This Troper lives in one of the many suburbs to a very awesome {{World Class City}} - {{Los Angeles}}. But, since my home suburb is a very sterotypical American suburb - As in, teens hang out at the mall, homecoming is a big deal, and there's basically nothing to do in town after living here for all sixteen years of my life - I just say that i'm from Los Angeles for two reasons. One, if you live in L.A. County, you basically live in L.A. And, two, my hometown is basically a boring neighborhood/section/district/suburb of a very exciting city.

Staying with in the State bounds, and going by the natives of New York City, you only have: NYC, everything north ("upstate"), and everything east (Long Island). This is too the annoyance of many natives in those north-of-NYC regions, who could care less about the city; rather, they don't like being referred to as "upstate" since, to them, they are in the middle of the state and therefore New York City is down state. I've seen many a debate between two people (one a native, one a New Yorker; both attending a central New York college) in which one would include lines like: "I'm not upstate, you're downstate", "I don't know how it is here, upstate", etc.

Flip it around, a lot of people native (although not all) to the central regions of New York will believe that it's just New York City and the ocean. Long Island is either wrapped up into New York City, or none-existent. A friend of mine whose home was closer to Canada than to New York City automatically assumed I lived in Manhattan because I came from the "New York City" area. Another one was surprised to find out there were farms on Long Island.

No, no, no. In NY you're not "upstate" until you're north of Albany, where I-87 leaves the toll Thruway and becomes the free Northway and the Dutch place names give way to French ones.

This [=LIer=] is with the OP. When out of state and asked "Where in NY are you from?" he answers, "Oakdale," or "Lake Grove," or "Manorville," then waits for the blank stare before saying, "Long Island."

My relatives in Thailand called and asked if we were all right on 9/11. Except I live in FLORIDA.

This troper who lives in Milwaukee can't help but get annoyed at the fact that tourists STILL ask where they can find Arnold's, or Shotz Brewery, or anything related to Garry Marshall's lame 1970s sitcoms for that matter. In fact, he's quick to point out that Mr. Marshall clearly DidNotDoTheResearch as he hadn't even stepped foot in Wisconsin until 2008.

This troper lived in the middle of Flyover Country and was asked by an Australian friend if he was alright after 9/11.

This troper used to live in Shanghai, China (eastern coast of the country). Two overseas friends both messaged to ask if she was okay after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit Sichuan province (central China). Troper hadn't felt a thing, and hadn't known there was even an earthquake until her mother told her. But she appreciated the concern from her friends, and told them so.

This troper is from western Illinois (think Mississippi River). When I went to Mexico a couple years ago, all the locals asked where I was from. At first, I told them I was from Illinois, but their immediate response was always, "Oh, you're from Chicago!" It took a few instances of futile explanations that Chicago is on the exact opposite side of the state from where I live before I finally gave in and just told people I was from Chicago.
