This troper intentionally subverted this in a short story she once wrote. The main character stated several times how angry he was about things that had happened earlier in the story. This was for his own benefit, though, as he had been extremely confused and had to actively figure out that the feeling he felt was anger. The reader, however, realised from the beginning that his behaviour (that he himself found irrational but but didn't know how to stop) throughout the story came from anger and hurt.
