This troper was having a breakdown once at school, complete with tears, yelling, and violence, until one brave soul this troper rarely talked to gave her a hug. This troper broke down completely and cried for the rest of the class, now huggee and hugger are [=BFFs=].

This troper was once over at a friend's house when a huge fight broke out between him and his brother. Much hitting, biting, and snarling ensued. A significant portion of the rest of the afternoon consisted of her repeatedly hugging him and otherwise trying to help him calm down.

When this troper's brain overloads, usually from rage, a hug is the only way to reset it.

This has been used a ''lot'' among this troper's circle of friends -- indeed, the first thing he searches for when he's having some kind of breakdown is a hug from his best friend. Sobbing into her shoulder really helps to depressurize...

An unusually kind teacher that this troper liked and respected once attempted this after he had beaten three people to their knees for jumping him. this troper was so far gone that he nearly decked the teacher as well. His fist was an inch from her face before he realized who he was about to punch. He still regrets it, though he's thrown people down flights of stairs without a second's worth of remorse.

Da_Nuke is usually quite loud when doing school work at the labs. There was class at that time. When he was about to lose it and start yelling, the teacher patted his shoulder. Instant cooldown ensued!

When this troper is upset, this is the best way to make him feel better. Unfortunately, he's surrounded by people who are the opposite. Now he needs a hug...

The one sure way to stop this troper's rage is by hugging her. This will usually result into her melting down into a storm of tears, but she's less likely to punch people that way. Unfortunately, her best friend is not the huggy type. After four years of knowing him, said troper has pounded it into his brain so hard he remembers one out of four times. However, he then goes and tries to fix it, completely ignoring the fact that all she needs is a good cry. Fortunately, her TroubledButCute on-again off-again LoveInterest understands this phenomenon much better, and she also has several close girlfriends, all of whom are more than willing to offer hugs when needed.

Yeah, we men are idiots like that. I'm much the same, only... being a guy, people assume I ''don't'' want a hug, when in reality, yeah I really freaking do... :T

You're describing me! This troper has a best friend who really has no sense of personal space and loves to give back breaking hugs! She probably only does it to annoy me, but she says, "I can't help it, you're so little!"

Sounds like my friend. She doesn't seem to get that I dislike being hugged, especially from behind.

This is generally the rule for me, and my friends know it very well, but I really played the trope straight recently when my professors essentially told me I couldn't continue my study of theater because I "haven't been engaged enough within the theater department." I was exploding, in full Hulk rage mode, screaming about how I've done so much theater work over the past several years and just because it wasn't within the theater department shouldn't mean that all that work is worth jack ''shit'' and--my best friend literally ducks under my flailing arms and hugs me really hard. I dissolved into a mess of tears on her shoulder, but the rage was gone. CrowningMomentOfAwesome ''and'' Heartwarming for her.

Costantly invoked by this troper. Being hyper, he usually blackmails close girlfriends not to stop his psycho attitude until they hug me. This is mostly because I am very unlucky with girls, and most people I know even hates to touch me. They make me sad :'(

This Troper often believes this could work as an anti-Berserk Button for him, but, sadly, by the time anyone has realized this, he's already seeing red, and the only thing that can stop him then is a good kick below the belt. OUCH.

This troper understands that most people need cooldown hugs once in a while. But she once had a certain male friend that needed about 4 EVERY DAY, or else he would cry and stay angry afterwards. Needless to say, she is no longer friends with this boy.

This troper suffers from depression, and has brief periods where she's extremely touch-hungry. Unfortunately, due to certain triggers she has, she has to ''give'' hugs, not receive them. Having people fail to understand this, and plaster her with unwanted touching, serves as a kind of a BerserkButton. However, touching me when I'm crying is not a good idea unless this is an entirely solicited hug.

This troper usually ends up on Cooldown Hug duty when his roommate is upset and drunk. This has, unfortunately, become a weekly occurrence as of late.

When you have a case of the flu that comes with chills, sometimes body heat will be the only thing that will make you feel warm.

I once let down all my friends on something we had all been planning for ages and royally fucked it up. One of them confronted me, pointed out all my mistakes and what I should've done, and I broke down and blubbered, and she gave me a hug to calm me down, saying that she and everyone else forgave me and that everything would work out. That made me sob harder saying what a cheesy chick flick my life was turning into, and both of us laughed at that.

Subverted by this troper. Due to his issues, he used to very bothered by seemingly insignificant things (symmetry, germs, physical contact and the like). When things got bad, people would attempt cooldown hugs, only to freak him out even more.

This troper's father is very good at giving these.

This troper's close friend is very good at giving these. This troper having PTSD, her skills are very much appreciated. At my worst points, she became almost a LivingEmotionalCrutch, simply because of this talent.

This troper definitely needs one when RAEEEEGING out...or a chance to punch the inducer of said rage in the face a couple of times, but the hug is preferred for the lack of blood. On the other hand, her friend WILL punch someone trying to give her one of these when angry, as she's not used to this kind of contact.

Not a good idea to do that to this Troper. If I'm feeling wounded and someone tries to comfort me, my first instinct is to lash out...

This troper discovered the therapeutic power of hugs when he was hugged by somebody who didn't even know he was depressed. I don't cry as much as I used to, but every time, I would just wish somebody would give me a Cooldown Hug. Nobody ever did.

Works like a charm with this troper. Once, I got upset at a friend while he was over. Once he realized what he'd done, he came back from his corner of irritation and hugged me. Didn't say a word, but it calmed me down. A year later, same guy upset me along with a ton of stress. Nobody hugged me, not even him (being at school and sick of the dating rumors, he wanted his space) until after school where my best friend/ride home came to me and hugged me.

Works for this troper, but only if she knows the person. Always has worked, since she was a little girl.
