This happens in my family quite a lot. Things aren't ''lost'', they're just 'temporarily misplaced'. ''People'' aren't lost either, they're just 'not quite sure of our present location, in relation to where we want to be'. Saying that something wasn't ''broken'', it was just 'in a state of disrepair' may have been taking it a bit far, though...
