As promised, I made it to the 9am lecture this morning, even if I did doze all the way through it. CH was one of the most eccentric lectures ever, with Cole-Hamilton talking about how the Post Office Tower's location was a governmental secret and advising us not to bother filling our lungs with ozone as it would kill us. Sound advice. I have completed the lab sessions as well - did a quick three IR spectra and a decomposition temperature determination. I also asked Iain, the technician, what his inspiration was when he put together the GLC video. A bit of background information on that... We were all shown a moderately to worryingly insane Powerpoint presentation on Gas-Liquid Chromatography rather early on last year, involving a whole lot of exaggerated sound effects, transitions, fades, all interspersed with Dr Seth's voice (which is the aural equivalent of Nytol) droning on about vague bits of machinery. Apparently he had just discovered Powerpoint at that stage and just wanted to cram in as much as possible. Graeme Barker was right when he described it "the most disturbing experience of my life"... I have received, so far today, no less than three requests for the use of my printer. It seems that everyone's suddenly remembered their deadlines - I don't mind, I just found it rather funny. Surely, though, a better way would be to hand in essays online rather than waste paper having to print them out and then trudging all the way across town to hand them in? DCS had the right idea there, I don't know why other departments don't have that as well. 2003-12-12 16:32:00 1 comment |
