In this troper's local Church there are not one, but two prominent women with typically male names: the senior pastor's wife, Jo, and a missionary, Kevin, who is very active. This comes to hilarious effect when they are listed with their respective spouses in bulletins or in passing comments without any explanation. It's gotten to the point where people do it on purpose just to see the reactions of the uninformed.

If this troper had a little sister, her name would be Jordan, according to my parents. They named me Ashleigh (With The Wind}} yes, Dead}} that is, in fact, a guy's name). I wonder if they actually only wanted sons....

My understanding is that while "Ashley" is a unisex name, "Ashleigh" is usually female.

Original tropette here. Ashley is among those names (like Leslie, Shirley, and Meredith) that was originally just a guy's name that along the way became more popular as a girl's name. in addition, I actually recently discovered a (male) humorist named Ashleigh Brilliant, as well.

This troper's Grandmother is named Constance, she hates it and everyone has always called her Terry.

This troper is Alexandra, but goes by Alex because people kept calling her Alexander. It wasn't the gender confusion that annoyed her, though -- she actually loves the ambiguity of Alex -- she's just a pedant who couldn't stand being called by the wrong name.

One day, my brother and I were sitting in a Denny's. I asked him if he was still a virgin. He said no. I asked him who he had sex with. He said "Pat". A bit puzzled, I asked if he meant Patricia or something, but no, he said he meant "Patrick". :-/

My great-grandfather had seven daughters, and he wanted a son very badly. So when Jacqueline was born, he decided her name was "Jackie". And that's all anyone ever called her.

Well, every Jackie I've ever met or heard of was female except one. (He falls into the "heard of" category...)

This troper was friends with a girl named Sam during elementary school. He also knew a Peyton, and he's not sure if that's a guy, girl, or neutral name, so he's not sure if she counts. Actually, until fourth grade, he didn't have a lot of unambiguously named friends...
