IllGirl

This troper can qualify as an Ill Man, as ever since he was young, he has had weak lungs as a complication brought about by catching pneumonia when he was a mere 3 months of age, effectively caused by being a premie. Because of this, I have really bad asthma and upper respiratory problems, and, on many occasions, has come close to death due to an absence of asthma medication. Hospital visits have been plentiful for me, with the average number of hospital visits being at least once or twice a month on part of said complications. If that's not bad enough, he's plagued with constant stomach/backaches due to this as well. I also seem to suffer from really bad allergies, which complicate it further by causing bronchial infections from time to time. He also seems to get tired quite consistly, which is possibly caused by blood sugar problems coupled with his chronic breathing complications, and don't get him started on his asthma attacks.....

This troper's twin sister died of leukemia when we were 8 years old. To my recollection, she exhibited many qualities of the fictional IllGirl, as far as personality and appearance goes; though admittedly I'm not immune to a combination of the NostalgiaFilter and a simple twinnish desire to remember her in the best possible light.

I have a weird blood disease type dealio, which makes a variety of things difficult for me, though the consequence is usually just feeling extremely light-headed and incoherent. My lungs are also two sacks of crap, due to asthma and who knows what the hell else, so I'm prone to coughing attacks that really freak out my friends and teachers. AND my heart hates my guts too, and is prone to randomly cause a great deal of pain. For the first part of my life I've had weakly injections that lead to my {{Fear of needles}} though it's not much of an issue now. ALSO despite this, I'm a {{genki girl}}-{{cloudcuckoolander}} so I guess I defy the trope I bit..?

It all started for this troper (ElegantVamp, I don't know WHY Tvtropes won't link to my profile! >__<#) when she was born. 1 lb, 14 oz, 16 weeks premature. I guess being a micro-preemie has a lot to do with my various health issues. There's always something wrong with me, I've grown accustomed to hospitals, they're like a third home! I'm allergic to a lot of things, and can't go outside during a Code Red/Orange. I have Ehler's Danlose Syndrome, a rare skin disease, so I have a lot of scars and stretch-marks all over my body, and my skin stretches like elastic, so I probably won't be able to give birth the natural way. My lungs are two sacks of crap (because of my asthma and lung damage) and the medicine consists of rescue inhaler, Advair, Predisone, AND Epipen, just in case. My teeth are royally screwed, one kid during an anime convention this year, thought I was a vampire because of my teeth (erupted canines)! She needs to get braces this year, during her LAST YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL. Somehow, I also managed her herniate her back and needs surgery to remove the disc. I failed the vision test for getting a Learner's Permit THREE TIMES, and nearly lost her eyesight before becoming a toddler. I can qualify for legally blind if my vision were slightly worse than it already is.

I probably qualify as an Ill Girl. I'm allergic to nearly everything, making everyday life a constant experience of dodging bullets, where the bullets are utterly innocuous things like ''potatoes'' and ''oranges'' that can leave me embracing the porcelain god for hours. I also have extremely sensitive skin, so I'm known to break out in hives from ''rain''. Public swimming is basically out, as chlorine will turn my skin into a wonderland of rashes and bizarre scaly patches. It's actually taking me over five years to graduate from university, because I'm constantly missing classes to go to doctor's appointments, or due the fact that I'm having a flare-up and must be within two steps of a toilet at all times. In fact, while writing this entry, I basically had to get up three times to run to the bathroom. Somewhat averted though, as I suffer from allergies, which isn't nearly as romantic as tuberculosis, and the effects are decidedly less poetic than dainty tissues covered in blood from my lungs. Also, I'm not a cute girl. A side effect of that many allergies is that I don't really absorb most of my food, so what little I can absorb is basically turned into fat. Making me a chubby girl who eats probably a third of what much much thinner friends eat, and absolutely no junk food whatsoever.

My best friend caught scarlet fever as a little girl (don't ask me how the hell she managed that one, since we live in the U.S.) and spent about a year and a half trying to recover from it, a good eight months of which she spent mostly bedridden.
#69311
No idea how she caught Scarlet fever? It's caused by freaking ''strep,'' there used to be a time when almost ''every'' kid who got strep throat or a strep skin infection got scarlet fever, it rarely ever appears on it's own.
#69312
However, I've had scarlet fever, and with modern antibiotics, it doesn't usually take eight months in bed (or one month, for that matter) to recover from. Are you sure this was just scarlet fever? Whatever it was, it definitely qualifies your friend as an IllGirl.
#69313
My ex-girlfriend qualifies. While not bed-ridden, she was frail and sickly, and it seemed that she caught a new disease every month. Through all this, she insisted upon going to school, claiming that with her heavy courseload, missing any school would be just too stressful. I ultimately failed to convince her that ''latent pneumonia'' was a perfectly good reason to miss school. The fact that she was also a sweet {{Meganekko}} makes this trope perfect for her. I've noticed that she's been doing better lately, which is fortunate, because I think otherwise she'd work herself to death.
#69314
I think I meet the guidelines for an Ill Man. I have asthma, horrible allergies to grass, flowers and any kind of pollen, I puke if I eat coconut, and I have a condition called Cold Urticaria which is basically an allergy to cold weather. Funny enough, I appear to be a very healthy man who wouldn't show any signs of illness if you walked past me.
#69315
This troper knew a girl who's had dengue fever 4 times and used to faint all the time during swimming lessons.
#69316
I think I qualify for this trope. My immune system is weak, and a simple cough can last for two months. I have rheumatic fever, headaches and I am often dizzy. The worst part is that nobody seems to care.
#69317
Poor {{Woobie}}... :(
#69318
Subtract the rheumatic fever and add on constant injuries caused by CuteClumsyGirl tendencies, and this particular woobie sounds a lot like my friend.
#69319
This....this might be me. plus sleeping issues and headaches.
#69320
Edit: I think I might have asthma... It's becoming difficult to breath normally.
#69321
Erm, maybe I qualify. 1) Born two months premature at 2 lbs...something ounces. 2) Exercise induced asthma. 3) ADHD. 4) Hashimoto's thyroiditis (a precursor to hypothyroidism). 5) A weakened immune system to the point that school (loads of schoolwork) mixed in with my {{Determinator}} qualities further and severely weakened my immunity making me sick (with different illnesses, of course) for 3 months straight, so far - hope to use next semester to get somewhat better, esp. because I have three sports to maintain... Also, since I get sick so frequently, most of my friends, acquaintances, etc. stop completely believing me, so to avoid the status of the SympatheticSue I stopped mentioning - much less complaining - about any illness. 6) Allergic to penicillin, coffee, honey, beer (teehee...actually to be more specific, brewer's yeast), and a bunch of other stuff. 7) Receive blood tests every six months minimum (I'm only 16...). So I guess I qualify, probably, but it's not as bad as others.

Hello, other premature Tropers! This one has quite a different story. This Tro- '''I''' used to be crazy sick all the time do to medications for various things and a missing kink in my digestive system. The kink was supposed to keep waste going only one way... didn't get that fixed until I was 5. I learned basic things like walking slower than others, which ended up cumulating in being night-time toiled trained at the perfectly fine young age of '''ten'''. (I'm blaming walking on the heavy IV pole.) Even so, over the years I've gotten better, and am now almost in AvertedTrope territory. I've got a slightly interned eye, mild scoliosis, and AttentionDeficitOohShiny now. And a nose that makes way too much mucus with seasonal change. (I think I'll put this under IGotBetter, too).

Congratulations!
#69324
This tropette, in the past. Since my lungs are weak ''and'' I inherited allergies from my mom, my strongest early memories as a little girl revolve around coughing up all day in winter, spending more than one weekend in bed and often having to keep a vaporizer in my bedroom at night, much to the annoyance of my less sickly sister. I'm still prone to get colds and springs are absolute ''nightmares'' without pills, but thanks to my meds it's nowhere as bad as it used to be.
#69325
This troper's baby cousin is an Ill Boy. His leg did not grow right before he was born, and he has nerve problems and has to get so much surgery he has a giant scar running down his back.
#69326
This troper was had chronic health issues since she was 3. I suffer with severe Asthma which has recently been speculated to possibly be something worse (Cystic Fibrosis. Though my trusted GP doesn't quite think so and would be quite surprised if it is considering that in his opinion, I look fairly OK for one that would have had CF for nearing 24 years without treatment if it indeed was CF). I also have a collagen disease that has caused some of my internal organs to prolapse in my abdominal region. The only thing holding said organs in their places is mesh implants attached to those organs and then fused to my sacrum. My genetics counciller is inclined to believe that it is either Marfan Syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Type 2 as I also have hypermobile joints, genu valgum, flat feet and dental crowding as well as poorly-healing skin that produces poor scarring whenever I am wounded or operated upon. Over the past 17 years, I have undergone 25 surgeries under anaesthesia, most of which were proven later to have been performed negligently and has had countless investigative proceadures and appointments. Apart from that, I extremely rarely get sick from contagious illness but chest infections/pneumonia occur too frequently for my liking.
#69327
I used to be a real sickly kid, due to my asthma. I was also born with a few defects in my eyes, corrective surgery has healed some of that, however...I can never wear contact lenses. I've gotten better over the years but of course the asthma is still there, plus I've gotten bronchitis for the first time recently. It's awkward to explain to my friends on how over-the-counter cough syrup just doesn't work on the coughs I get.
#69328
This troper was called the "Sick guy" after catching Pneumonia during 2010. That was the ''same year'' I had to do Landscape Plants, which required us to do nature walks all the time. At work, I had to be put on register because I couldn't touch food and repeatedly coughed mouthfuls of mucus on the ground or in the trash can. Ironically, I have freakishly large lungs like my grandpa so when we got pneumonia, that only ''slowed us down''. Heck, theo nly erason my grandpa really got weak near the end was because of the other cancer stuff.

This Tropette isn't an ''Ill'' Girl, per se; she was born with asthma and moderate pollen allergies, so breathing during springtime is pure Hell for her. ''Any'' kind of pollen can trigger the reaction - grass, weed, tree, flower. You name it, she'll temporarily gain an Incurable Cough of Suffering along with itchy, watery eyes, postnasal drip, VIOLENT sneezing, and wheezing. Worse part is, it's not even cute, like you'd expect; it's just painful. Anime has ''lied'' to us. hardline Before you return to {{Ill Girl}}, you might want to get that cough checked out...
