385
When I was a teenager, I found a Boba Fett helmet for sale somewhere. My dad was with me, and asked if it was the head of a Darsek (translation: Dalek).
#25386
This comparion between Digimon, Pokemon, and DungeonsAndDragons cartoon. Bad guys sexually attractive? Pokemon: YES Digimon: NO DungeonsAndDragons: NO. Hello, Ladydevimon here.
#25387
I think that's just a bad case of Slash Goggles.
#25388
I saw an article about comics claiming that "Manhwa are comics published online..." No, manhwa are Korean comics, what you're thinking of is webcomics.
#25389
One of my friends asked me about ''300'', even though I hadn't seen it yet, asking if it was a "sexist dudefest" like she'd heard. Apparently anything masculine is sexist in her opinion now. I just told her she'd get to see a lot of men wearing practically nothing.
#25390
This troper's brother remembers hearing someone refer to Charmander as a Digipoke.
#25391
This troper has also encountered numerous Pokemon-related errors: referring to Pokemon as 'red guy' or 'blue guy', calling Pokemon moves 'cheat codes', acting like there is only one Pikachu in existence and worst of all, claiming that Pikachu is a Legendary Pokemon.
#25392
I have two examples related to Kinect: the first one was a lecture that tangentially referred to it as "Natal" long after the accessory's real name had been announced. The second one was a college professor talking about how "there was going to be a new videogame released called the "Xbox 360" where you control virtual avatars with your limbs". Firstly, what he's actually talking about is Kinect, which is an accessory to the 360. Secondly, Kinect had been released for quite a few months already, with the 360 itself having been out since 2005. Worse mistakes have been made, but as a huge videogame nerd, it was mildly annoying.
#25393
A friend once posted on Facebook: "My dad asked me something about "the yellow one" from some game... turns out he was talking about Mario."
