JerkJock

May as well start the page off. I'm a bit surprised we don't have one already. When ThisTroper was in high school, most of the football team and a handful of stars of other sports would have qualified, but the one I really remember was Sam. He fit the trope to a T, a brutal, brainless thug from an otherwise very nice family, (I was pretty good friends with the rest of them, actually,) who took particular pleasure in tormenting anyone who didn't know their place in the social hierarchy. As in, the football players were on top and everyone else belongs below them. He'd brag about putting things in his body that he shouldn't have, and doing things with girls that he ''really'' shouldn't have, and as far as I'm aware never got in trouble for any of it. After graduation I moved away for a few years, and when I got back I ended up hearing that he had averted the usual conclusion to this trope pretty hard. Sam had found God,
cleaned up his act, and turned into a genuinely nice guy who did a lot of good in the community, for a very short time. Then he ran headfirst into another classic villain trope by
dying in a plane crash. There was a
very moving dedication to him at our ten-year reunion. Go figure.

Played straight by exactly one guy at this troper's old high school; everyone else who played sports at my school were all around very cool people. Hell, I even dated a cheerleader for a while, and I wasn't exactly what you'd call "cool".

This troper knew a guy like this, except smarter. Thankfully, he is serving time in juvie for
trying to rape a girl)
#73891
"Thankfully" are you serious? how is it in any way good that he had to assault some one before the world saw his true colours?
#73892
This troper's high school generally played it straight and at the same time averted it. There were jerks on most teams, but surprisingly, the football team didn't have many of them, mostly because it was drilled out of them in TrainingFromHell. When I joined one of the teams, and then following a depressing break up, I...slipped a little in morality and started acting a little like a jerk.
#73893
Never met any, in fact they were usually nicer than average. Of course if you were friends with them they could be dicks but they were never that bad.
#73894
Having played on my high school football team, I could say with great pleasure that I completely averted this trope. Of course, any would be jerks on our team really didn't have much to say considering we were always really bad, so we ended up the butt of every joke at school. Furthermore, the jocks were never the biggest, baddest guys on the campus at any point. That would be the handful of gangbangers we invariably had, but even they were always outnumbered by the rest of the student body, and since they were all bused in anyway, they couldn't really do much. If anything, any of the dicks on the football team were usually dickish to other guys on the team, and said dicks rarely got much playing time in the first place.

this troper has been the victim of bullying by two such jocks one in high school, one in midle. in hs, it was a football player. he hit her in the face with an umbrella and threw books at her- in class- and the teacher was too afraid to say anything. in middle school, the track/ everything else star made fun of her dead hamster and once locked her in a closet- on a friday after school. he was so popular that no one believed he would ever do such a thing.

This troper was one of the few openly gay boys in his high school. The rest were suited (and inclined) to fitting in fairly well. I... was not. I've no idea why, but people who use words like transcendental and whereupon and sanguine seem to invite mockery from brutes who seem to think that the ability to kick a ball and mouth off to teachers equates to free license to do as they please. This troper endured several years of bullying until he gave someone a black eye with a well-thrown shoe (talk about being
dressed to kill) and split someone's lip with a hardcover edition of ''Twilight of the Idols''. No, I'm not a NietzscheWannabe!

A few people at this troper's school could qualify as this. Although they're not quite as unbearable as some of the other examples here, and some of them
don't actually mean to antagonize anyone. They just don't realize how aggrivating their behavior can be sometimes.
#73899
This Troper has to put up with a school that there is enough {{jerk jocks}} to be used as currency, lucklily {{sisesquiepedalian loquaciousness}} helps for insulting them without them knowing, being the {{class clown}} and {{smart guy}} but also athletic( 50m frestyle in 36 seconds) i take them out easily.

One of the guys in this troper's graduating class was like this. He played football, talked back to teachers, was one of the nominees for prom king, and routinely taunted this troper in the lone class they shared together, calling her "Thicklet" and "Gorilla". Other classmates dismissed his {{Jerkass}} behavior as him "just playing with you."

This troper found out by chance that his own dad was a jerk-jock while in high-school. Unlike the stereotypical basketball or football player, his dad was a powerlifter... Who put a black belt in 3 martial arts head-first in a dumpster.

This troper knew two jocks who were a subversion of this trope. Yeah they were big, totally into sports and not the brightest bulbs in the box, but they were actually pretty nice. They were kind of like a pair of big, friendly, dumb dogs. Anyway, during the first aid unit of this troper's Phys Ed class, she had fainted during a somewhat gory video about the proper procedures for heavy bleeding and amputations. This troper had managed to get out of her desk and to the door of the Phys Ed portable when she fainted and the first to respond were the two jocks. They gallently came over, got this troper into the recovery position and helped her to the nurse's office after she regained conciousness. They then stayed there until this troper was well enough to go back to class. Talk about a crowning moment of heartwarming!

this troper knew one, the boy she sat next to in history was on the school football team. he always tried to get a rise out of her, calling her ' white slut' and 'bitch' and anything else, insulting her religion and her ideals. this troper stayed pretty stoic about it, waiting until she got home to cry, finally taking the age old advice of 'just ignore it' to heart. one day, one of her 'friend' finally, finally, stood up for her, telling him to lay off. IN THE MIDDLE OF CLASSS: #QUOTE# jerk jock: " Why should I? Look at her, it's not as if she's got feelings or anything.I mean, hey." This troper burst into tears, screamed at him, and fled. he got in absolutely no trouble.

Not sure if he's a big athlete, but there was one freshman when I was a senior who really embodies the Jerk Jock persona. He's like a real life Gaston! He's a complete jerk-asshole to a lot of people, myself included, yet every girl in the school from the freshmen to seniors swoons over him because of his attractiveness.
#73905
That sounds like AllGirlsWantBadBoys in full swing.
#73906
After doing some research, I found out he's a player on the school lacrosse team. So, he is in fact a Jerk Jock.
#73907
There were plenty of these in middle school and high school where I was, often overlapping with ScaryBlackMan. One of the reasons I didn't figure out I was
bisexual until years after I graduated had to do with their tendency to target guys who didn't fit their hypermasculine standard. I repressed a lot of my feelings because of that and the Christian Fundamentalist phase I was going through at the time.

This Troper had to deal with one in high school. He would make fun of his acne, his lack of a girlfriend, his light weight and non-Ivy choice of college. And he would try to physically block him from entering a classroom so he'd be marked tardy.
And he had a very attractive girlfriend!
#73909
This Trope had to deal with one in middle school. He would act like a stereotypical Jerk Jock, but I didn't take anything to heart. In fact, I hardly cared about anything he said, mainly because I was a foreign student and I did not grow up in such an environment. Therefore, I had my own ways of dealing with him, mainly making fun of him and insulting his intelligence. There were times he tried to get violent, but I always managed to talk him out of it.
#73910
This troper's local jocks all play with the trope in various ways, but for the most part, the only people that would otherwise fit the trope are not jocks. Luckily, I'm not the only one with very little respect for either jock or non-jock jerks.

Just about all of the jocks at my transfer school were assholes with the exceptions of the ones that transferred with me, the worst of the lot were the ones a grade ahead of me they would mock me, make fun of me, throw things at me, steal my supplies, push me around, and try to hit me for no reason (I was able to dodge or block their hits most of the time), they were among the reasons why my high school years there were a living hell and it was difficult to make friends at that school without them betraying you to hang out with them.
