This Troper has done this with quite a few games, including:

The original Tetris. I played for 2 or 3 days, but thankfully was good enough about it to leave the game paused for the night and get back to playing the next morning.

Pokemon Fire Red. Just... Pokemon Fire Red.

Rampage. Yes, Rampage. I was trying to figure out if it would eventually end if I played long enough.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I had to use Game Genie codes, but I won... 4 times.

Final Fantasy 1. The damn battle music kept getting stuck in my head. And some nights, as I was just going to head for bed at whatever-it-was AM, I would listen closely only to find that I had left the game running in some emulator, and it was still playing music.

Not as bad an example - Sonic Advance. I would play on Time Attack until my fingers started to really hurt.

...And one of the few reasons that I haven't done this with Sonic Adventure DX is that for some reason, the music that plays in the Mystic Ruins makes me hungry.

Games that ate my soul:

FinalFantasyTactics, to the point where I was hearing the pre-battle setup screen music every time I saw a tiled floor.

MapleStory, before the LevelGrinding got to me. Then I discovered custom servers that give 25x experience, and offer a "Rebirth" feature where you can start over at level 1 with the stats and abilities you accumulated...it still took forever to to get past that first 200 levels worth of experience, so I gave up.

NipponIchi games. I've logged over 100 hours EACH in {{Disgaea}}, Disgaea2, MakaiKingdom (TWICE, because I wasn't happy with how I built my team the first time and started over on a new save), and PhantomBrave (ditto). The only thing that stopped me from doing so in LaPucelle was the lack of NewGamePlus.

TeamFortress2, especially Payload. I can spend hours playing the same map over and over again without getting bored. Paradoxically, I find it much more fun and challenging when the two teams are evenly matched and play down to the wire rather than when my team is rolling over the other.

I wonder who else had trouble when it comes to not playing ''{{Spelunky}}''?

I beat Pokemon [=HeartGold=] in one day. All sixteen gyms, and the Elite Four, and Silver. This was after I had logged over 300 hours in my copy of Diamond. And I'm not even going to get started on my {{Yu-Gi-Oh}} game addiction.

Ha. I have over 650 hours logged on Diamond, completed the national dex within six months of getting the game, and have apparently made over 1000 trades on the GTS.

Back around Christmas of '97, when this troper was hypnotized by FinalFantasyVII, he got to the point where he said to himself, "If I get to sleep ''immediately'', then start the game up the INSTANT I wake up, it'll be like I never turned it off! Score!"

This troper remembers one night in which he pulled an all nighter completely by accident after playing The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of seasons for too long.

Played through {{Fallout}} in one night and only noticed when he saw the sun was up after killing the Master and he'd started after dinner. Admittedly, not a first run.

Played {{Lunar}}: Silver Star Story Complete overnight, and maybe Eternal Blue Complete once, too. Memory's a bit fuzzy.

Caesar III and {{X-COM}} have also eaten significant chunks of entire days/nights.

This Troper is usually pretty reasonable when it comes to this.

After a few days of ''SystemShock 2'', I went all the way and spent the entire evening, up to midnight, to finish the game. School tomorrow? Who cares - thankfully it's the end of year and nothing is really being taught anymore.

This Troper would like to state that ''DwarfFortress'' nearly caused him to be late to a midterm. Fortunately he had studied before learning of that free time waster's existence, so his grade was a B.

This troper was working on a multi-threaded program for a computer science class and just finished the debugging at midnight. He went to bed and spent the next six hours dreaming about sitting at the computer and coding, and woke up like he never slept to begin with. He was pretty irritable the following day. The assignment passed by his partner's standards and made up for the pain. This actually seems to be quite common for programmers, although it only happens to this troper if he's stressed about the assignment.

I have a rule in place for just this situation: If I have to be ANYWHERE that day I won't play any game with an engaging story.

For This Troper, it's PuyoPuyo. Trying to find the best way to make chains... figuring how to make an all clear of that fever puzzle... finishing every single story.... wait, it's 1:00 am already!? Last time I checked, it was 10:30 am!

Similarly, ''Civ II'''s RecycledInSpace sequel SidMeiersAlphaCentauri had an option like that ''after you've won the game'': you receive a victory message, and the options "Good! I'm done! Now go away!" and "Wait, lemme play just a couple more turns..." While we're on the topic, it is one of only five games this troper has played from noon to midnight, and the only one he's played all night long.

This troper always considered ''Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri'' as the worst offender in this category. Not only was it a very good Civ iteration, but when you tried to exit the game, on top of the usual ''Are you sure ? yes/no'' window the game advisor's voice would say "Please don't go ! The drones need you, they ''look up'' to you..." in a disturbingly desperate tone which made it quite hard to quit without feeling bad about it.

This troper never had an issue with that dialogue screen and thought it was amusing. Quite frankly, out of all the Civ games, this troper would like to note that one is most prone to the Tetris effect in Alpha Centauri, since it's essentially the best Civ game ever.

This troper's BoyScout troop took this trope UpToEleven with an annual "lock-in". I caught them all. You get a f*** ing certificate. But still I am obssesed with the breeding, and metagaming that comes with the pokemon franchise.

483 hours on Diamond (as of February 2010). I actually spend hours on training my Pokémon. (I'm not a Stop Having Fun Guy by the way. My Pokémon will most likely never reach metagamers' standards) And I am still missing 12 Pokémon. I've probably spent over 1,000 hours on all my Pokémon games combined. And yes, I do dream about Pokémon.

Forget just catching them all. The newer games include all sorts of distractions, like Contests (talent competitions as opposed to battles) and the Battle Tower (endurance challenges), in addition to the classic SelfImposedChallenge of raising a pokemon to Level 100. If you really want to drive yourself nuts, try to get a pokemon with maximum stats and moves - it involves training in specific areas of the map, use of certain stat-boosting items, and large amounts of HotSkittyOnWailordAction to breed one with the best potential in the first place.

Just beating the game became a near obsession when Diamond and Pearl came out last year. Every waking hour was spent on that game, and some sleep was lost. Every once in a while I'd look up and remember I was a 20-something PLAYING POKEMONS.

''NeverwinterNights'' and ''StarWars: KnightsOfTheOldRepublic'' both do this in spades, and for the same reason: Play the game. Beat the game. Do it again with a different class/alignment/sex/race for your character. Do it again with another combination. And again.

''SuperSmashBrosMelee''. "Alright, this'll be my last match for tonight...OK, one more...Dammit, it's 3 AM."

''MassEffect'': I have to save the galaxy! But first, I have to: read every Codex entry, find every mineral, find every Prothean data disc, find every Asari writing, kill some cultists and drive around in the Mako. And maybe kill some space-monkeys.

Same with this troper, but with Mass Effect 2. I have played through the game at least 5 times.

Pick ''any'' version of ''GeometryWars''. ''Grid Wars'', for example, is currently the official game of the telecommunications major at the ITESO, with ''everyone'' capable of reaching scores well over the 600,000!

Once I got SuperMarioGalaxy2, I played the game for nearly nine hours STRAIGHT only taking a break to eat lunch.

The day this troper got ''KingdomHearts 2'' she started playing late at night and made it through the prologue in one sitting, no harm done. She learned much later that said prologue was ''five hours long''.

This troper rented it once and managed to play it for just less than 24 hours... in about 3 days... playing it until ''4:30 AM''.

This troper was at a sleepover at a friend's house and got her hand on this game. At 12am. And played through the entire prologue before charging into the room where everyone else was sleeping in the very early morning to demand an answer to the question of WHERE THE HELL DID ROXAS GOOOOOO-

Started playing this game the day before, and got through the prologue no problem. The next day, I started playing at about 8 in the morning, and by 1am I was looking around asking, "Where did the sun go?" To make matters worse, I didn't even get that far into the game after all that time.

This troper is constantly affected by this, but seems to remember a certain issue of Nintendo Power actually addressing this, where a subscriber mailed in saying that their own TEACHER was actually late to class because he was playing VideoGame/PaperMario. It consumes us all, folks...

This troper had beat ''The Witcher'' in less than one week, sleeping about 16 hours total during those six days and sacrificing all kinds of other activities.

The Tales games have this effect on me. When I first got ''TalesOfSymphonia'', I literally did ''nothing'' for the two weeks afterward except play the game, only getting up to eat and sleep. It was summer, I was allowed, but jeez my father was pissed that I was gaming on his TV from 8 AM to 10 PM every day for two weeks. Several years later, I picked up ''TalesOfTheAbyss'', after letting it hang for about six months, finally started to get into it again when my friends told me it gets better - wait a minute, it's November 15? Wasn't it October 20-ish yesterday? I was a ''little'' more self-aware when I played ''TalesOfVesperia'', and even let the game drop after I beat the final boss, but then the new semester started and I began my second playthrough...It's now about six weeks into the semester and I have literally played ''no other game'', I've been trying to do all the sidequests and missable things there is to do, of which there's a ton.

This troper is a Facebook frequenter. Facebook + Hanjie Puzzle (a Picross application) = hey guys where'd the time go.

This troper played ''FinalFantasyVIII'' a few years ago and doesn't remember getting especially hooked, so was perhaps a bit too complacent when it came to replaying it. It has now taken over his life.

Columns. That old puzzle game for the Sega Genesis? This troper still plays that for hours on end, with a six hour marathon session holding the record so far. We're not even gonna get into his SMAC sessions...

Halo Wars for this troper. I owned the game for a grand total of 3 days before I got the achievement "24 Hours of Quality" gotten for playing the game for 24 hours. ''During a school week!'' However, now the event has repeated itself with Halo 3: ODST and Battlefield 2142(again). This troper is also avoiding reactivating his EVE Online account for fear that it will jump on the bandwagon.

This troper recently bought a Street Fighter IV Fighting Stick Tournament Edition, and thanks to it, he is once again on a 2D shooter binge.

This troper is very glad his Vista laptop tends to suffer errors after about 20 minutes (give or take) of ''IWannaBeTheGuy'', because it means he gets a reminder to stop and eat. (666 deaths and counting!)

This troper keeps taking study breaks to play ''Mushihime-sama Futari''. Sometimes he'll be up at 4 in the morning playing [[strike:two five playthroughs of it.

For this troper, FlightGear (an open-source flight simulation game). (Un)fortunately, it doesn't work correctly on his laptop.

How about food? Eating certain kinds of snack chips is quite addicting.

This troper Can't play through KnightsOfTheOldRepublic 2 without completing a full arc every night. This includes Perargus and the beggining of the Telos arc, the entire Telos arc, Dxun and Onderon, Nar Shadaa, etc. All of these take 3-4 hours to complete, with the exception of Nar Shadaa, which takes over 5 hours. I never managed to beat that before 3 in the morning.

Sorry, but it's ''VideoGame/SuperPaperMario'' for this troper. When I was younger, it was ''GrandTheftAuto'' and ''{{Counterstrike}}''. I'm still going for ''{{Sims}}'' (preferably 2), though.

Please please tell me I'm not the only one who had 20 hours on Pokémon [=HeartGold=] after 1 day the game was out. Or the fact I beat it in 3 days.

This Troper spent almost one hundred hours on Heart Gold in the first month it was availible. Considering that I didn't play it for about a third of those days, I averaged out under 5 hours each day I played. (and it looks like I'll double my hours by summer) This Troper is not the only one that kept his Pokéwalker on him everyday since it released, right?

I put it on my dog. Oh and over the summer I'm gonna make an attempt to go BeyondTheImpossible and catch every pokemon in regular AND shiny forms with gender differences in both (if they have any) and own them all at the same time. Yeah I'm nuts but it will have EPIC bragging rights. I'm gonna make a blog of it, or a list if anyone wants to keep track.

This troper refuses to go anywhere without hers, to the point of attempting a VictoriasSecretCompartment when wearing a dress. Half of her computer science class brings theirs to school daily. This troper remembers finishing the first two parts of ''Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn'' in the same day. She also got all the way to Part 3 Ch. 5, but by then her brain was very, very scrambled.

This troper (Ronfar) can top all of that. He deliberately skipped a (midterm) exam in college so he could play Final Fantasy X. (And he passed the course anyway!)

This troper is worse, especially in WarioWare DIY as he's unable to stop once he gets a scatterbrained idea for a microgame, and WILL NOT SLEEP TIL IT GETS COMPLETED AND SHIPPED TO THE GAME'S STORE. Seriously, it's like 2 AM and he just got an idea involving a mermaid. Even the most over-the-top ideas like a chicken in space NEED to be done.

This troper has a few, but the best example is probably my obsession with puzzle quest, and my addiction to {{Knights in the nightmare}}. More then once I've stopped a play session only to find that I have been strengthening my equipment for over an hour.

Seriously, who hasn't tried to make every possible character ever on that thing, as well as just throwing random accessories together to see what a character with them would look like? If I still had my old computer, the files of characters made with that would surely indicate how addicted I am.

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days is REALLY addicting to this troper. "Just one more mission..." is basically her catchphrase. Also, Pokemon Ruby. This troper beat the game in 2 days. Her party pokemon were all at level 55 when she defeated Steven.

Damn, you beat me by a mile!

In the first approximately thirty-two hours after my purchase of JadeEmpire, I'd completed a playthrough with most of the sidequests completed. These days, my addiction of choice is MassEffect, which have resulted in many a lost night.

This troper's earliest, personal memory of this trope is playing ''LegendOfDragoon'', Disc 2, and trying to navigate the anti-gravity area. I look at the clock and it's 3AM. I look a little while later after some battles and it's past 5AM. I only stopped because I felt an earthquake and finally got to save point. Other games that have done this to me are the .hack games (so many hours spent on those sidequests), Sonic Adventure 2 (over 300 hours and those dang, adorable Chaos), SkiesOfArcadia (so many battles and sidequests had me miss my favorite anime at the time), and the Sonic Mega Collection (unlocking all of those games and finishing when the sun came up).

Just throwing this out there, but my own mother also did this trope when I was a kid (probably why I was okay with playing LoD until sunrise). ''VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG'', ''PokemonStadium'', and ''EternalDarkness'' are just a few examples of what I stayed up watching (passing out with the latter and waking up to the system still being on), although only SMRPG had us both up at sunrise when trying to go through those six fricking doors at Bowser's Keep. "Just one more try, just one more try..."

This troper was very happy when the first three ''AceAttorney'' games were released on WiiWare. I would get into investigating, and then I had to go to court, and then I found another suspect, and then...when was the last time I blinked? Why am I so hungry?

This troper and her friends have a standing joke that whenever you're playing Pokemon, something important will always demand your attention right as you enter a battle, and you haven't saved in a while. Cue lots of nostalgia-inducing "I can't stop Mom! I'm in the middle of a battle!"

This troper has grown to mostly avert it, but whenever he sees a logic puzzle, be it picross, minesweeper, spider solitaire, sudoku, grid puzzles, etc. up for grabs, he cannot combat the urge to milk it until there is nothing left. No matter how many hours of productivity he's losing for it. He's solved roughly 2500 puzzles of various kinds in about a year. the guy who mentioned Hanjie: [[SarcasmMode thanks for that!]]

This troper gets very easily addicted to games. A new Pokémon game will easily keep this troper occupied for months. GottaCatchEmAll, you know? On top of that, Mario, Sonic, and puzzle games in general (especially {{Tetris}}) also keep this troper busy.

This troper got Pokemon Platinum yesterday. The only reason she has managed to pull herself away is because if she plays it too long she gets a headache and a crick in her neck, and at some point the pain begins to outweigh the fun.

Tropers/{{Excel-2011}}. What's the worst time to start playing ''{{Disgaea}}''? night before the start of school. Suffice to say that I nearly gagged when the trope was lampshaded in the start of chapter 7.

When I started playing {{Psychonauts}} again, nobody watched TV for two days.

One of this troper's English teachers had a piece of software called My Skills Tutor, which, as it turns out, was a GrammarNazi on LSD. He even mentioned this trope by name when the class realised that it had too many lessons. Turns out, that was averted because My Skills Tutor was a grindy piece of arse with 6 modules and 30 incoherent lessons per module that I didn't want to do but did so anyway. It was so dead boring that my friend just blew it, subverting his end of the trope. Another thing; it was too American, as it won't accept "realise;" it'd have to be "realize."

Doubly subverted with my current English teacher's system; this time, a PB Works wiki. Despite the fact that the questions themselves were many times incoherent, e.g. "How do people respond to the 'rat-trap' theory of life?" we give them enough examples to help us troll his forums.

I have owned Dragon Quest IX for about a month. I have played over 168 hours.

This troper obsesses over things easily and falls into repetitive habits just as quickly. Pokemon is a killer. As is pretty much any JRPG; collecting stuff, levelling up, right down to memorised button-pressing for particular enemy combinations and set routes through levels (thinking of Etrian Odyssey, the latter is at times essential). When you've been going through menus so much it hurts your fingers, it's time to stop. Although I do remember the time when attempting to beat a minigame on Mario64 put a blister on my palm from rotating the little joystick thing (doing it wrong, I now suspect)... Clearly haven't learnt my lesson.

Here we go. I rarely have time to put six-hour marathon sessions of games anymore, but I was all over ''StarOceanTheSecondStory'' and ''SkiesOfArcadia'' like that 10 years ago. Sniff. Good times. Other games that have sent me spiraling into compulsive play: ''PerfectDark'' and ''Left4Dead'' multiplayer sessions. Also, I only learned to love The Mercenaries after trying it in MP and still love to tap dat ass from time to time. Finally, ''DissidiaFinalFantasy''. I put, like, what, 150 hours into that game? I also have 100+ hours put into ''Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days'' and Persona 3 Portable for my PSP. Oh, and TVTropes, dammit.
