One recent DnD game this troper DM'ed was in an alternate dimension where everyone is basically high, smiling all the time, and loves just about everything due to a mind control spell placed on all water in the dimension. The only caveat being one must keep drinking the water (never particularly hard when everyone needs it to live) as the spell wears off, however, the spell MUST be dispelled or else any drinks made from said water have the same spell. The elf fell into the spell before the party realized what was up, and thus was subject to a perpetual sardonic grin, thinking everything is fine and they should just go back to their jobs (hell they're DOING their jobs) and acted high. The Eladrin almost was subjected to this, but was saved thanks to her spell resistance. At the climax the party had to fight wave after wave of villagers, and eventually the elf before the evil wizard, who gave a MotiveRant about how everyone was happier the way things were.

South Florida: Many people come here for the beaches, perfect weather, bargain shopping, and modern-type atmosphere, but many don't realize that the place is oozing in a downward spiral of political corruption, the people who live there are nothing short of awful, car accidents and the crime rate are off the charts, and the schoolboard also faces corruption issues in Broward and Miami-Dade counties, the former having superintendents to resign due to moneyhoarding and the latter with grand theft (not a good idea to raise your kids her). Mayor Carlos Alvarez is being recalled and many here compare him to ''freakin'' {{Al Capone}}.

This troper would like to add his home area of Gippsland in regional Australia to the list. Sure, most things are fairly rosy with Australia putting up with the economic crunch worldwide better than most (IMO thanks to China, but that's another debate). However most of the people here are (or at least come across) as vapid lunkheads like a cross between a dyed-in-the-wool redneck and a clueless valley girl with the worst flaws of both and the good points (like the redneck's ingenuity with BambooTechnology or the valley girl's something of taste in clothes) of neither, and obviously at least some don't know what a dictionary is since conversations with some can be a case of the ClusterFBomb. That, and this troper generally assumes in any given mid 30s woman/late teens young woman/baby in a pram (that's stroller to you Americans) that the older woman is the grandmother and the young woman is the mother; teenage mothers and such are rife around here. Nothing against them personally but this troper doesn't want a pre-baked family - perhaps it'll be the impetus for him to make peace within himself with that certain ethnic group he tends to gripe about, the Indonesians (well, one of the non-Muslim minority ones anyhow)...

NewDawnHollowDusk's Earth. It looks all peachy keen, nobody could be the wiser, everyone's going on their normal, daily lives and enjoying themselves. But that's the surface. Underneath it all is a surging storm of magic users who either want to protect the world, and make sure that ever weakening Masquerade spell is kept up (but they have to shoot a lot of doggies to do so), destructive Meisters out for their own ends, who always seem to be in control of the situation, and countering them is the Aes Civig Cult, a group of ''nasty'' Technomages who are out to recreate the magic user world to their own ends by some means which require a lot of human casualties, the dropping of the Masquerade and an all out war. Opposing ''them'' are a coalition of Humanoid Abominations who are out to take over the world, have succeeded on their own world by killing many of their own, having brainwashed young people with high magical promise, and planning to use them to construct a castle in North America by sacrificing every living thing there all for the sake of their queen's love for her husband, and in turn they are being used by a horrifying EldritchAbomination with an agenda. Said agenda? Destroy everything, because he likes the universe sterile.

California: Like South Florida above, it features a great climate. The state's government is perpetually dysfunctional. The schools rank near the bottom in performance out of all the states.
