OopNorth
#99954
This troper's boyfriend is from Oop North, and considering that the troper in question is American, she has a really hard time explaining and/or imitating this accent when talking about him. This has a lot to do with the fact that, as far as most of her friends are concerned, BritainIsOnlyLondon. She finds the accent and the colloquialisms all extremely endearing.
#99955
This troper has been subjected to: "Oh you're from the North? Didn't you guys just get electricity?"
#99956
This troper gets that all the time, and actively encourages it.
#99957
Subverted for this troper, who is currently living in Newcastle (on Tyne, not the other one) and frequently has locals inform him that ''Leeds'' is in the South.
#99958
Oh snap. This troper doesn't want to be a southerner!
#99959
There is a Leeds Castle in Kent somewhere. Once or twice, I've been stopped by tourists asking where the castle is. I point in the relevant direction and say, "head that way for about 200 miles, and ask again."
#99960
I'm pretty sure that it's a truth universally acknowledged that The South begins ten miles below the speaker. This troper has never definitively settled whether he's from the north or the south, and makes do with "the East" (Hunstanton, in Norfolk, if you're interested. Dead level with Stoke.)
#99961
The definition I usually go with is that the North starts around Manchester, and the South below Birmingham. The rest is the Midlands.
#99962
GracieLizzie is from Sunderland, she will correct you if you call her a Geordie. Also her accent is different to most Oop North as her parents sent her to elocution lessons when she was younger. She's been told she sounds "Posh" but she doesn't think so herself.
#99963
This troper, despite growing up in
Rochdale, tends to speak with a South Manchester accent acquired from his dad. This accent isn't much heard in the media, and certainly not in any context actually relating to Manchester, so most people can't place it to any more precision than "somewhere north of London and south of Newcastle".
#99964
A true Rochdale dialect is a hybrid of Mancunian, Lancastrian and Yorkshire that's virtually incomprehensible to most people, ''including'' the troper's family - he was 3 when he moved there so was able to pick it up but they weren't so lucky. ''WaterlooRoad'' substitutes the East Manchester accent and dialect, which sounds similar but is a lot more understandable to people outside the area.
#99965
Yay another Troper from Rochdale...I was actually on WaterlooRoad (as an extra) and talks completely different to everyone else from her area, and acts and dresses differently-although growing up in Kirkholt, the land of the Chav, and being a PerkyGoth thats not hard.

{{Arakhor}} was born in the North, to Northern parents, but has lived almost his entire life in the South and considers himself a Southerner. Just saying.
#99967
How dare you?! You make me sick. It's surely bad enough to be born a Southerner, but to CHOOSE that nationalty?! Yes, I know, but England might as well be divided up.
#99968
This troper is from Salford. However, a combination of going to school in South Manchester and a couple of years living with a pair of Southerners has left him with an accent that can only be described as "generic Northern". He's just grateful for his stubborn insistence on not pronouncing "glass" as "glarse".
#99969
This troper is from Warrington. She does not have the usual Warringtonian accent (see: Kerry Katona, or...actually, really don't) but instead has a rather generic Lancashire accent, which tends to go vaguely Scouse when she's annoyed (due to having studied for a couple of years in Liverpool).
#99970
Hey! Plastic Scouser >:D
#99971
This troper was born in Manchester but moved to Preston when she was 7. She lost her Mancunian accent but never really gained the Preston accent (which is relatively weak compared to surrounding towns anyway). Apparently her voice is now a lot posher since she spends termtime at Cambridge University, but she absolutely refuses to pronounce anything in a Southern sense. She does end up with people (often Americans) asking her if she is from Scotland or Ireland with regularity, and simple words like 'butties', 'dinner', 'tea' and 'brew' cause much confusion with her housemates. And no-one at uni gets why she dislikes Yorkshire: it's traditional (even though her Dad's Yorkshire)!
#99972
Hey, fellow Preston troper. =)
#99973
Hey fellow Preston tropers :D
#99974
This troper's from Sheffield, where you can say "love" to anyone. For example: ''"Excuse me lovie, where is the nearest bus station?''" Or, "''How much for this magazine?''" "''2 pounds, love.''"
#99975
This troper was born near Wigan, and lived near Leigh for 16 years. After a lot of moving, she is now living in Preston. She drops a lot of h's, t's and g's, but doesn't have much of an accent otherwise.
#99976
I live way Oop North near Carlise, and to me most of the above examples aren't northerly.
#99977
This troper's from Birmingham, and thinks it's amusing that she got called Northern the other week by a disgruntled Londoner. She was famous at primary school for her half-Scouse accent, as a result of living in Liverpool until she was four and having a Scouse mom, although now she's pure Brummy
#99978
This troper is from Manchester, but thanks to being raised primarily by watching sitcoms like Blackadder has a strange hybrid of Southern and Mancunian.
#99979
This Troper been living in the UK for the past 3,5 years - almost 3 years she spend in Cheshire and Lancashire, where she is now.She really got used to people around here.Living few months in Bucks she can easily say that Northerners are much friendlier,laid-back and open than those from south.
#99980
Unfortunately still bears some grudge against Scousers (most of those she met were total t*ats) and when drunk, often mocks their accent (good thing no Scouser heard yet a Polish girl do that or she would be sorry).Oddly enough one of her good friends is Scouse

This tropette's family is from Penwortham/Preston/Blackpool/Poulton-le-Fylde/Banff(Scotland) and goes to sixth-form in Leyland. Anybody else from any of those places?
#99982
Runshaw College? I went there for 6th form. And you'll find quite a few Preston/Penwortham entries above.
