That wouldn't be bad if the girl wasn't a 5'2, 95 lb Asian girl who was also a vegetarian and ate like bird already. Everyone at our lunch table pretty much begged her to eat more but she refused and many of us kept watch to be sure she didn't start throwing up food (it never happened). Thankfully she didn't drop too much weight on the diet (not that she had much to start with) and started keep a balance weight of 80-85 lb.

10-15 pounds down from 95 is "not too much"? I seriously hope your friend is okay, because 80-85 is extremely low for that height, even if she has a tiny frame. If she dieted to get down there she ought to see a counsellor or therapist. For what it's worth, I speak as someone who's struggled with disordered eating for years and hates to hear about others falling into the same trap, that's all.

Some people with round faces really ''do'' look chubby no matter their actual weight. This troper, at her absolute thinnest, which was underweight for her height, ''looked'' basically the same as she does now. Which is slightly overweight. DesertDragon: This trope is interesting with gay men. All my life I was told I was tall and lanky until I came out, because apparently gay men love skin and bones. I've had ''sooo'' many friends and boyfriends endlessly bitch about their size. For every one who really is heavy-set, there are three whose weight ''might'' be at the upper levels of average, but they wouldn't look fat if they would stop trying to squeeze into size 30 jeans and medium shirts. Strangely enough, those who really are overweight are more likely to accept themselves, or at least have realistic weightloss goals.

Among high school student, this is pretty rampant. Like in hollywood, it's comparative, there are a lot of extremely healthy and attractive females so you have an increased standard. This girl or that girl isn't considered attractive because they aren't skinny enough, when most males over 25 would be VERY grateful to have a girl that skinny. As a (male) high school student, this grates on my nerves.

Strangely averted by this lurker's school. Everyone uses the BMI system, and you only get considered fat once you enter the morbidly obese catagory, as in ''actually fat''. Girls that are rail-thin usually get much less attention from the boys too.

This troper learned to be bulimic from reading stories in teen magazines about how girls lost scary amonuts of weight having eating disorders and then went to rehab. In a particularly distressing example of this trope, this troper knows a girl who has much more meat on her than the average Hollywood skeleton, but is still considered extremely attractive by her friends (including me). Unfortunately, there are many, many people who disagree with that and think she's overweight. These people have made an effort to tell her so as much as possible for much of her life, resulting in a perfectly cute, if very slightly plump girl, with horrible insecurities about her weight. This Troper is very petite (4'11''), but because of some...endowments from my mother's side of the gene pool, I have relatively big breasts for a girl my size (34C), and the rest of my body is curvy/muscular to keep it all in proportion. This means that at the weight my body seems to think is "just right" (around 110/115, or a size 4), I still look somewhat pudgy compared to other girls who are my height, even though I've been repeatedly told that I'm far from fat.

My older sister used to be this. Nowadays, she has a happy medium, healthy figure, but since I have a sort of waif build, she'll still sometimes talk about how she's "heavy" and needs to exercise more. (granted, she focuses more on gaining muscle than in getting skinnier, but still). It's sort of ironic because I get a lot of crap for being "too skinny". In another story, my friend had auditioned for this play at my school where she got cast as Susan Storm from X-Men (the story was sort of a huge crossover clusterfuck). Hours later, this guy from our grade who thinks he knows more about theatre than our teacher begins to complain at how my friend isn't fit for the role because she's too big and instead it should be cast as another girl who also looked more or less like Susan. Said girl is a model and definitely looks like one. However, it wouldn't be so bad if he hadn't caused such drama out of this (said guy isn't that good-looking or thin himself anyway...). Just proves how overly critical and shallow some people can be.

Where this troper lives, it is rare to find females of an "average" build. They are either Hollywood Thin or grossly obese. As a result, anyone who ''is'' of an average-to-small build usually gets lumped in with the obese people and are frequently bullied for being fat, even if they're a perfectly healthy weight (it's a rather outspoken and bitchy community). Just as a general note, BMI is not a particularly good indicator of healthiness, or physical appearance. It doesn't take into account body composition, and isn't very good outside of a certain height range, so muscular people as well as the tall tend to be overestimated (Dwight Howard, according to BMI, is on the upper end of overweight). In contrast, if you're very short, BMI will tend to overestimate what a healthy weight for you is. In addition, it's perfectly possible to be at a great BMI and look terrible, although exercise and a better diet will usually fix that pretty easily.

Not too long ago, this troper got in an altercation with a teenage girl who almost backed into her car, and over the course of the argument got called 'fat'. Not only am I a very short, flat-chested size one, the girl herself was obviously heavier than me, though by no means overweight herself. I'm torn between amusement and outright disturbance at a.) the fact that this kid that thought it had any relevance to the fact that she almost, you know, ''backed into my car'', and b.) that she seemed to believe it. I mean...what.

This troper had a rather interesting incident with a very skinny girl in a Target once. While I was shopping for back to school, passing by another teenager, she said quite clearly, "Fattie." Keep in mind that I had recently lost 30 pounds, lost my childhood chubbiness, and was a size 9. Fast forward to two years later, where I'm still a size 9 despite exercising and eating right. I'm pretty fucking sure I'm at a healthy weight, despite BMI telling me that I am "slightly overweight." Always knew it was a piece of shit. Troper has taught in various Asian countries, is 5'3 and anywhere from an American size 14 to 18, and knows she's more on the {{BBW}} end than HollywoodPudgy. And when you are a larger-sized American in Asia, people do everything from poke your belly and/or arm fat to asking you if you're pregnant. She's used to it. But what floored her was one of her kindergardeners - a six year old girl, who was perfectly proportionate for her age - coming into her office and bursting into tears because her mother said she was "too fat" and needed to go on a diet.

Most of the weight's in her hips and thighs, which she would be okay with on its own, but she also kind of has a gut, which, when she gets down or has recently been hit in the face with media-thin girls, she starts hating and feeling fat. It's really not fun, so she utterly loathes this trope.

This troper briefly worked as a dishwasher in a restaurant, and while the job sucked, it did have the perk that the chef was constantly telling her she was too skinny and needed to eat more. Her other job was at a coffee shop in a mall, with two tiny Asian coworkers, where half the customers were mall employees decked out in designer clothes from the shops they worked in. For what it's worth, the troper is 5'7", weighs 140, and has wide hips, D-cup boobs and a narrow waist. "Skinny" isn't the right description, but neither is "fat". She just wishes she could find pants that fit.

I have twice heard people remark that their surroundings make them not feel fat anymore. In fairness, one was at a station where most people will have spent more than 2 hours per day on a train while the other was a Taiwanese woman in England. Seems the Taiwanese average is a lot thinner than the British average.

This troper is more of a Foglio Girl, with the HartmanHips but requiring some undergarment assistance to achieve the MostCommonSuperPower. At 5'4", that doesn't leave a lot of room for extra weight, but even at her skinniest, she still hears the kids in middle school reminding her that she is an obese cow unworthy of male attention. Watching a US size eight actress treated like she is Shamu the killer whale does not help.

This troper (male) is genuinely morbidly obese (400+ at 6'0") and does a lot of clothes shopping out of a catalog (6x shirt size, 64" waist are not common sizes in stores). And in a catalog dedicates to clothing for the obese... everything is modeled by rail-thin male clothing models. It's real fun trying to dress in a somewhat stylish manner when you don't even know what the clothing will look like on your frame.

This troper used to be very secure in her body image. I used to be a competitive swimmer and weighed 86 lbs at 5'0". My BMI was 16.8, which was, on the charts, pretty clearly underweight, but for the most part, I was treated as average. When I quit swimming, I put on weight over the next several years and am now 112 lbs at the same height--BMI 21.9, which is apparently perfectly average. However, I've become terribly insecure now because ever since I quit swimming, my parents constantly make rude comments about my weight and imply constantly that I am morbidly obese and still gaining weight. I have no idea what is considered a good weight any more, and am now generally terrified of putting on any form-fitting clothing.

Your current height/weight sounds pretty cute :) I'm 5 feet and 110 pounds (BMI 21.64), very close to yours, and I look perfectly fine, so it should look good on you too. If anything, 21.9 BMI you sounds way more attractive than 16.8 BMI you. If your parents are making rude comments, don't listen.

I'm 5'4 with a very small frame (my bras have a 32 band size), impressive MostCommonSuperpower and HartmanHips. I used to have some borderline eating disorder habits and depression made them worse. IGotBetter with the weight issues, but the depression continued to affect my eating. When I hit something like 115 I found myself looking in the mirror and being kind of grossed out (my ribs were beginning to show, yuck), and started actively trying to gain weight. Ten or so months later? 150lbs and I look great. Seriously, I have never really been happy with how I looked, but now I'm incredibly confident in my appearance (other parts, not so much). I laughed my ass off when my BMI was calculated in the "overweight" range. So what if my stomach's not flat and my thighs touch (OH THE HORROR)? I look GOOD.

Also, I'm very attracted to women, but the HollywoodThin need not apply. Looking unhealthy is not sexy.

Fat or thin, which is it!? Must depend on which part they look at.

My weight confuses me daily. I'm 5'8/9", just shy of/on 12 stone (175 pounds?) last time I checked, and my BMI says I'm 26, which is "at risk of being overweight". I wear a 12/14 (in UK sizes, not US) and lots of people consider me skinny/slim/healthy... but I don't have the flattest stomach or perfectly toned limbs (though I exercise) so seeing girls at my college taller and thinner than me makes me feel really fat. :( I can't blame it on MostCommonSuperpower either, because I'm a 36C. Fat!? That's nothing. This troper used to be 117 pounds at 4'11". She lost weight over time but still, no one called her fat during that time. (The school clinic did say she was overweight, but their scale was broken and added '5 pounds' to your actual weight.)

In this troper's class, out of about 38 people, 95 percent are over 5'1" and under 100 pounds. And they 'still' think they're fat and compare their 'leg sizes'. This troper is 5'0.5" and 107 pounds, and she doesn't think she's fat, although in truth she is a bit overweight.

My best friend, a 12-year-old, 5'3, 90 pound girl with a small frame. I have never once seen her finish a meal. Not even the crappy school lunches the boys need to get two of. And yet she still says she's fat.

My older sister, who was 19 at the time, ate nothing but a grape and a container of cottage cheese for a month one time, and only because our mother made her. She is 5'10 with a large frame and weighed around 115 pounds.

My older brother when he was 16. He was 6'4 with a mid-sized frame. He weighed 120 pounds. He was almost kicked out of his boarding school. He decided to gain muscle in the end.

My mother occassionally has a bout of this. She is 5'7 with a medium frame and weighs 110 pounds at most.

And finally, this tropette herself. I have been stuck in puberty since age 8. I am 5'6 with a medium frame. My BMI is 22.6. I weigh 140 pounds and am currently on the brink of anorexia. (Damn classmates...) What can I say? It runs in the family.
