HypocriticalFandom
#66218
I tend to see this alot with the
It's Popular, Now It Sucks saying. It seems that the more mainstream something is, the more critical people are at it; while the less mainstream something is, the more it is considered as "TrueArt" and an UnacceptableTarget. Both regardless of actual quality.
#66219
People frequently complain about "originality" without actually defining what it means. Largely, it seems to be a code for "I like it". Works that people seem to dislike (especially popular works) are frequently derided as a ClicheStorm, while works that people seem to like (especially unpopular works) are frequently praised as a "
Tropeless Tale". Never mind that all works have plenty of tropes.
#66220
ConsoleWars, ComputerWars, and other hardware and software debates of the like are full of them. One fandom can accuse the other of any flaws their competition have. But if their favorite OS/Console/Etc. does the same thing or something similar, it is often ignored. For instance, {{Microsoft}} is the evil empire, and Bill Gates is Satan incarnate, while other corporations — {{Sony}}, {{Nintendo}}, {{Apple}}, {{Google}} etc. — can be just as shifty and underhanded in their quest for your money without being subjected to such vehement opposition and criticism.
#66221
The hypocrisy about the new wave of motion technology is so hard to miss only the most narrow-minded fans ignore it. When the wii was first announced, Microsoft and Sony fans shunned it, thinking motion gaming and casual play-styles would be the death of the video game...come the Kinect and Move, the same people are singing praises about how motion technology is the wave of the future and how casual gaming will save the consoles.
#66222
Not exactly. Microsoft received a lot of criticism for the amount of focus Kinect received this past E3.
#66223
I see this alot with Indie stuff. If ''anything'' is Indie, mentioning any flaws in the work, namely stuff like bad writing, hammy acting, FakeDifficulty in games, or how it's practically just a FollowTheLeader work will often earn you a lecture on how it's okay for Indie stuff to do it simply ''because'' it's Indie. Had anything that doesn't have the Indie Label on it do that even in the slightest bit, it'd be criticized and bashed to hell. And if it's pretentious waffle, if it's Indie...it's okay, it's ''supposed'' to do that. If anything not indie does it, it's shoving the pretentious waffle in your face, pseudo-intellectual, and a mockery of anything.

Online gaming is SeriousBusiness. It's just something we have to deal with no matter if we like it or not. Ironically, you can find in online forums in occasion that some fans claim
their favorite service or game is immune to this (Users of PlaystationNetwork and PC games like TeamFortress2 are such common offenders). This is because their communities are small, compared to the bigger communities like Xbox Live and World of Warcraft where since they are more popular services, you can find more {{Griefer}} players utilizing {{GIFT}}. This naturally has led to the smaller services getting mis-credited as being "Serious Business free", and fans of these services will use the NoTrueScotsman fallacy to deny that {{GIFT}} exists in their service
example, Griefer on Xbox Live? That's clearly ''all'' of them. Griefer on PlayStation Network? They don't represent ''all'' gamers on PSN.. However being a small community doesn't mean that they are not immune to having FanDumb players that take things way too seriously. Remember, {{GIFT}} can happen anywhere on the internet, so don't be surprised that in any game, a JerkAss {{Troll}} will try and ruin your fun. Your best thing to do is just ignore them, leave, or kick them out.
#66225
One of the funny things about this is that if anything, {{GIFT}} perhaps began around in the early days of PC gaming. But it seems that these days since Live is more popular, PC (and Playstation and Nintendo) gamers shift the blame of the {{Griefer}} towards Xbox Live users, whom shift the blame to CallOfDuty and {{Halo}} users, whom shift the blame at each other. Never mind they are all equally to blame for the griefing mess.
#66226
I find it funny when some people say that a game sucks because "it's too repetitive", "all you're doing is just grinding" or "it takes no skill." Never mind that all games require at least a decent amount of skill to complete and all games get repetitive eventually.
#66227
Quite a few people feel UnwantedHarem shows are sexist against women because of their nature. Of course, in these shows the girls are almost always awesome and likeable, not to mention having varied personalities. Meanwhile the guys have an UnluckyEverydude main and the other men are {{Butt Monkey}}s of some sort or comedy relief characters in general, rarely being half as interesting as the women. The ones that avert this end downplaying the "harem" bit (See: ''{{Negima}}'' or ''RosarioToVampire''). Plus there are always ReverseHarem shows, which oddly go unnoticed and unmentioned.
#66228
In the same note, fighting {{shonen}} aimed at guys (such as ''DragonBall'', ''OnePiece'' and the like) get criticized because women CantCatchUp and are OvershadowedByAwesome. While often true, that ignores not only all the men who are in the same position of being left on the dust, but also the MagicalGirl shows where the guys are on the same situation (''SailorMoon'' and ''MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha'', anyone?).
#66229
Magical girls shows are an issue of their own if they feature a
"nude" TransformationSequence, but said fighting shonen can have their guys on {{Walking Shirtless Scene}}s all day long and no one will bat an eye. Both things can be explained as MultipleDemographicAppeal,
which isn't a bad thing.
#66230
This troper has noticed in the anime community that quite often, fans of different {{shonen}} and/or {{shojo}} series
frequently hate each other and often grasp for straws trying to find something to bitch about in the other series, frequently picking traits their favorite series and most shonen/shojo in general have.
#66231
This tends to happen alot in politics. Every politician flip-flops. Every politician has dirt in their closet. Every politician lies a little. And every politician's followers are convinced that he/she is a TOTAL saint and that it's all the others that are card-carrying Dog Rapists out to besmirch their champion's good name. For instance: Whoever becomes president is bound to be labeled the Antichrist by ''somebody''. Represented quite cleverly
here.
#66232
Nationalistic rivalries. E.g., the common belief that Canada is a nation full of nice folks who watch hockey with the family and will welcome a stranger into their homes for waffles and maple syrup, while the United States is a bunch of imperialistic louts with gun-control issues overlooks the fact that the rural areas of both nations tend to be sleepy little quiet towns, while the urban areas have higher instances of poverty and crime.
#66233
Many will accuse other nations of showing PatrioticFervor, but if their own country does it, it is often ignored regardless if it is just as bad if not worse. For example: Many will routinely criticize American Exceptionalism but will give Eurocentricism a free pass, even if it is basically the same thing but for a different region.
#66234
ValuesDissonance. Controversial subjects can sometimes tend to have differencing views between cultures, but when an example from one country pops up in the international spotlight, it will tend to have people from other countries with differing views accusing the other side of being {{Hypocrite}}s and advocating DoubleStandards, while ignoring the fact that they themselves are actually the {{Hypocrite}}s and DoubleStandard advocators as they too are also committing ValuesDissonance. As for ValuesDissonance itself, let's just say YourMileageMayVary.
#66235
NoTrueScotsman type fallacies are often used in these situations. For example: If an American commits mass murder? ''"That's America for you. A bunch of crazed, violent psychos."'' If a Canadian commits mass murder? ''"Wow, I'm surprised that a Canadian would actually do that."''
#66236
Religious (and non-religious) rivalries. For example, hardcore atheists and Fundamentalist Christians will often accuse the other of being closed-minded and unaccepting of other beliefs - when
they themselves are the same way.
#66237
And, of course, between members of different religions -- to take one example, certain Christian critics of Islam have been quite to denounce the many atrocities that have been committed in Islam's name whilst conveniently forgetting those which have been committed in the name of Christianity, and vice versa.
#66238
And there's rivalries between members of the ''same'' religion. Any religion you can think of is split up into a bunch of different sects, united in that the differences are trivial and ''their'' way of practicing their religion just happens to be the ''right'' way.
#66239
Much like Nationalistic Rivalries, expect to sometimes hear NoTrueScotsman type fallacies. For example: Fundamentalist Islams blow up a building? That's clearly ''all'' of them. Fundamentalist Christian blows up an abortion clinic? They don't represent ''all'' of Christians out there!
#66240
A hardcore religious person will say you're going to Hell or their religion's equivalent of Hell if you don't think the way they do. A hardcore atheist will say you're a delusional sheep if you don't think the way they do, then pat themselves on the back for being so much more "open-minded" than those religious types.
#66241
Yahtzee's FanDumb tends to trash people who follow the magazines and act like ReviewsAreTheGospel - while at the same time, follow Yahtzee's heavily biased (often for comedic effect) word as absolute ''LAW'', enforcing it ''heavily'' on anyone who dares like otherwise.
#66242
Video games in ''general'' have a lot of hypocritical fandoms. You have the people who insist it was RuinedFOREVER with the advent of "casual gaming", when if you mention how many of their favorite games were rather casual in themselves ("Casual" here means "Does not require you to take an eight-weeks correspondence course to even understand the game's controls" or "Does not add three hours to the game time trying to find out where the hell you're supposed to go next"), they'll merely dismiss you and mention about how it was still hard. Mention any FakeDifficulty in any of their games in ''any'' sense and they will not even respond to you at all. Pretty much a case of the NostalgiaFilter.
#66243
And let's not forget the "I want something new and original, I'm tired of the same ol FollowTheLeader games"-type arguments. You have people who want something ''completely'' different out of the next generation of gaming. When we get new franchises and sometimes even new genres or ways to play a game (WiiMote, keyboard, accessories, etc), and they claim that it's all a "Gimmick", refuse to give it a chance because "it is not a game" while games that don't really contribute a lot to the genre and are just StrictlyFormula have gamers ''pounce'' all over them, buy them in truckloads, and endlessly dry-hump them when they were the ones asking for more.
#66244
And then you have others who say "That's not what I wanted" when you mention some stuff that was different. Don't expect anything beyond "Like this game I like, only..." as a response as to what they ''do'' seem to want.
#66245
Just think of where gaming would be today if people reacted the same way to home computer games and home consoles as they are to the Wii and other motion control stuff...the only reason they became such a hit in the first place was ''because gamers actually gave them'' '''''A CHANCE''''', instead of lambasting it as something that will ruin gaming forever by introducing a lot of "non gamers" to the market.
#66246
Nintendo's FanDumb is quite hypocritical. You have people whining that Nintendo doesn't make any new franchises. Mention that, not including the stuff like ''WiiSports'', that Nintendo has developed and/or published (The latter is what they do more of,
nobody realizes this) roughly 20-25 new franchises in the past 6 years, and even ''more'' if you include spinoffs like ''VideoGame/SuperPrincessPeach'', ''PokemonMysteryDungeon'', and revived-franchises like ''GloryOfHeracles'' that nobody buys (or even acknowledges their existence), and you'll be lucky to get any response beyond "that's not what I wanted!" or "That's not a ''real'' game!".
#66247
There does seem to be a lack of new franchises being released in America, though. Disaster: Day of Crisis, Zangeki no Reginleiv, and semi-new IP Captain Rainbow weren't brought over, and it's not looking too bright for Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower either. So the only new IPs other than the Wii Sports, etc. Nintendo's given us for the Wii are Flingsmash and arguably Endless Ocean. Maybe Sin and Punishment 2 counts, being a new-to-American franchise.
#66248
This whole "I want new franchises" shtick is pretty much common amongst gaming ''in general''. You have some lucky ones like ''AssassinsCreed'', ''TheWorldEndsWithYou'', and ''{{Bioshock}}'' that get hyped to hell and ''noticed'' by gamers, but at the same time, you have people whining about how all we see are spinoffs, sequels, prequels, and remakes, only to ignore almost every new franchise that is announced at shows like E3 and bitch that the ones they've been waiting for aren't out yet.
#66249
SquareEnix. You have their fandom complaining about how they make ''too many'' ''FinalFantasy'' games, then when they announce all sorts of different franchises or even standalone titles, they're ''lucky'' to get noticed throughout the "Why isn't ''FinalFantasy xx'' out yet?!"-type whining. And heaven forbid they ''remake'' a game that was ''demanded'', because ''then'' they get complained about stuff like how they changed too much or changed too little, amongst the
"Wow, this game is OLD!"-type whining.
#66250
SquareEnix has had issues following the merger. Squaresoft during the SuperNES and SonyPlaystation eras was one of the most prolific major publishers in the business, releasing many non Final Fantasy games, including games from other genres, most notably ''{{Einhander}}'' and ''Tobal No. 2''. Nowadays, by CEO Yoichi Wada's own admission no less, the company has fallen into such mismanagement that they've lost extensive development resources and time to two if not three spinoffs of the Final Fantasy installment that only just came out last year following a long and troubled development cycle.
#66251
For X and Y, put in any popular game series for each, and guaranteed someone out there has said something along the lines of "Another X sequel? Haven't they run that down to the ground? Does anyone even play those games anymore? [Company of X] is leading the games industry into a cold, profit-driven era of creative stagnation [...] Anyway, the next Y is ''finally'' coming out next month, can't wait!"
#66253
Also, some fans will rage against one continuity for having newtype ripoffs, or char clones, overly simplistic messages and what have you, and yet will turn a blind eye to it when such themes are re-used ad-verbatim in the original Universal Century timeline.
#66254
''StarTrek'' fans will do this amongst themselves. They will pile on a particular series, missing the fact that that series was not alone in whatever shortcoming they're lambasting. For instance, many folks will blast the inconsistent acting on ''Enterprise'', when ''every'' series had its moments of sub-par acting.
#66255
Fans of ''Series/{{Heroes}}'' and ''{{Lost}}'' will completely miss the fact that they both do a lot of the same things; cliffhangers, LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters, multiple storylines, story arcs, etc.
#66256
Several blogger fans of ''{{Sex And The City}}'' are/were irritated with the misogyny shown on ''{{Entourage}}'', yet defend or deny the misandry found in SATC. Naturally, the inverse also applies.
#66257
''{{Supernatural}}'' fans frequently complain about the show's apparent misogyny, while they bash pretty much any female regular or recurring that comes on the show. See UnpleasableFanbase for more.
#66258
Any MMOG vs. MMOG argument. Heck, not just an MMOG argument, but ''genres of gaming''. It's ''not'' okay for a genre you ''dislike'' to have similar elements to each other or have common traits. But if the genre that ''you'' like has a game in it that is different, then TheyChangedItNowItSucks.
#66259
And related to the above, whenever an article about how NewMediaAreEvil shows up. If the New media that's being demonized is an MMOG, the comments will often be (stupidly) ''agreeing'' with it or saying "This is proof that MMOG here is evil". Whereas if an article had said the same thing about any other genre would have gamers are up in arms about it and saying "See? Typical scapegoating BS".
#66260
The use of StockFootage or, in any animated media, complaining about "Cutting corners" or reusing animation cells (Equivalent of StockFootage), especially launched towards Anime and Disney movies, while ignoring that just about ''every'' form of Animation does this to ''some'' extent, because it saves time ''and'' money, the same goes for StockFootage in other media. (Super Sentai/Power Rangers wouldn't have made it for so long on such a short budget without it). ''SouthPark'' gets a free pass, partly for being a budget show...this doesn't make it seem any more ridiculous to see SouthPark fans complain at other budget shows/movies for reusing animation cells.
#66261
Smarks. Never mind that some wrestlers get praised for things that other wrestlers would get flak for, when the "Piggie James" angle came to be, Smarks were outraged at the {{WWE}} for making fun of Mickie James' weight (Never mind that it was done by two ''heels''). The same Smarks who constantly made fun of Michelle [=McCool=]'s thin appearance, even nicknaming her "Michelle [=McRibs=]." Apparently its okay to make fun of certain wrestlers/figures, especially if they're hated within the Smarkdom, but mocking a Smark darling is unforgivable!
#66262
Fandoms tend to look down on people selling {{Fanfic}}s, but apparently selling {{Fanart}} is a-okay. It's also much less likely to be taken to court by the creator(s).
#66263
Some geeks tend to complain about Hollywood's tide of remakes, sequels, and adaptations. They will then turn around and talk about how they're eagerly anticipating some movie adapted from a comic book, or wonder why their favorite video game hasn't had a rerelease/update, without the slightest trace of irony.
#66264
''SuperSmashBros Melee''{{'}}s FanDumb will regularly attack Brawl for stuff that ''could easily be said about Melee''. One silly instance was hearing "Why'd they remove Mewtwo? He was the best character!" or "They just put in Popular Nintendo Characters - that's not an all stars". Really? Most of ''Melee'''s lineup was '''''popular nintendo characters''''' (Even in Japan - you know...''MARTH''.) I also love hearing how "Brawl was just a commercial for Nintendo." really? Melee was the same, too. They say this like ''Melee'' didn't add any interest to franchises...lessee...''IceClimbers'' probably would have sank into obscurity if they weren't in ''Melee''...''FireEmblem'' owes a ''good portion'' of its western fanbase to ''Melee'' because people were like "Whoa who's this?", ''EarthBound'' had a resurgence in popularity after ''Bros'', and even some of the trophies brought attention to some games that weren't released outside of Japan/America only/Europe...Roy was ''admittedly'' put in to promote ''FireEmblem 6''...''Melee'' wasn't a commercial, now?
#66265
Perhaps the most common hypocritical complaint that competitive ''Melee'' fans have towards ''Brawl'' is that ''Brawl'' is an unbalanced game... ignoring the fact that ''Melee'' was by no means a more balanced game, traditionally having proportionally small top/high tiers and proportionally large low/bottom tiers. One
Melee tier list that was the official tier list for more than two years had 14 characters, more than half the cast, considered low or bottom tier, while only five were considered top or high tier, in a cast of 26 characters. If you compare the current official tier lists for both games, ''Brawl'' has both a proportionally larger top/high tier and a proportionally smaller low/bottom tier than ''Melee''. A clear example of hypocritical fandom bashing another game for a perceived fault that is more applicable to their own game.
#66266
Oh here's a funny one...i heard someone claim that all crossovers were "Fanfiction" because only fans would think about that. Said someone was ''a Marvel and DC fan''...and was talking about stuff like the crisis. The irony is killing me.
#66267
People love to attack Terry Goodkind's {{Sword of Truth}} series because of the sexual content. Those same people often have nothing but good things to say about George R.R. Martin's {{A Song of Ice and Fire}}, which contains much more explicit sexual content.
