This troper was running across town, visiting the third recruiter to figure out opportunities in the US Military. He was really angry about having to speed around town to find an open recruiter, and wondered why the hell he was. Then he realized: It's the first thing I've done to control my life ever. He had a big smile on his face that day.
#51202
Wait, what? Joining the military, becoming the equivalent of a {{Mook}} and having your morals and sanity warped is controlling your life?
#51203
Wait, what? Joining the military means having your morals and sanity warped?
#51204
...A little. A normal person is going to hesitate to do things that a soldier ''needs'' to do--killing would top this list in most people's minds, but honestly, that moment where you see someone's hand get shot off and you hesitate for a second or two? You're dead now. Or someone on your team is.
#51205
Exactly. A moral person wouldn't kill people unless they had to and wouldn't go LOOKING for people to kill. As for the sanity part, PTSD and other things.
#51206
But wasn't every BigBad once a {{Mook}}?
#51207
No, not always. But sometimes. Not that that's a good thing.
#51208
Thanks for being
Jerk Asses, tropers. Nice to know that EVERY SOLDIER EVER is a psychotic brainless killing machine.
#51209
And we Finnish have an unwritten rule in the Army: Do NOT leave your friends and fellow finns behind. Get them to safety at all costs. And you call us mindless killers?
#51210
This troper thinks that he means that, since he chose to join the military in the first place, and is striving to do his best, that that's why he's in control of his life.
#51212
The TroperTales page for HeroicBSOD starts with an incomplete sentence and ends with "Sorry, where was I?" The more examples are put in, the longer the gap gets. So the more Heroic BSODs people have, the longer the BSOD of the page is!
#51213
This troper has a pet {{Jerkass}} that constantly tells him things like "GET THAT PUSSY!" in spite of the fact that, from this troper's view, troper is more of a loser than
Shinji Ikari. Then this troper realized that his behavior towards a lot of women can be described entirely with ChivalrousPervert, and the ones that don't openly hate him for other reasons are perfectly fine with that and may hold a romantic interest in him. {{Jerkass}} seems like less of a {{Jerkass}} and more of a CaptainObvious now.
#51214
This trooper had some fridge brilliance on himself when he decided to name his Goth charter
Violet Raven
#51215
This different troper had FridgeBrilliance in regard to your entry. At first I thought you misspelled "character" as "charter." Then,
I found out that there is a font called Charter that is also listed on the same page as the font Franklin Gothic! Clearly, this was a sly obscure reference to this fact!
#51216
This troper's Nakama tried to plan a surprise birthday party for one of us. Things were planned and announced, but the day came and went and no one had managed to get anything more done, either due to poor planning or forgetting. The birthday girl in question?
The one who organizes everything.
#51217
My friend posted this on facebook: "Don't listen to facebook statuses. They're written by idiots and always lie to you." I originally just thought that it was him calling himself an idiot again, then I remembered what exactly this sentence was and realised that it's a logic paradox, not a self critique.

This English troper is a quarter Irish from his mother's side. He hasn't really paid that part of his heritage much heed, though he did start listening to ThePogues recently. Nobody really paid that much attention either. However, my grandmother seemed pleased that I was listening to an Irish band... I couldn't quite figure out why. It wasn't as if she listened to that sort of thing herself. Then I remembered that my grandad, her husband, the man she loved and raised a child with, who's been dead for thirty years, was Irish... So
Yeah.

This troper was filling out a housing application for a roommate this fall. One of the questions was "Would you be willing to room with a gay, lesbian, or transgender person?" His automatic answer was yes and he didn't think about it until he realized that there was almost no way the housing department would know whether someone was gay or lesbian. In fact, they could only have put that question there to find out if the person would be okay rooming with a transgender person. A roundabout question yielding the answer they need, without potentially outing someone who needs to keep their transgender status a secret later on.
#51220
I'm sorry, but what?
#51221
FridgeLogic: I'm sure there are plenty of straight/bisexual/asexual people who wouldn't mind rooming with gays, lesbians, or transgender people. Basically, I'm ~guessing~ that the original poster was arguing that asking whether someone is ''okay'' with rooming with a gay or lesbian person is a sort of
third option between directly asking whether someone is gay or lesbian (which may not be "legal") and potentially creeping out people who wouldn't want to room with gays or lesbians.
#51222
No, what the original poster meant was this: The housing department had a transgendered person that needed a roommate. But since they can't ask "Are you okay with rooming with a transgendered person" (it might out the transgendered person somehow) they instead asked about transgendered people ''and'' gays ''and'' lesbians, making it seem like they were asking about hypothetical situations, when they were actually investigating a specific case.
#51223
While I understand what the original troper was getting at (assuming it was what the four-bullet poster directly above me said), there ''are'' places (including and especially in the U.S.) where, while one cannot actually be contractually "
asked" about sexual orientation in case of discrimination, it's legal or even required for any openly gay or (
in some places) bisexual people to be placed in rooming where their roommate is aware of their sexuality. This is (
in some places only supposedly) both to keep a pitiable homophobe from having to share a room with an emotionally disturbing gay/bi person and to keep a pitiable gay/bi person from having to share a room with a dangerous homophobe. Assuming the original poster is accurately versed in the relevant laws and rules governing the area where the housing was, and the housing committee didn't word the question in such a way just to be as thorough as possible, their interpretation has a good chance of being correct anyway.

I was planning out a MegaCrossover Fanfic, and was trying to decide on a
"Reveal" for the source of
HaruhiSuzumiya's powers, as well as a way to add the godess Inazami
(otherwise known as the ManBehindTheMan of Persona4) to the cast for the GrandFinale. I considered making Haruhi a mortal incarnation of the godess Ameratsu. Realizing that I knew next to nothing about Japanese mythology, I looked up Ameratsu on Wikipedia, and it said that that (at least in some versions of the story) Ameratsu was the daugter of Izinami and Izinagi.

Greatest discovery of my life: Christmas presents are brick jokes.
#51226
So are year book quotes, at least if you use them to make private jokes that inevitably won't even make sense to you anymore by the time the yearbook's actually out.
#51227
This troper is constantly discovering fonts of inspiration that she didn't notice she'd been drawing from. And also even stuff like ''Literature/{{Twilight}}''
can make good points. Finally, and probably most importantly:
they honestly didn't understand, and so saw no reason to change their behavior.
#51228
This troper often gets FridgeBrilliance with badly written works (coughcoughTwilightcoughcough) where there are things which actually do make sense - the writer just wasn't good enough to communicate that. Case in point: the other boys' fascination with Bella. Meyer gives a good explanation (basically, she's something new and different) but it comes off as just one more facet of the MarySue which is Bella. In the hands of another author, this could have worked.

A bartender is someone who tends to a bar.
#51230
This Troper had just read
"Ode to Minions" and started to wonder why they had said "Dodongo disliked smoke". Then she remembered something - in the earlier games, you had to defeat them with Bombs. Bombs cause a lot of smoke.
#51231
There's more to it (same Troper) - why was that ReDead playing the taxes (aside from making them sympathetic)? They were alive once, you know...
#51232
Me again. In the end, a very famous "villain" turns out to be singing from personal experience. So why does he ask the plumbers who are listening to put their hats on their hearts if they aren't in the crowd in the first place? Considering that they enjoy
having races against one another in a friendly way, it becomes even weirder, doesn't it? Well... would YOU go listening to a song (aside from those with lots of screaming, but this is more peaceful) sung by someone who has that monstrous voice that he has in canon? It seems plausible that he wanted to let somebody dub it so it could become popular, making the Bros. guilty, and wanted to see if his minions liked it.

In Texas, American and Texan history are taught as separate grade school courses. When this troper was in fourth grade, the teacher started the Texas History unit by asking the class "Did we win the Battle of the Alamo?" Every student but one answered 'no.' Years later, I realized that he had answered 'Yes' ''because he was Mexican.''

In several places in the US it was legal for landlords to refuse to rent property to certain people based on their race, but illegal to advertise that fact. (i.e. you can't post an ad that says "white people only".) So if a landlord didn't want to rent to a racial minority, he'd have to tell the prospective tenant that ''to his face''.
#51237
This Troper was skimming through the Troper Tales list. While scanning through the alphabetically categorized section,he realized something funny.Specifically between the placement of The CompleteMonster page and TheMessiah page.In order to go to the CompleteMonster page, you have to go down, but to get to TheMessiah page you have to go up.I know its not symbolism, but it was funny already to me,because CompleteMonster is on the left, and TheMessiah is on the right.

This troper has a "Kids Celebrate America" CD, which she enjoyed when she was five (see: IReadItForTheArticles.) But she didn't really think it was special or anything (except as entertainment) and didn't know who were behind
Hero,
Imagine, America, or
Yesterday. Then she got interested in JohnLennon after seeing how much he had in common with-don't kill me for this-KanyeWest. She found the CD Halloween 2010 and decided to listen to it after remembering that John had a song on that CD...it was like being five all over again.
Some moments are definitely worth treasuring. Those songs have been classics ever since. I definitely should've valued my childhood more.

I'm well aware of and annoyed by the bursts of insanity that are a characteristic of
my preferred fandom, sometimes on this very wiki. Being both a
Maiko shipper and someone who greatly enjoyed the third season, I have quite a lot of haterade to endure from the majority of fans. I just realized why a lot of people deride the third season (''allegedly'' for being full of "episodic filler"), when I absolutely love it: ''It's got Maiko in like every other episode and they're all just butthurt Zutarians.'' Ahh, fandom. Can't live with you, can't live without you...

I love {{Goldfrapp}} a lot. Mainly, I love the songs from their middle three albums (''Black Cherry'', ''Supernature'' and ''Seventh Tree''), though I adore ''Felt Mountain'' and don't mind ''Head First''. But I realised a while ago that I love ''Felt Mountain'' a lot more than I thought I did, and then I started wondering why, given that the music is very trippy and the lyrics are almost completely incomprehensible- and then I realised, that's exactly why I love it- the music's perfect for relaxing, and incomprehensible lyrics make me laugh.

This troper was going about every day life as it should-boring and normal-when this troper suddenly realized what song this troper was listening to. A Korean pop song by a certain nine-poepled girl group. This troper realized the lyrics were brilliant. Then this troper suddenly felt like throwing up.

This troper's mother has a plant growing on a plastic cup just on the side of the kitchen's sink. Actually, it's not a plant at all. It's just a sad little leaf with a long green branch that keeps being alive because the cup is filled with water. This troper
just noticed this night after the plant has been there for '''2 years''' that the cup is actually a promotional cup for {{WALL-E}}.

I felt pretty giddy seeing
Rapunzel and Eugene added to the "So Close" segment of California Adventure's World of Color. The second time watched the clip, I realized they came in on the line, "almost believing this one's not pretend." I suddenly remembered Mother Gothel warning Rapunzel that Eugene might not really love her, and ultimately being proven wrong.

This troper has been told by my friends that I yell whenever I talk to them, but told I talk quitely to people like my parents, teachers, and the adults around me.At first I was confused why I yell at my friends instead of talking and then it hit me-My friends are just my friends.I talk quietly and respectfully to my parents, teachers, and the adults around me because there the authoritive figures in my life. While I'm aware that they should have my respect, subconsicously I don't respect them because they have no authority over me once so ever. They can't control my actions or punish me for mouthing off.Though I do use an outside voice on them,I cherish them and am now talking calmy upon hitting realization of this fact.

Years and years ago, this troper used to go to after school care, not a bad place, but there were a few hearing impaired children attending from another nearby school, the attendants there had some volunteer students, troper included, learn sign language to help them around a bit (mainly to alert them to afternoon snacks, playground time, et cetera.), and to help us practice gave us a song to sign to. Around a month ago, brilliance set in when the song came around on the radio again, it was Ronan Keating's "When You Say Nothing at All" key lyrics being "You say it best, when you say nothing at all..."

When I first started using [=MacOS=] and saw that inactive apps' dock icons bounce when they want your attention, I assumed it was just a cutesy thing the designer came up with. Years later, I observed someone else's Mac that had been set to auto-hide the dock. The icons were bouncing ''into view'' from below the bottom edge of the screen, so you can still see them when the dock is hidden.
