When I hadn't played the game yet, I used to think Master Chief's name was... Halo. I blame the Internet.
#66991
I know how you feel, I used to think that Alex Mercer's name was {{Prototype}}.
#66992
Well...it's not his name, but it does describe him.
#66993
This troper and his brother and sister used to refer to the protagonist of the "Kung Fu" TV series as "Kung Fu". They ''knew'' his name was Caine, TheyJustDidntCare.
#66994
This troper and her sister used to think that Alex Trebek's name was "Jeopardy."
#66995
This troper thought Dick Dastardly & Muttley in Their Flying Machines was called "Stop The Pigeon", mostly because "Stop The Pigeon" was the prominent line in the opening theme, and he was too young to read the title.
#66996
I was old enough to read, there were just '''so many words!'' And "stop the pigeon" has a much better ring to it.
#66997
This troper used to call Little Caesar's ''Pizza, Pizza!''
#66998
I bet that would have caused a lot of confusion if you came to Canada- there's actually a chain called Pizza Pizza up here.
#66999
My brother and I once had an idiot friend that used to do this and other similar acts of name-butchery (Astaroth to him = Axtaroth because he has an axe, Yuusuke Urameshi becomes "Yu Yu Hakusho"). He did it so much that after re-telling the stories about the kid (with whom we have thankfully lost contact), it became an inside joke to do it ourselves sometimes. Because of this, Adam Richman of "Man v. Food" is now referred to by the title of his show. It's at a point where I'm concerned that if I met him in real life, I'd call him "Man v. Food" by accident.
#67000
Back in 1992, this troper's sister's friend was under the impression there was a presidential candidate named "Clinton Gore."
#67001
This troper recently dressed as Link for her school's Halloween festivities. Throughout the day, people kept calling out, "Hey, Zelda!" (As well as Peter Pan. But that's a different trope.)
#67002
I've also dressed as Link and gotten the Peter Pan remark. I feel your pain.
#67003
Inversion: Whenever someone comes into this troper's room, he likes to pause whatever he is watching if possible so as to not have to divide his attention. His mother came in one day, saw House's {{Perma Stubble}}'d mug frozen on the screen, and asked "Is that the doctor from ''House''?"
#67004
This troper's mother once had trouble remembering the name of "the husband from ''DharmaAndGreg''".
#67005
When Alien Resurrection came out, This Troper and his classmates did not speak English yet, and they thought Alien is the name of Sigourney Weaver's character. It sounded like a female name.
#67006
If this troper had a dollar for every time her parent's referred to her DS as Nintendo...
#67007
I know your pain; my cousins insist on calling their DS consoles "Gameboys".
#67008
It's actually a pretty common practice to refer to a console made by Nintendo as simply a Nintendo, but the "Gameboy=DS" thing is just dumb.I hope they were too young to read...
#67009
If I had a dollar for every time my sister pulls this trope, I'd buy {{Persona3}} and a Playstation.
#67010
The primary school this troper went to had a psychology class, although it was more like series of personality tests and games. When this troper forgot the teacher's name and asked her what it was, she praised him, saying that most other primary school kids who did not know her name just called her "Psychology".
#67011
Watching the 2010 Oscars presentation for Best Animated Feature, your contributor thought that the white-haired cartoon girl semi-promoting her Oscar-nominated film was named Kells (as in ''The Secret of Kells''). It's actually Aisling.
#67012
This troper was amazed to find out, at the age of six, that the name of the yellow cartoon bald man from TheSimpsons was not "Doh' man," but Homer.
#67013
Many years ago, before all this "Fusion" and "Zero Mission" nonsense, I was trying to convince a friend that SamusIsAGirl. What was his argument? "No, Samus is a guy. ''{{Metroid}}'' is a girl."
#67014
One of my ex-friends wanted to make his own Gaia account and, seeing as I had one, figured I could help him with the process. Everything was fine to start off with, so I figured I'd give him a little background on the characters and story, starting with Ian. Anyone with even a cursory knowledge of Ian's past should definitely know that Ian is or was a vampire and that his father was none other than Vladimir Von Helson. As soon as I hit the name "Von Helson", he interrupted me with this gem: #QUOTE#'''A''': I know who Von Helson is. He's that guy who kills the vampire. Needless to say, this stopped my attempts at providing background.
#67015
I also recently saw a listing on playlist.com titled ''Sail Away'' when looking for Enya's music. No, that's part of a line from her song ''Orinoco Flow''.
#67016
This Troper once was staying at his cousin's house and he turned on Dragon Ball Z. The episode had Goku on the Snakeway. Cue Troper's aunt entering the room and asking "The guy running is Dragon Ball?".
#67017
As a child, this troper and her friends watched CaptainPlanet, and since HE was only around for a little bit at the end of every episode, thought the show was called "The Planeteers", and called it that.
#67018
When this troper first heard about Jamiroquai, he believed that this was the Jay Kay's stage name. Even when he knows the truth, he still refers to Jamiroquai as "him".
#67019
This Troper's girlfriend keeps referring to the Na'vi as "The Avatar". While this is true to an extent, the "Avatars" are the Na'vi bodies whose minds are interlinked with the human counterparts so the human can live in the Avatar. I've explained this to her several times but to no avail.
#67020
This Troper's mom, although knowing Link from Zelda is called Link, thought Solid Snake's name was Metal Gear...
#67021
In this troper's old 2nd grade class, we had to write a paper on our favorite character from a movie, book, or video game. One girl said her favorite character in a movie was "Allison Wonderland".
#67022
A guy in this troper's class said that the violence of Iran was shown when {{Persepolis}} goes into Tehran. Persepolis is an ancient city, Marjane Satrapi is the writer and protagonist of the graphic memoir Persepolis.
#67023
Even though my mom knows his actual name, she has the tendency to refer to Waldo as "Where's Waldo" for some odd reason. I recently dressed up as him for my school's homecoming week, and afterward she was telling everyone that I was "Where's Waldo" for Character Day.
#67024
This troper took his nephews trick-or-treating this past Halloween dressed up as Rorschach. More than one parent pointed at me while looking at their kid and said, "Look! You know who that is? That's ''The Watchman!''"
#67025
This Troper was in the habit of calling the dog on ''FetchWithRuffRuffman'' "Fetch" until he was squarely corrected that it's the ''show'' that's named ''Fetch'' and not the dog.
#67026
One a friend once told me that I find kind of amusing: Someone spotted one of their JoyDivision albums, and, not knowing anything about the band, assumed it was a female solo artist who happened to have a really cool name.
#67027
I was recently in a play were I played a character named "Rodney". Since it was the first time working with this director/teacher, I had to remind him on more than one occasion that it was not my real name.
#67028
This is actually a pretty common thing that directors do. Sometimes even the cast will walk around referring to one another as their character names.
#67029
I used to think YuYuHakusho was the name of the main character.
#67030
This troper got this A LOT when people saw his name on paper.
#67031
It was not five minutes ago that I discovered that Hiryu's ''name'' isn't {{Strider}}, but rather, that he's ''a'' Strider. My life is a lie.
#67032
When briefing a former fan about the (then) current ''{{Bionicle}}'' story, I was confronted with the following question: "But at the end, the Bionicles will win, right?" He was referring to the Toa Mata, one single group of Toa, who represent only a fraction of the good guys.
#67033
Not me but my sister seems to think that the Na'vi are known as the Avatar (as a race). Even though I tell her what they are and said that the "Avatar" are Human-made Na'vi, she still called them Avatar. Silly sister.
#67034
Before seeing the anime, I thought Stellvia was the name of the main character (it's the space station's name).
#67035
This: #QUOTE# '''Troper's brother (Watching him play a ''{{Bleach}}'' game):''' So which of these characters is ''Bleach''?
#67036
When the Nintendo DS was initially announced, some of my friends insisted on calling it the "Gameboy DS." When I pointed this out, one of them said, and I quote, "I know exactly what I'm talking about! My dad works at Nintendo!" This, of course, was a blatant lie, since I lived in ''Georgia'' at the time. He later told me that he was just messing with me, but it didn't make me feel better.
#67037
I still remember a segment of an MTV show from years ago where an audience member was picked out to be interviewed by the host. When asked about unlikely celebrity crushes, she said "I think {{Aerosmith}} is pretty cute". The host ''did'' point out that Aerosmith isn't one person though.
#67038
This troper has a photo stored on his camera phone which shows some text advertising an exhibition of Japanese cartoon characters, including a 'life size figure' of '{{Neon Genesis Evangelion}}'. There's something badly wrong with that, EVAs are too big to make into 'life size figures'!
#67039
Also, his brother once got a piece of homework with a question asking what the name of the time machine owned by Series/DoctorWho was.
#67040
I remember a school question asking who the Doctor's greater's enemy was. I can't recall if this trope was present, because the Whovians in the class were preoccupied by a greater issue: the context (I think it was a crossword or something like that) clearly pointed to "Dalek" but as everyone attested, the Doctor's true nemesis is the Master.
