Of all things, this happened with me and a friend about {{Firefly}}. He though it sounded lame so I showed him the first episode on Netflix Instant Stream. We proceeded to stay up all night watching every episode and then {{Serenity}}.

This Troper wanted to introduce anime through {{Inuyasha}} to a friend. I wanted to show him how much anime kick ass, and had few on the computer, so I showed him an episode on TV. Ironically, it was one of the most action-packed episodes, yet, while I saw it through his eyes, I just realized it was a lot worse and boring than I imagined. While I still have respect for it since it was one of the
first anime that introduced my to the genre that I liked, it was a moment where I realized why it was so highly criticized in so many areas.

I was laughed at for two book series I read. First of all, I brought home a Twilight book(which I don't read anymore, but still) and read it. My older sister laughed at me for it. That was until she saw the trailer(and Pattison) and ate her words. She is now literally Twi-Tarded. My best friend is currently laughing at me for reading
my cat book.

This troper is actually famous for these moments among her friends and family members. Every time she introduces a new anime, fanfiction, or game to anyone (and most of them are geeks too), she will inevitably give it the disclaimer "Yeah, I suck at describing things, but I swear it's awesome."
#13442
This happens to this troper, as well.

This troper got completely obsesssed with Erfworld recently. I tried to get my friends to read it too, but somehow "A nerd enters a world running on wargame rules, where everything is either ridiculously cute, a pun or a meme." just doesn't sound that great.

This troper remembers being more than a little worried when I heard Joss Stone was going to be playing Anne of Cleves on The Tudors. I mean, I liked her voice, but the only time I'd seen her act was in Eragon, and that film was so bad I try not to remember it. Then her first episode rolled around. She was brilliant. I was stunned. And thrilled.

This troper was once forced to explain babies, and thus pregancy, to another player's character who had been raised on an infernal plane and thus knew ''nothing'' about mortal races, including concepts of life and death. After a description basically like that seen on the Main Better Than It Sounds page, said player proceeded to delcare war on babies. Hilarity ensured.

This troper explaining "Skins" to a friend: "So, basically, these teenagers are in England, and the show is about them going through all the same drama and shitty stuff that we did in high school while having all the sex and all the fun we didn't have until college." Friend: "So basically it's like GossipGirl, only with more pretentious hipstery fans?" Yeah, we're addicts now.

Sex. Think about it. At one point, it probably sounded kinda freaky and instilled a little HetIsEw for those of us who got the heteronormative talk.
#13448
This male troper has to result to this whenever recomending The Princess Bride as a good movie to watch to other guys, who naturally reject it as soon as they hear the title. This troper was once guilty of doing the same thing.
#13449
This troper's friend immediately rejected the movie at the mention of the name. 1 hour later...
#13450
Okay. Who DIDN'T think KingdomHearts sounded like bad fanfiction before trying it out?
#13451
Without fail, when this troper tries explaining ''StargateSG1'' to people, they go blank as soon as you say "The guy from ''{{MacGyver}}'' is the leader. And they fight snakes that take over your body, and they use a big donut to explore the galaxy....." Now, I just show them an episosde.

Upon discovering that her friend had never had quiche, this troper said "It's pretty much an egg-and-cheese pie with some ham in it. ...it's better than it sounds, really", followed by a quick "trust me on this one."

This troper adored
Higurashi, yet felt conflicted over whether or not to check out
Umineko after hearing it had nothing to do with the predecessor series apart from a character's possible connection between the two and
people dying in one arc and then being alive again in the next arc. I worried it might possibly have been an attempt to cash in more money off a popular franchise, yet in the end, curiosity got the better of me and I checked it out (manga, anime, Visual Novel--in that order). Result? I just might possibly like it even more than Higurashi.

This troper was talking to someone who had never heard of Series/DoctorWho before, and this troper described it as being a show about "an alien who travels through time". Cue the other person's "WTF?" face followed by this trope being cited.
#13455
Been in your situation, troper!
#13456
Upon trying to explain {{Minecraft}} to multiple people in my school, they all dismissed it as "boring" or "bad". However, this trope appears to have been averted by my friend, who explained it in a way that caused at least two people to become interested in it.
#13457
I would like to know how he did that.
#13458
This other troper's method is to start by explaining fire and TNT.
#13459
When this troper was trying to get his friends to play, all he did was explain it once, then yell "MIIIINNNNEEECCCRRRAAFFFFFFT!" at everyone until they tried it. He succeeded.

This troper was trying to explain the plot of ''PantyAndStockingWithGarterbelt'' to her friend. She came up with, "So there's this girl, named Stocking, and this other girl, named Panty [immediately gets a weird look], and they're angels who got kicked out of Heaven, and Panty can turn her panties into a gun [even weirder look, and troper bursts out laughing as she continues to explain] and they fight these ghosts, like one with a million tits and sperm ghosts and there's a priest with an afro that may or may not be a pedophile...okay, it's actually really funny, alright?"

This troper's first draft of a novel garnered the following reaction from his first "reviewer", a close friend of his- "It's like District 9 meets VForVendetta...with
vampires." I now repeat this whenever people ask me what the story's about, but always tag this trope on the end afterwards.
