This troper is from western New York (near the Great Lakes), and travels frequently, and thus loathes this trope. Every time she tells people she's from New York, they automatically think New York City. Umm, no. New York City is a six hour drive from my hometown.
#13719
@/RadioactiveZombie found out the hard way why everyone is enamored with New York. '''IT'S SO DAMN INTERESTING.''' And he wishes he could go back.
#13720
Please, we'd love to have you back.
#13721
Yes, we'd love to have your wallet, I mean you back. Especially in Harlem. Come for the sights, stay because you've been shanked on the street and left to bleed out in a gutter after being stripped of your valuables.
#13722
OP - Ahahahah. You're funny.
#13723
This troper, a native to New York, finds you offensive!
#13724
This Troper returns to NYC every two years... and we've hardly seen anything!
#13725
This troper LIVES in NYC....and he's hardly seen anything!
#13726
It's actually easy to slip into overlooking stuff if you get into a shower-work-dinner-sleep routine. Having two girlfriends from elsewhere (consecutively, of course, not concurrently) has helped this native Brooklynite troper tremendously in exploring the city.
#13727
Dude! Me too! This troper never got to see so much of New York's nightlife as when hanging out with or dating someone from out of town.
#13728
This troper lives less than two hours north and has a deep aversion to NYC.
#13729
Your fault for living upstate.
#13730
Well, we don't like Boston either!!! (That's totally a joke, btw)
#13731
This troper, as you can read on his page, is mentally a New Yorker. His Noir/Cthulhu stories feature a New Yorker protagonist, while taking place somewhere else (for now). Of course, he Does The Research.
#13732
I originally had the capital of Earth in a Sci-Fi novel I'm writing set as NYC, due to it being the largest city on the planet. After seeing this trope, however, and realizing my book was heading into ClicheStorm territory, I tried multiple other locations. In the last few drafts it has been London, due to AuthorAppeal (I'm a big fan of British culture in general).
#13733
Actually, it's the third largest. Tokyo and Jakarta are ahead of it.
#13734
This troper is working on a Web Serial about a SuperTeam. Three of the members are New Yorkers, and he's NOT changing it. For balance, DaChief is from Seattle, and another member is from Boston.
#13735
This troper's mother lived in Manhattan for 3 years during the TaxiDriver era, at the height of the city's social decay. She hated it, and never went back. He grew up in a bland exurb in Florida, listening to her talk about how New York will always be a massive WretchedHive, and that having to live there is a FateWorseThanDeath. Ironically, he grew into an architecture & urban culture nerd who can't wait to see the buildings, urbanism and cultural scene there. He's still yet to visit the city, but he's hoping he'll get to soon.
#13736
This troper is a native New Yorker, and while he tries to mix it up, the city tends to crop up in his stories.
#13737
This troper was born and raised in New York (I live in North Carolina now... long story and this is not the place for it), and wishes I could go back. Whenever I watch a show set in NY that uses establishing shots I can usually see the apartment complex where I grew up (and my parents still live) and jokingly say "I miss ''my'' city." However, I may have a chance to go back and visit my parents soon (Summer 2010).
#13738
as a resident of New York (staten island) this troper thinks that new york is indeed the center of the universe
#13739
This native Brooklynite regrets to inform you that Staten Island barely qualifies as New York, much less the center of the universe. ;)
#13740
Now, now, now fellas. Why pick on Staten Island when it's so much easier (and more fun) to pick on New Jersey????
#13741
Because Staten Island is basically New Jersey on steroids. Okay, more steroids. And hair gel, spray-on tan and Axe body spray. You want guidoes? One-third of Staten [[strike:Island]] Italy is Italian, including three ''JerseyShore'' cast members. Smelly pollution? Used to have the Fresh Kills Landfill. {{Suburbia}}? You just described about 90% of Staten Island. Point is, for most New Yorkers, Staten Island is an easy target because it's closer, and because it's actually part of the city.
#13742
One of the reason this toper is going to start a petition to sell Staten Island to Jersey. In exchange for Hoboken and Jersey City, of course.
#13743
This Australian Troper had spent his whole life surrounded by fiction that treated New York like the centre of the universe, the only place to be, the greatest place in the world, etc. etc. As a teenager, he began to sneer at the idea... while all the time wishing he could go there. With a mixture of high expectations and snarkiness, he finally did go to New York... and found that everything ever said about it being the best place in the world was absolutely true. Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, indeed.
#13744
Ya call that a knife? THIS is a knife!
#13745
This troper is not terribly fond of the city, mostly due to disliking cities in general but also because most people have this impression that New York State consists entirely of one large city. No offense to you city people (or maybe some offense, considering how many city people call Poughkeepsie "Upstate NY"), but I'm not in any hurry to be lumped in with you guys. It might just be a Poughkeepsie thing, though. We hate all of you big cities. Especially all of New Jersey D:<
#13746
We tried to secede. Have the north half of the state be called "Buffalo." You wouldn't let us. Something to do with our tax money, apparently. I suppose you can't run a state on colleges and prisons alone, Poughkeepsie. ;)
#13747
This troper is writing an AffectionateParody about every movie set in New York. It includes SexAndTheCity, TheTakingOfPelham123, OnTheTown, KingKong, TaxiDriver and the films of WoodyAllen.
#13748
This troper lives in New York, and while loves it for its diversity and the fact that it isn't boring, I really wish my school wasn't an hour commute and that the people on the subways were more sane.
#13749
This troper had the time of his life in New York. Maybe I didn't see King Kong or drink Cosmopolitans, but at least I went to my first Rocky Horror. And every day there just was something to do.
#13750
This Troper is moving there the second she graduates
#13751
This troper lives in Queens, and thus has never found anything cool about it. Then he went to Manhattan on a field trip, and noticed how badass NYC is. He wants to live in Manhattan once he moves out, if he hasn't already immigrated to Canada.
#13752
There are parts of Queens that I believe might cause you to have a different viewpoint. Long Island City comes to mind.
#13753
Averted by this troper in several ways. Everything he's written or is going to write is ''NOT'' set in New York City. Though to be fair, ''none'' of the things he's written or will write take place in any cities in excess of a million people (if they're Western countries, that is. Or Japan. Examples: Seattle, Vladivostok, Eastern Oregon, Napa, Detroit, Tulsa). Even cities referenced wont be super big cities (examples: Pittsburgh, Guelph, Kitchener, Ottawa/Gatineau, Baltimore, Leeds, Sarajevo) and he tries to do as much research as he can even if he hasn't been there. (Not that this will improve their most likely crap quality, but still) He also gets ''really'' tired of hearing about New York and L.A., especially considering he's been able to 90% of the things you can do in New York City in {{Seattle}}, just on a smaller scale. He also never plans to live there, though he wouldn't mind visiting.
#13754
This troper suffers from NY-itis in spades. Almost all of his fanfics end up going to NY, mentioning NY, or having at least ONE smart-ass Brooklynite traveling to Japan to shake things up a bit. But, when you consider just how awesome Brooklyn is, and by extention the rest of the NY Metropolitan Area, it makes perfect sense. Having lived here all my life, it's a real adventure. Mix in some magic, awesome tech, and three dozen anime girls, and you've got it MADE!!!
#13755
This troper has lived in the NYC metropolitan area her entire life and quite dislikes the city. She can't understand the hype around it. She thinks it's rather boring, dirty, and the people are horrible. She really can't figure out why people think it's the greatest city in the world, especially when places like Boston exist (OH YES I WENT THERE).
