This troper's dear friend decided to go on a diet during her high school senior year. That wouldn't be bad if the girl wasn't a 5'2, 95 lb Asian girl who was also a vegetarian and ate like bird already. Her mother's constant nitpicking at her weight and health brainwashed the poor girl into being very self conscious about her body; when this troper told her own mother a former nurse that her statement of "that's not right" pretty much summed everything up. Everyone at our lunch table pretty much begged her to eat more but she refused and many of us kept watch to be sure she didn't start throwing up food (it never happened). Thankfully she didn't drop too much weight on the diet (not that she had much to start with) and started keep a balance weight of 80-85 lb.
#64838
10-15 pounds down from 95 is "not too much"? I seriously hope your friend is okay, because 80-85 is extremely low for that height, even if she has a tiny frame. If she dieted to get down there she ought to see a counsellor or therapist. For what it's worth, I speak as someone who's struggled with disordered eating for years and hates to hear about others falling into the same trap, that's all.
#64839
This troper was eating lunch at highschool with two guy friends and two girl friends. The girls went back inside to get some napkins, and while they were gone the guys turned to this troper and asked if Katherine was the "super-skinny hot one" or the "fugly fat one." The "fugly fat one" is rather attractive, albeit large-nosed, and not fat at all. This troper, in the middle of the two friends' sizes, wonders if she's too fat for the guys.
#64840
This troper's toothpick friend is always complaining about how fat she is and what she can't eat. But, when we talk about girls who actually ARE Hollywood Pudgy, she goes on a rampage "SHE'S HUGE", "WHAT A WHALE", etc. With my more hourglass figure and a bit of a muffin top, I wonder what I am to that twig.
#64841
This troper used to be HollywoodPudgy, but her mother's passive-aggressive (and sometimes just plain aggressive) attacks on her weight are a large contributing factor in her transition to just this side of clinically obese. And for the record, her mother's also enormous.
#64842
Wow, you and I are eerily similar. Right down to the mother.
#64843
This troper has had weight issues almost her whole life. She was rail-thin until about eight when she got pudgy. Her weight constantly changed, until now, when she's been at 5'7 and 130. Which is a healthy BMI, but compared to the twigs that go to her school is huge.
#64844
*hugs* Are you me?
#64845
This troper was attacked by Something Awful back in February of 2008, and one of the most-used insults was that I "could double for Kathy Bates". Never mind that all they had seen of me was my (now defunct) YouTube videos, where I was only seen from the neck up. In real life I have actually been complimented on my looks. If anything, I look like the sort of girl that Robert Crumb would draw, and that's not too bad.
#64846
SA is full of Internet Tough Guys who have exacting standards on what constitutes feminine beauty -- and 99.99% of them fail to meet the most liberal standards on what constitutes ''masculine'' beauty. FARK isn't any better. I would know; I used to be a TotalFarker. My own wife weighs in a 150lbs, and depending on who makes the clothes, swings between a size 10 and a size 16. I've known the lady since 2000, and I still can't keep my hands off her.
#64847
But does the previous troper need to get to the gym in 26 minutes?
#64848
Wait, I've actually seen ''fights'' on Fark about rail-thin women vs. curvy ones. There were roughly equal amounts of people on both sides.
#64849
This is also true on SomethingAwful, both sides have enough supporters but when you get targeted by their hate being "skinny" is a lesser insult than "fatty".
#64850
They were trolling you and you fell right into their hands. Congratulations, welcome to the internet.
#64851
While this troper wouldn't be called pudgy by anybody with functional eyes, he does know some people that are pretty much in the middle of ideal weight in the BM-index, yet sometimes get called chubby.
#64852
Some people with round faces really ''do'' look chubby no matter their actual weight. This troper, at her absolute thinnest, which was underweight for her height, ''looked'' basically the same as she does now. Which is slightly overweight. I've got a prodigously big head and a rather big ribcage as well-- when I lose weight, I end up with at very best a bit of an hourglass waist. Not to mention fainting spells, irritability, inability to concentrate and frequent nosebleeds. Which is rather... less attractive than just a bit of extra poodge.
#64853
A bit of extra poodge can, in fact, be adorable. Especially with round faces.
#64854
This troper has a gay guy friend who is constantly invoking this trope and complaining about how he needs to lose weight because he is such a fatass. Now, just to put it in perspective: Me, 5'5", 150 pounds, Irish and Scottish, curvy with HartmanHips but still fairly bony with a little bit extra from when she was in her early teens and depressed (basically a female version of my dad's body type, since he has a little bit of a gut but isn't too tall and is actually pretty healthy for a guy his age since he takes care of himself). My friend, 5'6", skinny as a twig with little to no body fat and ''maybe'' 130 pounds soaking wet. I've managed to lift him over my shoulder and he still complains, and needless to say whenever he starts on this weight thing around women they all tell him to shut the hell up. He also manages to eat a diet that would make any normal person puff up like a balloon since he has a ridiculous metabolism. Seriously, this guy eats enough for two people most of the time and most of it is swimming in fat, especially his favorite breakfast, which everyone including him calls a "heart attack on a bagel". My ex-girlfriend (who was of a similar body type to me) threatened to throw said friend like a javelin for the weight comments. Oh, and his doctor is now trying to tell him that he's ''medically underweight'' since he's evidently down to 120 pounds, and yet he still complains. *{{facepalm}}*
#64855
DesertDragon: This trope is interesting with gay men. All my life I was told I was tall and lanky until I came out, because apparently gay men love skin and bones. I've had ''sooo'' many friends and boyfriends endlessly bitch about their size. For every one who really is heavy-set, there are three whose weight ''might'' be at the upper levels of average, but they wouldn't look fat if they would stop trying to squeeze into size 30 jeans and medium shirts. Strangely enough, those who really are overweight are more likely to accept themselves, or at least have realistic weightloss goals.
#64856
Among high school student, this is pretty rampant. Like in hollywood, it's comparative, there are a lot of extremely healthy and attractive females so you have an increased standard. This girl or that girl isn't considered attractive because they aren't skinny enough, when most males over 25 would be VERY grateful to have a girl that skinny. As a (male) high school student, this grates on my nerves.
#64857
One of this troper's friends in high school was rather self-conscious about her weight, and got called fat by one of the guys (probably just to annoy her). She actually weighed about 110 pounds and was one of the most attractive people in the class.
#64858
I'm putting this here instead of the main page because I pray to God this opinion isn't shared by anyone else, but my mother has called Michelle Obama fat. Michelle. Frikkin'. Obama. She has some sort of weird dislike for her (still bitter that Hillary isn't in the White House perhaps) but even though she saw just how upset that made me (cause if Michelle is fat, then I'm just obese!) I don't think her opinion really changed.
#64859
Michelle Obama has curves in all the right places.
#64860
Compared to some of the insane shit slung at Laura Bush, Michelle's gotten off easy so far.
#64861
True dat. Plus, Michelle Obama is freakin' TALL. If she were much thinner than she is, she's look like Skeletor. Plus there's the whole having birthed two kids thing.
#64862
This troper had a ShirtlessScene in a home made movie and I was attacked by 4Chan as being a tub of lard barely contained in a body. I think I am skinny, and its just that the people on 4Chan are used to stick men from anime. I fail to find what is so sexy about a man who looks like he left the Holocaust, fighting AdolfHitler on the way out, and then suffered through poverty for a month.
#64863
Dude, it's 4Chan. They'd tell a starving child that he was fat if they thought it'd be fun.
#64864
Strangely averted by this lurker's school. Everyone uses the BMI system, and you only get considered fat once you enter the morbidly obese catagory, as in ''actually fat''. Girls that are rail-thin usually get much less attention from the boys too.
#64865
This troper learned to be bulimic from reading stories in teen magazines about how girls lost scary amonuts of weight having eating disorders and then went to rehab. She decided rehab wouldn't be so bad if she lost weight first. Did she mention that before she had an eating disorder she was a size 8? And now she's a size 14/16 and mostly much happier in life.
#64866
This troper would probably be considered by many people as chubby if not fat. However, I'm exceedingly self-confident and know that I have great curves, especially since there's nothing wrong with a bit of pudge on a girl. It also helps that my girlfriend thinks I'm gorgeous.
#64867
This Troper is not even 115 lbs, yet when I found out I'd need new bras, it caused a breakdown. My boyfriend (and I agree) suspects it's down to a phobia -- didn't stop me panicking and starting an exercise regime over it though.
#64868
If you're only 115 lbs and you need bigger bras, wouldn't that be cause for celebration?
#64869
This troper gets a lot of guff from one of my female friends for preferring rail-thin girls. While it's true that, lately, I've been more into skinny girls, my past two girlfriends have been HollywoodPudgy and I even almost had a thing going with a girl who was... rubenesque, I think is the right word for it (although it might not be spelled correctly). Honestly, I just have a preference for itty-bitty girls, and most itty-bitty girls happen to be 100-110 pounds. I just hate it when I get yelled at for it.
#64870
This troper is 5'5", 106 pounds, and thanks to America's ridiculous standards of beauty for women, has had serious weight/food issues since she was five. FIVE.
#64871
This Troper was regularly called fat starting at age nine. Of course, that's because I hit puberty early. I am now the proud owner of HartmanHips. People still think I'm fat, although my weight is completely healthy.
#64872
This troper was considered overweight but healthy enough as a child since I went through wild growth spurts. Cut to age 13, when the baby fat around my stomach did not disappear but, rather, spilt up and *ahem* migrated north and south. I had problems with my weight for a year or two before I realized that how awesome my size 10-12ish hourglass figure was. ...Unfortunately, my school nurse now thinks I have an eating disorder because I told her I never eat breakfast (because I have first period lunch). *sigh*
#64873
I could be considered this. I look kinda fat, but I have a lot of muscle (which is hidden below the fat). My face is also round-ish, which makes people look fat (my beard doesn't really help the issue).
#64874
This troper is underweight and is actually jealous of those who fit the trope for being healthier than he is.
#64875
This troper sister is in the trope live and breathing. We are both the same approximate weigth, but this troper truly is short and curvy with tummmy, while she is tall and more in the "big boned", evenly distributed thing. Even when she was thinner, she was constantly complaining on how fat she looks, mostly instilled by her toothpick friends and her fatass boyfriend. But when she is in the overweigh side, she fains boobs and ass... and suitors.
#64876
This troper is just a hair under 5'9, 140 lbs, and still deals with serious body image issues. I used to have a lot of puppy fat, but after a heartless jibe from my mother, I dropped it and bottomed out at around 119 lbs. The twenty pounds I've gained back haven't been received easily, even though I get comments all the time about how "thin and pretty" I am. The naturally round face doesn't help.
#64877
This troper is 5'5", 175 pounds (a lot of it stored between navel and nose) and her father will NOT. SHUT. UP. about how she needs to lose a lot of weight. Her boyfriend, on the other hand, is... a bit more appreciative.
#64878
This troper is short, solidly built, and curvy (5'2", around 120#, usually a size 6). Thanks to a neurotic father...yeah, body-image issues.
#64879
This male Troper caused this on him self after he became into a healthy back when he was about 5' even and 135 pounds he had no problem, but once I hit a growth spurt and shot up to 5'7-5'9 (not sure on what exactly) and now stays around 130 pounds even is suffering from very bad body issues even thought he has an ok figure with only a little fat right on his stomach, like a beer gut.
#64880
I am 5'3" and 150 pounds. My aunt (who was larger than me at the time, mind you) embarrassed me in the middle of Ross, pushing me into a "contract" to lose 30 pounds by New Year's. It accomplished nothing other than making me obsess about my weight even ''more'' and worry about seeing her again. This is why I hate Weight Watchers, incidentally: said aunt was a lot more fun before she joined. Maybe if the fat all settled on my boobs instead of my hips and butt people wouldn't get on my case...
#64881
ThisTroper 's ex-girlfriend is an interesting case. Being born without a thyroid to regulate her metabolism, she has always been tiny, both heightwise and widthwise. Upon entering into a relationship with ThisTroper and learning of his unusual preferences, she immediately started attempting to ''become'' HollywoodPudgy.
#64882
This troper is often told by her mother (directly) and her friends (indirectly) that she should lose weight. I don't really mind loosing weight, but still: My BMI is perfectly normal, I work-out four times a week and I quite like my HartmanHips so I'm kind of easy going in my quest for weight loss.
#64883
My sister was like this for a ''long'' time. Apparently, before I was born (she's about 10 years older than me), she ''was'' a bit heavy, but for all the time I've been around, she's thin. When she finally had kids, she pretty much stopped worrying about it as often, though she'll occassionally make comments.
#64884
This troper wants nothing to do with rail-thin model chicks. He's very affectionate...and prefers his girls soft and cuddly. His CatchPhrase when girls whine about being fat when they're just HollywoodPudgy? "Bones are for dogs. Meat is for men", followed by a squeeze and a kiss to drive his point home.
#64885
This troper agrees with the above whole-heartedly.
#64886
Peculiarly inverted with this troper. I see my own body all the time, so I know I'm charitably described as "stout" - 5'8 and somewhere around 170 lbs - but I have never had anybody refer to me as fat or even agree with me when I suggest I am. The closest anyone's come is a friend mentioning I looked like I'd lost a lot of weight, which is just fucking weird.
#64887
This troper is 5'3" and pushing 150 pounds. I've got HartmanHips and rather curvy arms and legs. I love my body. When I wear something other than jeans and a t-shirt I can look quite sensual, and I'm perfectly healthy. Now if only I could get the dudes to notice me...
#64888
I noticed - and all I saw was your description!
#64889
This troper had a friend in 9th grade who insisted she couldn't drink this or eat that because she was fat and trying to lose weight. She was 5'4" and 108 lbs. This troper is a 5'8", 150lbs gay guy with a skinnyfat(bony in places, chunky in others) build and serious body image issues. He had to physically resist strangling her every time the subject came about.
#64890
In a particularly distressing example of this trope, this troper knows a girl who has much more meat on her than the average Hollywood skeleton, but is still considered extremely attractive by her friends (including me). Unfortunately, there are many, many people who disagree with that and think she's overweight. These people have made an effort to tell her so as much as possible for much of her life, resulting in a perfectly cute, if very slightly plump girl, with horrible insecurities about her weight. As much as we tell her that she looks fine, and as much as she tries to believe us, she still becomes miserable and hurt if someone evenly jokingly calls her fat.
#64891
Before gaining a lot of weight, I was this to a lot of my classmates growing up. Part of that is that I was that in elementary school, I was friends with a pudgy, unpopular girl, and so I guess to our Dumb To Live}} classmates, I somehow became fat by association, if you will. But it seemed to follow me after that. My serious weight problem didn't even really begin until high school, but in middle school, some little troll boy dubbed me "Miss Piggy." No reason at all, other than {{Kids Are Cruel}}, I guess. I think I became so overweight at least in some part because I ate more from being so stressed out (and the anti-depressants that I take don't help much either). I'm working on it now, and going vegan might help a little.
#64892
I admit that I was rather chubby throughout elementary and most of middle school. I am currently 5'4" and 110 lbs, and yet, my mother still refers to me as fat and possibly even more overweight than I was back then, since she weighed 20 lbs less than me at my age. Most of her comments are directed at my hips and round face, since apparently to everyone else, I'm one of the skinnier girls in my school. It probably helps that she grew up in rural China.
#64893
This troper is five foot even, 145 pounds - and a size 6-8, depending on the brand of jeans. She blames thunder thighs (years of riding horses, gymnastics, etc) and the MostCommonSuperpower. Her mother rags on her about her weight - at which point she goes out and manages to have half the guys in sight checking her out.
#64894
Hi. I'm five foot six and 145lbs. When I hit the home stretch of puberty, I weighed around 190; of course, during my period of puberty-induced-fatness, my mom kept telling me how i needed to lose weight. During freshman and sophomore years of high school, I lost a lot of it, and last semester lost the last fifteen pounds that got me down to 145. My boyfriend is five foot eight or so[he claims he's five ten, but if so, then i'm five eight. Not much of a height difference.] and 160. He jokes around about how fat he is, of course. He really isn't. Maybe a bit o' pudge here and there. This troper subverted this trope. 231 lbs. for 5'10' (making him 33.1% on the BMI) and the only fat he has is mild amounts on the torso. In the arms and legs he is very nearly all muscle.
#64895
This troper is female, 15, 5'7 and 120 lbs (170cm and 55kg for you metric nuts). My mother constantly complains about how fat I am and points out my 'fat thighs' and compares them to hers. She is 5'5 and 135lbs or so. I am not fat, and she is not fat either. Although, she is Asian and has Asian standards about size.
#64896
This troper is actually a bit overweight, but between where it is (half of what would be considered "extra" is located in her lower body) and the way she carries herself, it's not really noticable. She actually likes her figure- let's see one of those size 4s get curves like hers- but her mother is constantly trying to lose weight and her brother seems to be conforming to media ideals, so it makes her mildly insecure. It doesn't help that the last time she needed new shorts she had to explain three times that yes, she could still wear the old ones, she only wanted more because she had ONE pair, and then point out that she'd had the same jean size since freshman year (she's currently a senior, set to graduate in June). Her mother then dropped that and talked about her being on the short side (5'6'') meant she'd gain weight eaiser. She felt like banging her head on the car door at that point.
#64897
This troper considers women who fit this trope (especially if it's combined with HartmanHips and/or MostCommonSuperpower) to be high octane FetishFuel. He's had plenty of girlfriends who have whined about being fat and his reply is always the same: A big hug, a kiss, and a comment to the effect of "if you're so unattractive, then why can't I keep my hands off of you? Because you're beautiful, that's why! And all those stick figures need to get some Kentucky Fried Chicken." My advice to any girl worried that no guys will like her because she's three ounces overweight? We're out there. You just have to find us.
#64898
Mira-chan is called petite by some people, chubby by others. It's just a bit of baby fat!
#64899
This troper ran her stats through the BMI and the waist-hip ratio and found herself to be at very nearly ideal (meaning center of the average) levels. Since her chest is the same measurement as her hips while her limbs and waist are thin from proper exercise and diet, the resulting ''hourglass figure'' gathers a wide variety of insults AND compliments.
#64900
This troper's mother will occasionally tell him to cut back on junk food because he's gaining weight. While objectively, this would be a legitimate concern, the fact that his girlfriend frequently compares him to The Slender Man tells him that he's healthy enough.
#64901
This troper is in high school in a very slim, healthy region, and I'm 5'6, 110 pounds, and I have the body of a ten year old child. OH, and I'm one of the fattest girls in my class.
#64902
This troper is an unabashed chubby chaser, so you'd think he'd notice if a guy were chubby. However, he was once sitting with two of his friends (we'll call them E and S), one of whom he openly discusses his romantic interests with (S), the other of whom he was romantically interested in (E). Now, S knows that this troper has unconventional tastes in men, and E was no exception. After S met E and talked with him for a while, S and this troper talked about E later, and S commented that E was kind of fat. (First-person time, now.) I was floored. I had never noticed that E was actually of above average weight (probably because he wears fairly baggy clothes, but even when he doesn't, I had never noticed). The next time I saw E, I took a look to see if S was right, and though E was above average in terms of weight, I realized that I never would have noticed had it not been pointed out. And if I, a horny chubby chaser, didn't notice that he was "pudgy," how could anyone else?
#64903
My friend insists that she's a whale even though her doctor has told her that she's dangerously underweight. Also, when making the OK sign, I can fit my hand around her mid-arm, and I have ridiculously small hands. How she can think she's 'fat' when she's size 8 (British sizes, so size 6 American?) and I'm size 14/16 is beyond me.
#64904
This Troper has dealt with some major insecurities concerning this trope. She is 5'7" and approximately 130 pounds, which is perfectly fine according to BMI. However, most of it has settled around her hips and rear, making her feel rather ashamed in the presence of her slender, big-breasted coworkers. She knows that it is irrational; she is quite healthy, and when checking out said coworkers finds that they are too skinny for her tastes. Yet somehow the negative feelings persist.
#64905
This Troper's best friend is probably about 5'8", and is pretty curvy, maybe slightly pudgy, but not horribly or really even mildly overweight. In contrast, this troper is 5'2", and roughly a size 2-3. My friend's the one who's got all the guys after her, while they hardly notice me, and if they do, it's a a friend and nothing more. Funny thing is, she doesn't have a very large appetite, and therefore doesn't eat much, while this troper eats like a 16-year-old boy without gaining a single pound.
#64906
This tropers scared how small sizes are getting/got. For example, Size 0 is a British 4. This tropers 15 year old 5'3 normal cousin is a British ''8''.
#64907
In this troper's experience, US 0 is comparable to UK 6-8. UK 4 is like US 00 or smaller.
#64908
This English troper used to be really insecure about her body, first because she was a HugeSchoolgirl in primary school/start of high school, and then because of this. I've never been that fit, either, so I used to dread PE so damn much, since I'd be lagging behind everyone else with her giant ass and thighs. That was when I was 12/13. Now, at 16? I have toned slightly. And I am beautiful. 5'7", 10 stone/140 lbs, with UK size D's and huge thighs and ass. The only thing I don't like is my shins, because they look a bit flabby, but the rest of my is fine, especailly since those shins WILL tone up after the summer (my new college is at the top of a hill). It's all down to confidence, people! I aspire to look like a 20's pinup girl, because they WERE beautiful.
#64909
This Troper is very petite (4'11''), but because of some...endowments from my mother's side of the gene pool, I have relatively big breasts for a girl my size (34C), and the rest of my body is curvy/muscular to keep it all in proportion. This means that at the weight my body seems to think is "just right" (around 110/115, or a size 4), I still look somewhat pudgy compared to other girls who are my height, even though I've been repeatedly told that I'm far from fat.
#64910
Gotta say, all the stuff with this trope and other tropers' reaction to it make me feel like a shithead sometimes. I honestly seem to prefer fairly petite girls (though actually being turned off by really tall girls) and it isn't that I make a conscious decision as to whom I am attracted. Also, not sure how it is connected but as a guy I am pretty genuinely stick-like. 6'2", maybe 140 pounds with fairly broad shoulders and a deformity in the pectus to make things look even worse.
#64911
I agree with that guy I prefer smaller girl.Just because he did I feel like I should add that I'm 6'0 maybe 6'1 155 pounds
#64912
This male troper finds HollywoodPudgy women to be somewhat attractive.
#64913
This other male troper agrees. Slim women are attractive, HollywoodPudgy women are attractive, but stick figures are honestly a bit creepy... Especially when they're so thin you can see their bones.
#64914
This troper writes fanfiction in which HollywoodPudgy is the average yet ideal body type, and anyone trying to starve themselves is shot.
#64915
Do note this is fanfiction only, and that those who are shot are also those capturing others to brainwash into their dirty methods
#64916
Said troper who wrote this could qualify for this trope as well
#64917
My older sister used to be this. Nowadays, she has a happy medium, healthy figure, but since I have a sort of waif build, she'll still sometimes talk about how she's "heavy" and needs to exercise more. (granted, she focuses more on gaining muscle than in getting skinnier, but still). It's sort of ironic because I get a lot of crap for being "too skinny". In another story, my friend had auditioned for this play at my school where she got cast as Susan Storm from X-Men (the story was sort of a huge crossover clusterfuck). Hours later, this guy from our grade who thinks he knows more about theatre than our teacher begins to complain at how my friend isn't fit for the role because she's too big and instead it should be cast as another girl who also looked more or less like Susan. Said girl is a model and definitely looks like one. However, it wouldn't be so bad if he hadn't caused such drama out of this (said guy isn't that good-looking or thin himself anyway...). Just proves how overly critical and shallow some people can be.
#64918
This troper is legitimately hefty/overweight, 5'6", 180-odd pounds (29 BMI), but from the way his ex acted, he was an obese tub of lard. It was one of the excuses he used to cheat on me. The ironic thing was that he WAS clinically obese.
#64919
This troper is an active, outdoorsy 5'3" female who alternates between 135 and 145 pounds. I have both Hips}} Hartman Hips and the Common Superpower}} Most Common Superpower, which gives me a pretty dramatic hourglass shape. I alternate between liking my curves and feeling like the fattest whale on the face of the planet. It doesn't help that my family is always giving me the "You'd be so pretty if you just..." speech. I'm sure there are guys out there who wouldn't be disgusted by me, but I haven't found one yet.
#64920
...are you me? Because that is pretty much an exact description of my situation, only I'm 5'1" and 110-120 pounds. People's reactions to me tend be calling me a whale for having HartmanHips, the MostCommonSuperPower bordering on GagBoobs, and average sized shoulders (as opposed to the super narrow shoulders most actresses/models sport). And yes, I've never met a guy who thought I was anything other than a complete fatass.

This tropers best friend has Hartman Hips and has the Most Common Superpower, and is only sixteen, but insists she's fat, just because she needs at least two/three sizes up from her three petite sisters, she fails to realise however, the reason for needing two or three sizes up is because 1) A lot of shops have their own individual views on what lets say...a size 4 or 8 should be and 2) She needs to get bigger sizes because of her bust and hips.
#64922
This troper is 5'9" tall, weighs 120 pounds (having a BMI of 17.7), and has the perfect measurements to be a "''plus size''" model. What the...?
#64923
Where this troper lives, it is rare to find females of an "average" build. They are either Hollywood Thin or grossly obese. As a result, anyone who ''is'' of an average-to-small build usually gets lumped in with the obese people and are frequently bullied for being fat, even if they're a perfectly healthy weight (it's a rather outspoken and bitchy community). This troper is a UK size 8 (US size 3) and has been called "fat bitch" by girls in the street multiple times. Weird thing is, she even gets it from girls who are twice her size, which shows just how hypocritical some people can be. She ended up having very low self-esteem as a result, still does a little bit. She recently discovered that she is borderline-underweight, but still gets rude comments about her size by smaller girls, which is worrying to say the least.
#64924
This troper has a female friend who is about 5'2 and weighs maybe 120 pounds, and is really pretty. She, however has a really bitchy mom who teases her for being fat. She's pretty sensitive and lets it get to her, despite being told that she's hot and being crushed on by half of the guys at school.
#64925
This troper has crazy thin cousins who are all Asians. So, of course, in their eyes this troper is fat. She's come to terms with her family's weirdness and doesn't feel offended anymore. It's much easier to just block their health babbling out of her mind. She rather likes her chubbiness.
#64926
One of this troper's best friends seems to think that she's rather fat, in spite of not having a belly. I mean, there are skinnier girls, but that's not due to overeating so much as a combination of MostCommonSuperpower and HartmanHips.
#64927
Just as a general note, BMI is not a particularly good indicator of healthiness, or physical appearance. It doesn't take into account body composition, and isn't very good outside of a certain height range, so muscular people as well as the tall tend to be overestimated (Dwight Howard, according to BMI, is on the upper end of overweight). In contrast, if you're very short, BMI will tend to overestimate what a healthy weight for you is. In addition, it's perfectly possible to be at a great BMI and look terrible, although exercise and a better diet will usually fix that pretty easily.
#64928
Not too long ago, this troper got in an altercation with a teenage girl who almost backed into her car, and over the course of the argument got called 'fat'. Not only am I a very short, flat-chested size one, the girl herself was obviously heavier than me, though by no means overweight herself. I'm torn between amusement and outright disturbance at a.) the fact that this kid that thought it had any relevance to the fact that she almost, you know, ''backed into my car'', and b.) that she seemed to believe it. I mean...what.
#64929
This troper had a rather interesting incident with a very skinny girl in a Target once. While I was shopping for back to school, passing by another teenager, she said quite clearly, "Fattie." Keep in mind that I had recently lost 30 pounds, lost my childhood chubbiness, and was a size 9. Fast forward to two years later, where I'm still a size 9 despite exercising and eating right. I'm pretty fucking sure I'm at a healthy weight, despite BMI telling me that I am "slightly overweight." Always knew it was a piece of shit. As for the girl, ehm, I've forgotten her entirely until I stumbled upon this page :D
#64930
This troper finds HollywoodPudgy sort of attractive...
#64931
This troper's father called this troper's friend fat. She has a rather normal body. Cuddly, but in no way fat!
#64932
This troper is 5ft 8 and a British size 14, which is about average. However, she's heavy for her height for one very good reason. All of her weight shifts upwards rather than goes away, hence why she's now ended up with H-cups, and they're probably set to grow again which means even more weight, yay.
#64933
This troper is 5ft 10 and a fairly muscular 170lbs. His family constantly tells him how fat he's gotten, despite the fact that the ridges of his abdominal muscle are clearly visible.
#64934
This troper doesn't understand the hate towards girls who are size 2 or below. This troper is a size 2, but because she's also quite short (5'), she doesn't look anywhere near like the toothpick models, because they tend to be quite tall. In fact, most American mens' reactions to my body have ranged from "hmm, I think you'd look really nice if you dropped another ten pounds or so" to "GROSS FATTY I'D RATHER HAVE MY DICK DROP OFF THAN SEE YOU NAKED."
#64935
Troper has taught in various Asian countries, is 5'3 and anywhere from an American size 14 to 18, and knows she's more on the {{BBW}} end than HollywoodPudgy. And when you are a larger-sized American in Asia, people do everything from poke your belly and/or arm fat to asking you if you're pregnant. She's used to it. But what floored her was one of her kindergardeners - a six year old girl, who was perfectly proportionate for her age - coming into her office and bursting into tears because her mother said she was "too fat" and needed to go on a diet.
#64936
Goodness, you're all quite short, aren't you?
#64937
This troper is definitely this. Most of the weight's in her hips and thighs, which she would be okay with on its own, but she also kind of has a gut, which, when she gets down or has recently been hit in the face with media-thin girls, she starts hating and feeling fat. It's really not fun, so she utterly loathes this trope.
#64938
This troper briefly worked as a dishwasher in a restaurant, and while the job sucked, it did have the perk that the chef was constantly telling her she was too skinny and needed to eat more. Her other job was at a coffee shop in a mall, with two tiny Asian coworkers, where half the customers were mall employees decked out in designer clothes from the shops they worked in. For what it's worth, the troper is 5'7", weighs 140, and has wide hips, D-cup boobs and a narrow waist. "Skinny" isn't the right description, but neither is "fat". She just wishes she could find pants that fit.
#64939
I have twice heard people remark that their surroundings make them not feel fat anymore. In fairness, one was at a station where most people will have spent more than 2 hours per day on a train while the other was a Taiwanese woman in England. Seems the Taiwanese average is a lot thinner than the British average.
#64940
This troper is more of a Foglio Girl, with the HartmanHips but requiring some undergarment assistance to achieve the MostCommonSuperPower. At 5'4", that doesn't leave a lot of room for extra weight, but even at her skinniest, she still hears the kids in middle school reminding her that she is an obese cow unworthy of male attention. Watching a US size eight actress treated like she is Shamu the killer whale does not help.
#64941
This troper (male) is genuinely morbidly obese (400+ at 6'0") and does a lot of clothes shopping out of a catalog (6x shirt size, 64" waist are not common sizes in stores). And in a catalog dedicates to clothing for the obese... everything is modeled by rail-thin male clothing models. It's real fun trying to dress in a somewhat stylish manner when you don't even know what the clothing will look like on your frame.
#64942
This troper used to be very secure in her body image. I used to be a competitive swimmer and weighed 86 lbs at 5'0". My BMI was 16.8, which was, on the charts, pretty clearly underweight, but for the most part, I was treated as average. When I quit swimming, I put on weight over the next several years and am now 112 lbs at the same height--BMI 21.9, which is apparently perfectly average. However, I've become terribly insecure now because ever since I quit swimming, my parents constantly make rude comments about my weight and imply constantly that I am morbidly obese and still gaining weight. I have no idea what is considered a good weight any more, and am now generally terrified of putting on any form-fitting clothing.
#64943
Your current height/weight sounds pretty cute :) I'm 5 feet and 110 pounds (BMI 21.64), very close to yours, and I look perfectly fine, so it should look good on you too. If anything, 21.9 BMI you sounds way more attractive than 16.8 BMI you. If your parents are making rude comments, don't listen.
#64944
This troper is 5'0" and 50kg (110 pounds). According to a BMI calculator, she's 21.64. Sounds perfectly healthy, huh? That's because BMI is utter shit. Most of it is fat. She has very little muscle. She also has a skinnyfat build, which gives this sort of appearance. In fact, BMI being a load of crap is a bit of a running gag in troper's family-her mother once said her BMI thought she'd be dead in five years, but she eats very healthily, goes to the gym every week, and generally lives a very healthy, active lifestyle and simply has a very stocky build. Little brother's school (which troper graduated last year) is now doing BMI tests. Unfortunately, her little brother, who is '''eight''', is a couple inches and a few kilos less than her. She dreads seeing his results.
#64945
Graggh...''Now'' she seems to have a bad case of HollywoodPudgy. She's up to her second term of high school and just came back from school camp...in which she discovered that the other girls in her year level were generally somewhere between 20kg-50kg, and she's up to 51.5kg (113.3lb). At dinnertime on the second day, she had to reassure a 36kg, 5'3" or so girl that she wasn't fat. And she's apparently overweight according to that stupid 'percentile' thing child [=BMIs=] are calculated with. Her friend is 5'5" and around 53kg. '''FML.'''
#64946
I'm 5'4 with a very small frame (my bras have a 32 band size), impressive MostCommonSuperpower and HartmanHips. I used to have some borderline eating disorder habits and depression made them worse. IGotBetter with the weight issues, but the depression continued to affect my eating. When I hit something like 115 I found myself looking in the mirror and being kind of grossed out (my ribs were beginning to show, yuck), and started actively trying to gain weight. Ten or so months later? 150lbs and I look great. Seriously, I have never really been happy with how I looked, but now I'm incredibly confident in my appearance (other parts, not so much). I laughed my ass off when my BMI was calculated in the "overweight" range. So what if my stomach's not flat and my thighs touch (OH THE HORROR)? I look GOOD.
#64947
Also, I'm very attracted to women, but the HollywoodThin need not apply. Looking unhealthy is not sexy.
#64948
This troper is 5"0 and weighs 103lbs, but thanks to her naturally-wide hips, stumpy-looking legs and the fact nearly all her weight seems to go to her thighs and stay there (AKA: She has a skinny upper-half, but is noticeably wider/rounder from hips downwards) she's had people belittle her for being "so chubby", making her obsess about her weight and try various crash-diets to fit in with the stick-thin girls who would mock her. Oddly, while being on the receiving end of fat jokes from one group, others say she actually needs to ''gain'' weight. Her "Pear-shape" is the cause of much confusion on her part; "Your ribs and spine are protruding, please eat something!" "Your thighs are slightly touching at the top, stop eating!". Fat or thin, which is it!? Must depend on which part they look at.
#64949
My weight confuses me daily. I'm 5'8/9", just shy of/on 12 stone (175 pounds?) last time I checked, and my BMI says I'm 26, which is "at risk of being overweight". I wear a 12/14 (in UK sizes, not US) and lots of people consider me skinny/slim/healthy... but I don't have the flattest stomach or perfectly toned limbs (though I exercise) so seeing girls at my college taller and thinner than me makes me feel really fat. :( I can't blame it on MostCommonSuperpower either, because I'm a 36C. I do have a fairly narrow waist but large hips though.
#64950
I'm about five pounds over what my Bmi says is a healthy weight of someone my size, but I have really large breasts so any extra at in my stomach isn't really noticeable by comparison. But because guys have never asked me out I always feel that I'm either too fat or too ugly for them, despite the fact the when i look in the mirror i don't think I'm that bad. either that or I secretly have an awful personality. D: Man, I wish i could meet a nice, nerdy guy. I just feel pathetic.
#64951
This troper is 5'6" and 135 lbs. Unfortunately, she remains horribly obsessed with losing weight because of the twig-like population of her hometown.
#64952
This troper has a friend who is so skinny that I'm sometimes convinced he doesn't eat enough. He continually complains about his "manboobs" and weight.
#64953
This troper's former roommate is 6'7" in height and around 285 lbs in weight. When he gives people his stats, the usual answer goes: "Wow! You're fat!" '''Have you ever seen a 6'7" man weigh 120 lbs? Yes, it's called an underfed man-twig!!!''' Learn something for fuck sake!
#64954
This troper is 5'9" and 175lb, which is a BMI of 26-just a tiny bit overweight. She also has H-cups and HartmanHips. She is treated as disgustingly fat at school, especially in comparison with her best friends, one of who's 5'2" and 85lbs, the other of who's 5'9" and 120lbs (who both don't really care).
#64955
This troper is over 6 feet tall with HartmanHips and MostCommonSuperPower, and she loves it almost as much as the opposite sex loves it. Unfortunately the fashion industry doesn't seem too fond of it, because she can't find cute clothes anywhere. Apparently tall women are only supposed to come in HollywoodThin.
#64956
This troper is 5'1 (?) and 115 lbs.People think she's either fat or healthy for her weight.
#64957
Fat!? That's nothing. This troper used to be 117 pounds at 4'11". She lost weight over time but still, no one called her fat during that time. (The school clinic did say she was overweight, but their scale was broken and added '5 pounds' to your actual weight.)
#64958
In this troper's class, out of about 38 people, 95 percent are over 5'1" and under 100 pounds. And they 'still' think they're fat and compare their 'leg sizes'. This troper is 5'0.5" and 107 pounds, and she doesn't think she's fat, although in truth she is a bit overweight.
#64959
This troper is maybe 9 and a half stone (anyone know what that is in pounds?) and somewhere near 6 foot tall (at age 18), yet he sure as hell doesn't look his weight (a fast metabolism also helps). He inverts this trope because when he doesn't eat lunch (mostly because he can't find a good time to do so), people comment that he needs to eat more. Because four wheetabix and a cup of tea for breakfast isn't enough to last the morning. In fairness, his lunch mostly is made up of a small sandwich, a packet of crisps and a small chocolate bar and he usually eats pretty well at dinner (to the extent of being a BigEater), so he can sometimes afford to skip lunch. This trope gets particularly irritating as he's trying to GAIN weight because he wants to stop having a reason for calling himself a walking skeleton.
#64960
Oh god where do I start...
#64961
My best friend, a 12-year-old, 5'3, 90 pound girl with a small frame. I have never once seen her finish a meal. Not even the crappy school lunches the boys need to get two of. And yet she still says she's fat.
#64962
My older sister, who was 19 at the time, ate nothing but a grape and a container of cottage cheese for a month one time, and only because our mother made her. She is 5'10 with a large frame and weighed around 115 pounds.
#64963
My older brother when he was 16. He was 6'4 with a mid-sized frame. He weighed 120 pounds. He was almost kicked out of his boarding school. He decided to gain muscle in the end.
#64964
My mother occassionally has a bout of this. She is 5'7 with a medium frame and weighs 110 pounds at most.
#64965
And finally, this tropette herself. I have been stuck in puberty since age 8. I am 5'6 with a medium frame. My BMI is 22.6. I weigh 140 pounds and am currently on the brink of anorexia. (Damn classmates...) What can I say? It runs in the family.
